The Valais region

Saas-Fee is recognised as one of Switzerland's more family friendly ski resorts with lots of flat sunny slopes for beginners and plenty of supervised activities for children. Saas-Fee's piste skiing is quite extensive and snow conditions are usually first class. In Saas-Fee there are endless off piste routes to explore, many of them starting from peaks which must first be climbed. If you want to notch up ascents of 4000m peaks, followed by ski descents of half that figure, Saas-Fee is the place to do it.

The ski lifts are no more than 7 minutes walk from the chalet or in 4 minutes via the electric bus. Saas-Fee claims a choice of 48 different slopes once those of the adjacent villages of Saas-Grund, Saas-Balen and Saas-Almagell have been factored in. (The villages are united by an "all areas" lift pass, which grants access to a total of 145km of pistes. There are no lift links between them, but the local post bus provides free transport every half hour.)

Saas-Fee lies at a chunky 1,800m, with the slopes rising to a snow-sure 3,500m and glacier skiing thrown in for good measure. Saas-Fee offers 22 lifts, including 3 cable cars, 1 funicular railway, 5 gondolas, 2 chairlifts, the remainder being surface lifts (draglifts). Other activities include snowboarding, paragliding, hang gliding, and tobogganing.

Saas-Fee

Saas-Fee is a traditional mountain village of narrow streets, lined by old chalets and free of cars. Special electric taxis and buses operate to transport people around. Saas-Fee has a wide variety of shops, from sophisticated boutiques to sports stores to corner shops selling regional specialities and fresh produce. Most of them are managed by the owners, who offer expert friendly advice in several language.

There's also a good range of eating in Saas-Fee with around 50 restaurants and cafés ranging from Michelin-starred gourmet dining at one of Switzerland's top restaurants to a variety of cuisine from Europe and around the world. There are plenty of cafés, bars and pizzerias and 11 mountain restaurants, making it easy to find a light bite to eat day or night. With around 20 bars, many of them situated at the foot of the slopes and 3 night clubs there's also plenty of après ski to be enjoyed.

"A little bit of heaven on earth!"

Beautiful location nestled amongst the mountains and fantastic chalet with amazing views. The people of Saas Fee are so friendly. The chalet is in a fantastic spot surrounded by mountains, and is so light and airy and beautifully furnished to a very high standard. Excellent places to eat all within walking distance.

"Beautiful chalet in a glorious location, great value for money"

Chalet Greta is a beautiful chalet, mixing modern with traditional Swiss style. With only a short 2 min walk to Saas Fee centre, it is perfectly located with both views over the mountains and convenience for families.
Biggest benefit for us as a family was the en suite in all rooms, plus the luxury of a bath in the master bedroom as well as a shower.
Additional touches of luxury include a dishwasher and washing machine, essential for making this a home from home.
The sun terrace seats a large family with ease and is a real treat to relax on at any time of day. The large umbrella is a real help providing shade during the mid day sun.
The biggest WOW factor in the chalet has to be the shower built into the mountain in the lower bedroom, really impressive!
Local bakery and supermarkets make this a really "easy" self catering holiday with all the facilities you need on your doorstep.
We visited in the summer and had glorious weather all week, but we've already booked chalet Greta again this winter so we can experience the chalet and Saas Fee in the snow!
Saas Fee has loads of activities for the family from free play areas across the village, to a crazy golf, adventure playground with zip wires, toboggan run and many cable cars to beautiful mountain top restaurants. Hannig is the closest gondola to the chalet, and a must for all parents to visit as you can feed tame marmots from the restaurant at the top. Definitely try the crepes, hot chocolate, curry chicken salad and rosti.
There is a delightful pizza restaurant 1 minute from the chalet and great for a quick bite or take away on the way home after a long day out.
There are many lovely walks to do in Saas Fee and you can do a different walk each day for a month and still have more to discover.
There was a music festival on whilst we were there with loads of free and cheap concerts to go to. The highlight had to be listening to the alpine horns in the village square whilst enjoying a bottle of wine.
