The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The Pyrenees Orientales is the southernmost of Languedoc-Roussillon’s 5 Departments. There are many opportunities for walking or cycling. Along the coast there are several resorts with lively promenades and long sandy beaches, although you may prefer to visit the delightful fishing village of Collioure, one of the pearls of the Mediterranean, made famous by artists such as Matisse, Dali and Picasso. South of Collioure you come to Banyuls sur Mer, famous for the sweet aperitif that bears its name. From there you can take the coast road into Spain for lunch and other bargains.
Inland, the regional capital, Perpignan, (20 minutes drive) is well worth a visit with excellent shopping and much of interest including the summer castle of the Kings of Mallorca. En route to Perpignan are Palau del Vidre, famous for its decorative glassware, and the delightful old quarter of Elne. A little beyond Elne is the charming mountain village of Castelnou. See our web site for further details.
The Saint Genis des Fontaines area
St Genis is a delightful, quiet village 30 km to the south of Perpignan and only 8 km inland from the Mediterranean beaches at Argeles-sur-mer - listed in the top 6 beaches in France. The village offers a playground for children, a boulodrome, a trim trail, two tennis courts, cycling and rambling paths, horse riding. There is a market on Tuesdays and Fridays selling local produce. The village is famous for its 10th century Romanesque Abbey, the Saint-Michel. There is a full range of shops; bank, tabac, post office, chemist, doctor, dentist, supermarket, cafes, boulangeries, restaurants and bars. The close proximity of the villa to the Auberge des Alberes means that you can enjoy plenty of the excellent local wine with your meal.

BUDGET FLIGHTS
There are 5 airports which are, in our opinion, within reasonable driving distance of St Genis. In all cases fast autoroute travel is available for most of the journey. The airports ( with approximate distances ) are:
Perpignan 17 miles
Girona 52 miles
Beziers 82 miles
Carcassonne 93 miles
Toulouse 152 miles
The low price airlines, Easyjet, Ryanair and Fly-be, between them offer flights from most areas of the UK. The general rule is that the earlier you book the cheaper the flights, but watch our for the regular special deals. To get the best prices it is also worth considering driving to another UK airport. For example, being in Bristol, our preferred options are Bristol - Beziers or Bristol - Toulouse. However we also drive to Stansted for the wider range of flights including Stansted - Perpignan. Airline links are available on our web site.
Generally, for visits of a single week, flying is the cheaper option, even taking the cost of a hire car into account. For 2 weeks the driving option becomes more cost effective with many cheap hotels available for overnight stops. When comparing costs don't forget the autoroute tolls if you wish to make quick progress.
SELF DRIVE
We have been visiting France for many years and enjoy the driving but you need to be aware that it is a long journey (over 700 miles in France). However the tolls mean that the autoroutes are usually quiet and fast. Furthermore there are plenty of budget price hotels which offer excellent value for money and are ideally situated near motorway junctions. There are several alternative routes and we would be very happy to provide advice. Our preferred route which takes you over the spectacular new Millau bridge. We are happy to provide advice.

We had a fantastic holiday in this well equipped house. The home was great for our needs and comfortably accomodated 4 adults and 3 children. We know the village very well, and we able to walk to friends locally, walk to the Boulangerie, and drive to the Carrefour in 3 minutes. The house was a great base for touring around the amazing countryside, close to the beach and village shops. The air conditioning, pool, wi-fi and SKY were a big bonus for us, and especially the children! Owners were very helpful both prior and during our stay, thankyou .Local reps. were friendly & helpful too. We would recommend this property and would love to return again! Response: Many thanks for your kind comments. We are pleased that you had a good time and that our villa met your expectations. |

We had a lovely two week stay in this villa. We travelled to France by train and managed to cope without a car. The area is very much set up for car drivers so this was a bit tricky, however, there are some lovely shops in the village and we managed comfortably by not venturing to the local Carrefour ( there are also buses and taxis near by). We also discovered a couple of other villages that were walkable though some lovely countryside. The villa and pool were excellent and we spent every afternoon swimming. The pool cover meant it is was very safe for the children ( aged 6 and 3) and it also gave useful coverage when the sun was really hot. The lay out of the rooms is also incredibly good and easily allows two families or two groups of travellers to have a little privacy. The kitchen had everything we needed for some lovely French cooking! (the local tomatos and Nectarines are amazing). We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend it to others. Response: Many thanks for your kind words. It is good to know that it is possible to have such an enjoyable time without the use of a car. We hope to be able to welcome you again should you return to the region. |

Guestbook for Villa Bonne Vie
"What a little gem. The villa is well situated on the edge of St Genis and within a very short drive to the supermarket. As soon as you walk in it feels like home and contains everything you could possibly need for a great family stay. For us it was the little touches such as ample socket adaptors, an excellent supply of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils and so on) Not to mention brilliant home entertainments systems (should you happen to have a wet day) wi-fi and free telephone calls." BB Leicestershire - August 2010
"The holiday was fantastic, villa fantastic, you both have thought of everything a family requires on their holiday and the taste of décor and layout of outside facilities and pool was superb.
