Had a great week at Jury's Gap. The weather was wild with loads of sea spray and sideways walks. With no firing on the shooting range we were able to make the most of walking up the beach towards Dungeness. The kite surfing was also amazing with 20 or so surfers out there at any one time. The cottage had plenty of space for us and the open fires were welcome. The owners have obviously spent some time putting in new carpets and decorating and everything was clean and just as we expected from other reviews. Would love to go back in the Summer to be able to sit on the beach. |

This house has a fantastic location right next to the long sweeping sandy beach of Broomhill Sands which it is not unusual to have completely to yourselves, even in the middle of the school holidays. We have stayed there several times in the past couple of years and it is perfect for a relaxing coastal holiday with lovely long walks along the beach, whilst only a short drive from the picturesque Cinque Port town of Rye and the lovely Rye Harbour nature reserve. As the house is so close to the beach it is easy to pop back in to make a brew and take afternoon tea on the sands, and later in the day we loved taking our evening drinks down the beach and enjoying the sunset vista before returning to the house to enjoy dinner in the attractive dining room. The house itself is a warm and cosy haven when the wind whips up outside. It is full of character, having a sense of history as a coastguard cottage whilst at the same time clearly reflecting the profession of its current owners with its creatively designed interior and original artwork. The kitchen is very well equipped and even cleaning materials such as dishcloths and fairy liquid are provided. There are new carpets upstairs, the beds are very comfortable and it is lovely to hear the wind whistling outside at night whilst snuggling down under the Egyptian cotton sheets. The garden is well designed yet with an untamed natural look, featuring plenty of wildlife friendly plants which attract a colourful splash of bees and butterflies in the summer months. The table and chairs are situated in a sun trap which is perfect for enjoying a spot of lunch and sunbathing with a book on days when the beach is extra windswept. The MOD training area is situated at the back of the house and to be honest you completely forget it is there (excepting any boys in your party for whom it can represent a special point of interest!). A particular advantage is that due to the lack of civilisation along that part of the beach it is great for nature lovers and you can get some really good views of seabirds and waders whilst enjoying the maritime plants such as yellow horned poppies and sea-holly. In summary, a secluded coastal retreat for a completely relaxing holiday. |
