The South East England / Sussex region

Further afield you are within easy reach of Winchelsea, Battle, Bodiam, Canterbury, the Channel Tunnel and the Kent countryside.
The 'invitation only' golf links at nearby Camber are well known and the adjacent Sands are glorious at any time of the year. Golf courses can also be found at nearby St Leonard's and Seddlescombe. Other activities include sailing, windsurfing, fishing and an abundance of walks. The nature reserve at Rye Harbour boasts several hides.
Cycling is an excellent way of exploring Romney Marsh using the tangle of narrow lanes, where you can discover Norman churches and 15th Century smugglers pubs.
The Rye area
Travelling westward across Romney Marsh, the distinctive outline of Rye can be seen in the distance. It rises above the level green pastures, stretching from the sea to the far hills which formed the shoreline before the marsh was drained.
Once surrounded by sea, this fortified hilltop town played an important role in the defence of the south coast of England. These days, the river no longer harbours warships and is home to the local fishing fleet.
Meandering for over one and a half miles from Rye to the coast, the river forms part of the picturesque scenery visible from several vantage points in and around the citadel of Rye.
St Mary's church tower (usually open to the public) offers the best viewpoint to show the terracotta roofs of the many timbered houses. These ancient buildings, cobbled streets and secret passages, once the haunt of smugglers and highwaymen, regularly attract film crews in search of historical settings for period productions.
Many authors, musicians, artists and celebrities have made Rye their home, a medieval haven periodically visited by Royalty. In 1573 the title "Rye Royale" was bestowed upon the town by Queen Elizabeth I after a three day stay.
The sheer concentration of living history packed into this vibrant market town makes it the ideal base for a holiday of discovery, or a relaxing short break. There are many comfortable, welcoming hotels and guest houses and plenty of charming inns and restaurants.
RYE GENERAL MARKET IS OPEN EVERY THURSDAY FROM 9am-4pm. Our "Boathouse" appartment was very comfortable with all mod cons and overlooking the river (and Ostriches!). It was just short walk into Rye which has very pretty shops, lots of history and good places to eat. We had a great "Rat pack" night at "Simply Italian" and enjoyed the tea shops and local walks. |

The Boathouse was our haven in Rye until very recently when we finally bit the bullet and got our own weekend retreat. For the previous 3 years we stayed in each flat at one point or another and I can not complain about any of them. The facilities, location and personable nature of Chris meant that every trip we made to Rye was a pleasure. We can't fault the Boathouse in terms of value and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Rye, either for a few nights or longer. The river runs in front and given that Rye can be congested with tourists, once back at the Boathouse it feels like another world. I shall miss our little idyll but can highly recommend to anyone looking for self-catering accommodation. |

The approach road was not typical of the ideal place to stay, but once installed in the comfortable apartment nothing mattered but settling down to an easy going and relaxing holiday. We knew that Rye was a great place to wander and forget time and the location of the Boathouse was perfect for coming and going as we wished. We had many long walks and identified favourite places to have refreshment breaks of various sorts. It was impossible to do anything other than relax without any demands or pressure. The apartment was well equiped, comfortable and easy to live in. We had planned to go abroad, but this holiday was much more enjoyable and memorable. |
Guestbook for Boathouse
“This precious stone set in the silver sea,
This beloved plot, this earth, this realm,
This England …..”
Shakespeare, Richard II
We spent two fantastic weeks here.
This flat is cosy, comfortable and an ideal place to explore some beautiful gardens and National Trust properties from.
We’ll recommend it to all our friends
Brigitte and Ebershard, Germany 5/8/00 – 19/8/00
We’ve had a lovely time here. The highlights, apart from the charming town of Rye, were Sissinghurst and Hole Park Gardens. (farmers’ market on Mondays). We’ve been coming to Rye regularly for over 15 years now and this is our second stay at the Boathouse. If there is a more perfect place to stay in Rye, we’ve yet to find it. It’s the place to stay for easy access to the charms of Rye and the countryside beyond

This is our 9th visit to the Boathouse!
Reading, writing, walking, relaxing. Fantastic!
