The Lapland region
The terrain of Northern Lapland is a varied mixture of fell highlands, wilderness, swampy forests and winding waterways. There are a number of conservation areas and national parks in the region. The fresh, bright summers and twilight calmed winter nature holds a wide range of wildlife, distinctly different seasons and plenty of light phenomena.
The tree stocks of Northern Lapland are rather scarce and above the tree line only small growing deciduous trees and shrubs grow. The fell tops are bare and easy to traverse. In Scandinavia, everyone has the right to temporarily stay on land and water areas owned by someone else. According to the so-called Everyman's Rights, people travelling in nature are allowed to pick e.g. mushrooms and berries from areas where public right of way is permitted. The right to travel in nature obliges us to behave with respect towards nature and its animals. In Lapland, reindeer in particular must be considered. Please remember to be careful with campfires and do not leave any traces of camping behind you. If you go fishing, please remember to acquire the appropriate permits and adhere to the rules and regulations. Naturally, the use of motor vehicles does not fall within the scope of Everyman's Rights.
You can explore nature in Lapland in countless different ways. Choose from lots of great terrain for making self-reliant, but also guided tours with professional guides. Guided snowmobile safaris, reindeer or dog sled in winter, canoeing and fishing trips, mountain biking and gold panning in summer are safe alternatives to first timer. Experienced visitor acquires a hiking map and navigate woods alone or with friends.
Saariselkä has nature, slalomhills, ski-routes, skating, ice-carting, spa, angry birds-park, hiking routes, goldpanning, fishing, auroras borealis, reindiers, husky-safaries, and a lot of more activities. You can also just enjoy the peace and views from own balcony.
