Gite | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Where once stood enormous wine vats in our barn, now stand our beautiful, modern gites. Completed in 2011 and 2012, the gites have had many visitors already, all of whom are seduced by their charm and their wonderfully peaceful surroundings. Contemporary, fully equipped holiday homes, whilst retaining some features of their previous life as barns!
The Orchard offers you a stay in quiet, rural wine-making countryside yet beaches, villages and bustling towns can all be found within a 30 minute drive. Beautiful Bordeaux can be reached in 70 minutes and La Rochelle is the same distance. Lots of birds, hoopoes, harriers and cuckoos are among the locals! Veru quiet roads ideal for walking or biking. The Poitou Charente area was recently voted Lonely Planet's Top Ten Regions for 2012.
Le Cerisier gite has 2 bedrooms. Large french doors lead you directly from the garden into the open plan living room and kitchen with a circular table. About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
The Charente-Maritime in which The Orchard is situated is the second sunniest place in France with over 2250 hours of sunshine per year. The beautiful and verdant Charente-Maritime has the benefit of the warm friendly currents of the gulf stream which ensure winters are often mild and summers long and warm.
Surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers, The Orchard is nestled in rural Charente Maritime yet within a short 25 min drive of the beautiful beaches of Meschers, St George de Didonne, Royan and the pretty port of Mortagne. Why not visit Cognac and its famous distilleries, the Roman amphitheatre in historic Saintes situated on the River Charente or perhaps a shopping trip along the cobbled streets of Bordeaux, a World Heritage site. Perhaps even a glitzy evening spent at the Casino in Jonzac?
Fish and food markets a plenty, cafes to visit and boat trips to take along the river. There are village shops close by and Gemozac hosts an outdoor pool with slides to cool down in on hot afternoons during July and August.
Saint Germain du Seudre
La Palmyre Zoo is a fantastic day out.
Luna Parc, a fun fair only open during July and August.
Futuroscope, a 'different kind of leisure park experience.'
A Cognac distillery at Le Chateau de Mesnac.
Le Chateau des Enigmes, a castle to explore.
A spa and spring heated swimming pool at Jonzac.
Les Jardins du Monde, botanical gardens not to be missed.
Hire a boat taxi to give you a guided tour along the coast.

"A beautiful, tranquil, setting for some much needed R&R"
Part of the joy of "the Orchard", for me, is its lovely rural setting amid peaceful countryside. But, for those wanting more excitement, .there are beaches within a short journey, nice restaurants and also some quite significant towns, together with historical sites (Roman and, indeed, pre-historic).
The owners really could not be more friendly and welcoming and I shall be visiting again (and would certainly not hesitate to recommend this idyllic place to friends/family).
