The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region

If you come in the summer months you'll just love basking by the pool enjoying chilled glasses of Bordeaux blanc, but you will also find lots of things to occupy young and old in the surrounding countryside.
Spring and Autumn are often delightfully warm and a great time to come and explore by car, foot or bike.
Our area of Aquitaine was the scene of a long conflict in the Middle Ages between the French and the occupying English armies. Castillon La Bataille was the setting for the last major battle of this period known as the Hundred Years War. Many of the towns and villages are fortified and date back to this troubled time.
Of course the Bordeaux region is also world famous for its great wines, and you will find a visit to a grand chateau like Mouton Rothschild both fascinating and awe inspiring.
A visit to historic Saint Emilion is an absolute must for its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings, wine shops and very good places to eat, and it is home to more world renowned wines.

Saint Emilion / Castillon La Bataille area

Castillon La Bataille has a bustling street market every Monday where you will be able to fill your basket with gorgeous fresh produce; creamy cheeses from the Pyrenees, locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, just baked oven fresh loaves and glistening fish, oysters and mussels from the Atlantic.
Bikes can be hired in town and a delightful way to explore the Dordogne is to hire canoes for a gentle paddle downstream. The silver beaches of the Atlantic are not far away and another great day out for everyone is Aqualand Aquatic Park with its slides, shutes, pools and wave machines.
Three waterparks nearby have sandy beaches and watersports and lakeside cafes. Many of the chateaux in the area are delighted to welcome visitors for a tour of the vineyards and, of course, a taste of the wine.
Each summer a cast of several thousand people and horses act out the Battle of Castillon which in 1453 saw the French finally drive the English out of France. This is a spectacular show and another "must see".
