The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region

This part of France really is magnificent. Fabulous countryside, field upon field of sunflowers, orchards and vines, long slow meandering rivers, ancient bastide towns, long warm summers and short cool winters make this region the envy of all France. The Dordogne offers many opportunities for both young and old including cycling, canoeing, walking, golfing, swimming or just relaxing with a bottle of wine and enjoying the scenery.
The Saint Emilion / Castillon La Bataille area
We are well situated to explore the entire lower Dordogne valley with its many attractions, bastide towns, glorious countryside and famous wine routes. 2km away the village offers basic amenities such as a patisserie, bank and post office while a larger choice of shops can be found at St Foy La Grande, Libourne, Bergerac and Bordeaux.
We are situated on the local wine route and very close to a famous chateau where you can explore the gardens, taste the wine and marvel at the outstanding views and architecture
The town of Castillon La Bataille (7km) was the site of the last conflict of the Hundred Year War in 1453 when the French managed to finally drive out the English. There are a few small shops, restaurants, a bustling market every Monday and a picturesque waterfront. There is also a large supermarket nearby where you can buy literally anything, even maggots for your fishing hook!
Libourne (18km) is an ancient bastide town and its square “place Abel Surchamps” is a stunning example of how this town was set out to 13th century principles. Besides the remains of old bastide walls and an original gate tower it offers a large selection of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and bars. A lively market is also held every Thursday.
St Foy La Grande (10km) is host to a superb market every Saturday which is renowned throughout the area. Here the choice of fresh fruit, vegetables and cooked food on sale will certainly get your taste buds tingling! There is also a small vegetable market every morning. The town is distinctly medieval with narrow streets, a 13th century gothic church and a museum.
St Emilion (15km) is a famous magnificent medieval town just 15 minutes drive away. This really is a very interesting and beautiful place to visit with history dating back to prehistoric times. It is a place of prestigious pilgrimage and a World Heritage site with fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets. Probably best known for its high quality wines St- Emilion boasts a staggering 68 Grand Cru and Grand Cru Chateau. As you could imagine there is wine tasting galore, fantastic restaurants and many a nook and cranny to lose yourself in.
Bergerac (36km) is the capital of the local wine-growing region and is set on the banks of the Dordogne River. A picturesque town with plenty of shopping and lots of restaurants nearly all serving traditional Perigordian food for which the region is renowned.
Bordeaux (48km) is well worth a visit and takes 50 minutes by car through some great scenery. World famous for its great wines, Bordeaux is a must see city and you will find a visit here or to a nearby grand chateau like Mouton Rothschild both fascinating and awe inspiring. There are plenty of great shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and markets dotted around the grand boulevards, slender alleys and stylish squares. During the summer the streets are packed with locals and tourists alike enjoying typical French lunch al fresco without a care in the world... a fabulous place.
Lacanau, the nearest beach is an hour and three quarters drive. Learn how to surf in the Atlantic breakers or just relax in the sun upon the miles and miles of golden sands.
Arcachon (112km), roughly an hour and a half drive is where you will find the highest sand dune in Europe, "Dune de Pila". Arcachon is an upmarket coastal haven with breath-taking views from the dunes out onto the surrounding basin and forest. Great for windsurfing, paragliding, paddling in the calm bay and just soaking up the sun.
Besides the towns and villages there are plenty of activities to participate in whether it be horse riding, canoeing, water skiing, Private lake fishing, golf, tennis, badminton, its all here on our doorstep.

A very enjoyable stay, helped by our friendly and welcoming hosts. A peaceful location, with plenty of space inside, ideal for touring the vineyards and visiting Bordeaux. We would certainly stay again. The one (small) downside was the limited coverage of the WiFi. |

During our stay at Les Eymeries we were made very welcome by our hosts. The accomodation was clean, spacious and very well equipped. The surroundings were peaceful and yet not too far away from local amenities. Great base for exploring. |
