The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
The area is well-known for its wine growing appellations including Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, St Emilion, Sauternes, Medoc, Bergerac and Cotes de Duras. This property is ideally located for the wine connoisseur wishing to visit all of these famous regions.
Chateaux: There are numerous medieval, rennaissance and 18th century chateaux, many now associated with wine production. The Black Prince was very fond of the area and many of the historical centres were founded during his time as fortified towns or Bastides. La Sauve Majeur is a famous ruined abbey close by, where Eleanor of Aquitaine was a frequent visitor, and where there is an excellent wine centre promoting the white wines of the region. The Romagne cave co-operative lies on the edge of the village and sells Bordeaux red and Entre deux Mers white wines as well as sparkling whites, all at reasonable prices.
There are many excellent restaurants in picturesque villages such as St Emilion, by tranquil mill streams such as in Castelmoron D'Albret, or on the banks of the slow moving Dordogne such as at St Pardon where it is possible to view the Mascaret at certain times of year.
The English occupied the area in the 12th century and established many of the characteristic Bastides in the region. From larger centres such as Libourne (20 mins) - founded by the associate of the Black Prince, Roger de Lybourne - to small towns like Creon (10 mins), all have the typical central square with market and fortifications common to bastides. Today these towns are charming market spots with excellent historical streetscapes and little shops.
Aquitaine was the scene of a long conflict in the Middle Ages between the French and English armies. Castillon La Bataille (20 mins) was the setting for the last major battle of the Hundred Years War. The battle is re-staged here each year on weekends in August.
Saint Emilion / Branne area
A visit to historic Saint Emilion is an absolute must for its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings, wine shops and very good places to eat. It is home to world renowned wines and a superb maison du vin and cave co-operative. The town of Branne lies on the Dordogne with its famous bridge designed by Gustav Eiffel and its beautiful twin towered church.
The weather on the whole is superb. In summer there is hardly any rain, spring is pleasant, and September is just a delight. Excursions to St Emilion, Bordeaux and Bergerac are of course the most enjoyable for the adults, but children can have a lot of fun too. The beautiful seaside resort of Arcachon (80 mins) boasts miles of golden sand, the world's largest sand dune - the Dune de Pyla - and water parks. Bordeaux has a couple of zoos. There are several transport museums and a steam railway (summer only) nearby. The grottos and chateaux of the Dordogne Valley are also in easy striking distance and the Roman remains at Montagne are well worth a visit. Perigeux, Sarlat and Lascaux make splendid day trips.
Wine and food festivals abound during the summer months. Look out for the St Emilion wine festival in June and the bread, cheese and wine festival in Langon at the beginning of September - both well worth a visit.