John & Carole Owen Sittingbourne, Kent 6/4/07
We had a fantastic week in the Boathouse.
Flat very comfortable, well equipped.
The location is excellent for visiting Sussex, and ….. the weather was superb.
Breakfast at the balcony 6 of the 7 days
Visits to – Dungeness, Camber Sands, Canterbury, Bodiam Castle
In Rye we had dinner at Carey’s for fish & steaks, very good! Also an Indian meal in High Street.
Lunch at Ypres Inn, excellent, could have our drinks outside, sitting in the garden.
Hope to come back!,
Ann & Jan Hoogmade, Holland, 14-21 March
Another fabulous weekend, in spite of all the rain. We so love this apartment, we are so relaxed here, and it gives us such a welcome break from fostering and a house full of children. Many thanks.
WE WILL BE BACK

Really enjoyed our time at the Boathouse. The apartment was very comfortable and clean, with a lovely touch, a bottle in the fridge. Heating was nice and cosy and the electric fire really finished it off. On our first night we went to the Standard Inn and had a really lovely meal – good value. Went to Rye Heritage Centre. It might seem a lot, £3.50 each to see a model of the town along with a commentary of the history of the buildings, we loved every minute of it. We would recommend the Boathouse to our friends and a visit to Rye.
Phil & Donna, Herne Bay Nov 2010
Had a fantastic week here – found the Boathouse to be very comfortable and handy location for everything in Rye. We will be coming back – Rye is lovely! Had excellent meals everywhere – Baileys – great steak, Carey’s – seafood platter was impressive, Simply Italian – try the special seafood pasta, it’s delicious! The Ship for real ale and excellent standard of food. Great coffee & cream tea at Tambika near the Heritage Centre too. Jempsons café is reasonable and good food too for a quick bite. We don’t want to leave!!
Thank you.
Cath and Shaun, August 2010
Ducks nesting on opposite bank while I enjoyed breakfast on the balcony.
A yacht sailed (apparently) along the field on the left! Comfort, peace and warmth within us! Shall leave here refreshed and ready to face the world once more. Do visit Jempsons of Peasmarsh – the Harrods food store of the South East!,
Gill, 9th – 11th/4/9
One night definitely not enough! We loved Rye and will have to come again for a longer stay. The flat is perfectly situated; extremely comfortable and well looked after.
The nightlife is good, if a little too good!
Saturday night we had a delicious fresh plaice in a pub around from the Mermaid, think it was The Borough Arms. Thank you very much for a lovely stay.,
Katherine & JP, 30-31st May
I’m here for one full month – lucky me!! So far, having a great time, lovely to see Rye & old friends again. The apartment is clean & the water pressure for shower is amazing – it’s normally awful in rentals.
Anne is a wonderful housekeeper leaves everything wonderful.
Hamdens in Rye great for breakfast & lunch. Fish Café good but a bit expensive. Had a good curry from The Spice Place on main st and good pub grub at the Royal Oak & other locals.
Plan on returning every year. Thanks so much for making my stay so comfortable. I’ll be leaving on Sat and I’m sad to go. Sitting here sipping tea & watching the boats sail by I’m reminded we are all like ships in the wind. Who knows what next year will bring. Anyway, come what may if all is well, I hope to return to No 1 Boathouse next year.
Thanks again and thank you Anne for all your hard work.
Georgia Thompson July 09,
Our ‘Eleventh Hour’ booking was certainly inspired!
Fabulous weather everyday. Rye is a delight. Tenterden is also lovely particularly if you like to browse antiques. Comfortable apartment. Altogether a wonderful week.
Chris & Heather Hetherington Nottingham 4.8.07 - 11.8.07
As bird-watchers we found Rye Harbour & Dungeness Nature Reserves very interesting. Seeing the kingfisher on posts outside the flat was a bonus (every day!)
Yvonne & Pete Allen Rowhedge nr Colchester 6-13 OCT. 2007
Our first visit to Rye – we came down for a friend’s wedding – and what a lovely time we’ve had! Days filled with Art, Culture and Gardens, the South East offers such a lot. Hastings Old Town was a revelation with its Net Sheds, gift shops, bars restaurants and the De La Warre Pavilion at Bexhill was breathtaking! Rye has plenty of bars & restaurants for evening entertainment although suffers a little from ‘London Prices’. The flat has been a clean, comfortable & well-equipped base from which to explore the area. We hope to visit again.
