The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Aquitaine is the region which contains the departments of South West France including the Gironde, Dordogne and Lot et Garonne. The regions capital is Bordeaux and is one of the world’s great wine-growing regions. The area is typically characterised by châteaux, vines and rolling countryside rich in agriculture and Bastide Towns steeped in history.
Like most of France, Aquitaine has a temperate, Atlantic-influenced climate. Rainfall is below the nationwide average with summer temperatures averaging over 25°C. The winters are generally mild with an average temperature of 10°C and the occasional frost. There are of course continental extremes where one can experience severe frosts in the winter and in contrast blasts of Saharan heat of 35°+ in the summer.
The day-to-day life of the locals is still based around agriculture and the pace of life is slow. Food and mealtimes are a sacred time of the day and long lunches are still the norm. Children are still free to play outside without the constant gaze of parents and the crime rate is refreshingly low.
The Saint Jean de Duras area
Referred to as "The Tuscany of France" you will be stunned by the beauty of the rolling hills of the Aquitaine region with many castles around (there are about 1000 castles to be discovered in the Dordogne), the bastide towns with its lovely farmers' markets and the Dordogne river floating gently through it all.
Saint Jean de Duras is a small village in the Aquitaine region on the border of the Lot et Garonne and the Dordogne, also known as the Perigord Purpre or the Purple Perigord, named after the color of its wine, for this area has the largest wine region in the South West of France.
In combination with some relaxation in Simply Canvas you will find that the area is very much able to fulfil your needs for some culture or a nice stroll on a farmer's market. Taste some wine at one of the many wine chateaux in the neighborhood (there are also a few organic ones). The lovely town of Bergerac is only 20km away with its beautiful old centre, its cobbled streets and not to forget Cyrano himself. Would you like to enjoy a day of culture then the city of Bordeaux will ensure a lovely day out with its finest restaurants and art galleries. In many places you will find access to the Dordogne river or to the Garonne with possibilities for a lovely walk, a picnic on its banks a boat tour or even a whole day of canoeing. If after all this, there is still space for more, choose an evening out to taste the regional goodies on a night market, play golf on the nearby golf course, visit one of the many brocante markets and find yourself a little something and of course you have to try one of the many "fêtes", that the local villages are famous for and of which there are plenty to choose.

Thanks so much for your warm hospitality and care, the great food and great beds, we felt at home at Simply Canvas, such a pity we have to go home again!
We would like to thank you for the wonderful time we had with you, the friendship we felt, the warm talks and hospitality were overwhelming. The accommodation, food and enthusiasm is great. It is a pity, but it is time to go.
Thanks for a wonderful and peaceful week! We arrived all stressed out from work, but within 2 days we were all relaxed. The children enjoyed the swimming pool and the friends they made so quickly.
It is even nicer than your beautiful website.