Annabel Roberts & Jim Galloway 02-08 – 08-08-08
What a find. We’d stayed in Rye before but decided to do the self-catering this time. A lovely house, great views and with the fine weather early in the week, breakfast on the verandah just put the icing on the cake. If you eat out (but with such a fine setting, why bother?) avoid the Kettle of Fish – rarely does a piece of cod taste like a cod-piece!
SI Italian is quite superb, so is the Rainbow Trout at Broad Oak. And for a short trip out, do not miss MERRIMENT GARDENS – the best kept gardens we have ever seen.
Ann & Ron Meiners-Drummond, From Sunderland 12-19 July’08
We enjoyed our stay here very much. Rye is a fine little town, with typical English streets and shops. We liked the English custom to form queues/lines in shops, and even on the market. It is very polite and efficient and fair. We visited Sissinghurst gardens, Bodiam Castle, Penshurst Place & Gardens, Great Dixter (Northiam), Hastings, Canterbury by train and also enjoyed very much apartment with its rich scala of facilities. We are very satisfied about apartment, weather, surroundings and the kind people.
Hans & Hannie Hoogland Houten Holland 21-28 June 2008
Very comfortable, enjoyed ourselves
Snow in Spring! Great for an Aussie couple
Battle was something v Heaps of photos of Buildings
Food in Rye : SI Italian – No! Ship Inn - No! Copper Kettle – No!
The Bell v The Mermaid v The Anchor v
& you must go to the Rye Deli – Great tucker. Great markets on Thursdays.
Merci, cheers – enjoy.
Howard & Jane Riach Sunshine Coast, Nambour, Queensland Australia 1-8.4.08
After the hectic pace of London it was nice to come back to the peace and quiet of Rye. We had a lovely break; sunshine every day for the whole of our eight day stay, it was great just to drive around the villages and open countryside, and feel at one with the beauty of your surroundings, having my first cup of tea on the balcony in the early morning sun was a real treat, and one memory that did stay with me until I come back again, as I surely will. Rosalinda. Thanks Chris for being so patient when we locked ourselves out, remember future guests, don’t leave key in back of door and close it. The apartment was comfortable and welcoming with everything to hand. Made use of washing machine & dryer, so no dirty washing to take home, yippee!
Kind regards
Rosalinda & Colin, London April 2010
We did as we said in April 2008 – we returned to Rye & No1 The Boathouse. Weather this time was a big improvement. We planned to visit less places this time and therefore we managed to see all we planned.
A note for arctophiles – visit Bears Galore (Rye) and the antique/bric-a-brac shops in Rye and Old Hastings.
Got a sweet tooth? Then the Old Sweet shops and cake shops are well worth a look too. Incentives enough to consider another visit sometime.

David– North Yorkshire, May 2010
This is our fourth stay at the Boathouse and our third one in No1. Rye is a great base for exploring Kent and Sussex.
Rochester is well worth the effort and so is Dickens World at Chatham (which we did last year). For shopping Tenterden is very good with lots of individual shops and The Lemon Tree is very good for lunch and teas. Hope to return again next year.
John & Beryl, Sutton Coldfield May 2010
Our second very successful stay at 1 The Boathouse, combining walks and attending the Florestan Festival at Peasmarsh. Enjoyed a wonderful and, these days, not expensive meal at the fish restaurant in Tower St. Rye has some wonderful shops – my favourite is My Sweet Old Etcetera at 3 High St which fronts as an antique jewellery place but out the back has some very clean second hand women’s clothes at a modest price. I’m away with two pairs of linen trousers and a Hobbs jacket (£28) to wear at a wedding. Not to mention the fascinator from Medusa (I think) for £14.95 – a similar one in John Lewis was £75! And my husband bought a jacket in the Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Altogether a very successful stay. We plan to be back next year for more walking, music – and clothes!!
Andrew & Margaret, Brighton June 2010
A lovely peaceful and very comfortable apartment.
The raft race was so much fun, Simply Italian is an excellent place to enjoy a meal, food and service excellent, price very reasonable. Ship Inn, don’t bother, good pub is the Crown, we will be back for the raft race next year.
Jackie & Neil Cross 20/7/08
Excellent location, great time watching birds, including emus! Enjoyed our visit to Lamb House (we’re Tilling fans), Small Hythe Place and the Romney Marsh churches. For eating we strongly recommend the Globe Inn, just at the start of Military Road, 40’s décor/theme and superb gourmet food. We also liked the Flushing Inn – great crab sandwich lunch & old fashioned service. Royal Oak on the Peasmarsh Rd and the Royal Oak at Brookland are also excellent.
Margaret & Roy Edgar 10-17 May ‘08
Nice apartment with lovely views.
A Sussex girl & a man of Kent (or Kentish man?) and yet we’d never been here! Went to Bexhill for an exhibition at the De La Warre pavilion – lovely building & good exhibition followed by ‘promenading’ on beach! Good weather & great pub – The Mermaid – in Rye – great food as well – when they do it! Dungeness fantastic – wild & sparse. Rye Harbour reserve excellent …. And the best thing? …. Southerners ARE friendly!!
Anne & Roy Palmer Bristol 6th – 10th June 08
We loved it here! A must : The Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and beach, Winchelsea, (especially very early in the morning) and the walk to Camber castle!
To drink: Try Ypres Inn
To eat: Try the Fish Café for lovely sea food.
Hope to be back soon.
Tom Goos & Evi van de Heyer 26th July - 4th AUG 2008
Lovely apartment in relaxing setting.
We made Rye our base to explore the Southeast of England. Day trips to Canterbury & Chartwell as well as visits to Battle & Dover. Scotney Castle was our hidden gem & well worth. Ellen Terry’s home, a nearby (Small Hythe Place) National Trust property was also fascinating.
Dinner at the Woolpack Inn, just east of Rye, near Brookland, was atmospheric & very good.
Thanks to all for the tips & advice.
John & Leslie D’Elia Virginia, USA 31 Aug – 8 Sept 2008
We have had a short but enjoyable stay here. The town is very special and memorable. The Deli is well worth a visit – for a lunch with a difference. Eating out: The Union Pub good simple food, The Italian Simply basic.
Dungeness is a special place & should be visited and a trip on the RH&D light railway won’t go amiss!
Thank you for the warm welcome by the lady who looks after the properties. By the way we both think the emus have been upgraded to ostriches.
Have a good holiday.
Jenny & Bob Peterborough 21/9/08 – 23/9/08
3rd visit to Rye but 1st stay at the Boathouse.
Good comfortable accommodation with all you need. Wifi access very handy. Lovely watching the tidal flow of the river & boats going by.
Great fillet steak at the Tuscan Kitchen on Lion Street. Bar food at the Mermaid good value. Don’t go to the Monastery restaurant – appalling.
Battle Abbey a must. Marion Pullen & Mick Baden, London, July 2010
We’ve had a great week here at No1. So peaceful and calm, what a change from the rat race. We walked the town twice, the second time with the audio guide (well worth it). Also visited Hastings, Bodiam and Battle. The train ride to Bodiam from Tenterden was bumpy but worth the try. We were halfway down the bottle of bubbly before the thought struck us that it was for the housekeeper from the last tenants. Oops!!
Malcolm – Yorkshire
Charlotte – Kent, August 2010
We have had a very enjoyable few days here at the Boathouse and the weather has been perfect. Loved Rye and made some great discoveries in the area. One of our highs was the little church, St Thomas Becket isolated in Welland March just south of Appledore.
We thought the apartment exceeded our expectations. We would come again.
Thank you.
Peter & Liz, Burgess Hill Sept 2010
We have had a great holiday, with pretty good weather. We enjoyed Camber Sands, Winchelsea and Winchelsea Beach. It was quite exciting when the estuary overflowed and came half way up the curb outside the flat! Marino’s fish & chips was excellent.
Steve & Abby, St Albans Sept 2010
A short stay to see the bonfire and visit the ‘deli’ – neither disappointed! Flat is warm and clean, very welcome at this time of year.
Despite inclement weather Rye always has something to offer its visitors. See you in 2011 we hope!

Terry & Judith, Hampshire, November 2010
We had a great time. Rye is a gem. Has wonderful meals at Fletcher’s House & the Mermaid. Winchelsea magical. Bluebells were beautiful. Accommodation comfortable and well-kept.
Wikus & Mignon de Jager Bradford, West Yorkshire April 19-26 2008
No1 Boathouse – Congratulations on your 1st year.
The location is excellent for enjoying all that Rye has to offer. We’ve tried a variety of pubs & restaurants throughout the week, all have been good.
The Ostriches, baby seagull & river have added to the enjoyment of sitting on the balcony in the sunshine with a large G&T!
Shop at Jempsons in Peasmarsh – good supermarket …. Cheap petrol too! (shut Sundays)
Walk 5 mins along the footpath, right out of car park, to get to the steps leading to Ypres Pub and fresh fish shop on bridge.
John Cawdron Antiques on Market Road ….. good selection, friendly & willing to haggle ….!!
Brian & Angie Beckenham Kent 11th – 18th Oct’08
Rye is a very nice place to stay in – and all the surroundings are wonderful. We enjoyed the services of St Mary’s Church on top of the hill.
We ate at one of the pubs in town – we drove around Canterbury, Folkestone, Dover and many other places. At this time of the year there are still flowers all over the gardens which is different in comparison to our home area.
If you go from one village to the other you’ll see pure nature with sheep and trees and hedges and water groves. You’ll find ancient churches and houses which are built in a very nice style with brick walls and chimneys and more details that give them real character. As if time had stopped.
We are delighted by all this and wouldn’t have expected it that wonderful!
The time was too short so we’ll have to come back.
Bernd & Britta Rothert Ludensheid Germany 25th Oct – 2nd Nov
The weather has been brilliant, so we didn’t get to see everything we wanted to – too much lazing on Camber Sands. Golf at Lydd Golf course very reasonable and you can hire buggies as well.
All a great excuse for coming back.
Apartment was great – shower boiling!!!
Thanks for a most enjoyable stay.
John & Sue Darge
Scotland, August 3rd -7th 2009
We had a wonderful stay here on our honeymoon, it was the perfect place to be.
Only regret is we didn’t book for longer.
The Ship Inn was excellent for food – not cheap but what we got what we paid for and it was absolutely delicious – best steak ever!
Very grateful for the incredibly thoughtful touches of a box of chocolate, and the bottle of champagne waiting for us when we arrived, thank you so much. We would love to come here again. All in all, a beautiful start to our married life together., Sophie & Seamus, Aug 8-10th 2009
Really enjoyed our stay. Apartment ideally placed for walking into Rye yet so quiet & peaceful.
We’d recommend the Cobbles Tea Room in Rye for coffee, cakes and light lunches and we bought excellent sausages at Winchelsea Farm Kitchen (cards in information file). There’s a Waitrose and Tesco at Tenterden. For anyone interested in plants & gardens Merriments at Hurst Green has a good range of plants, a good restaurant & a very pretty garden. We also bought some camellias from Coghurst Camellias (Near Three Oaks). They also sell alpines but the camellias are a real spectacle at the moment – excellent plants, good prices and hundreds to choose from.
There are so many places to visit we just couldn’t fit them all in so look forward to next time.
Gwen & Jim, Aspley Guise, March 2010
A lovely week in Rye with lots of walks, good food and incredible weather. An excellent ‘Plan B’ to our diving holiday in Egypt, not possible because of the volcanic ash cloud! Apartment ideal base, comfortable and well equipped. We particularly liked the Ship Inn for cocktails and ‘The Place’ at Camber Sands for a good lunch followed by a nice beach walk.
Thanks very much!
Peter Boxer & Charlotte Crowe, Rabat – Morocco April 2010
Great to be back again. S.I Simply the same.
Very relaxing week after all those dark London months.
Isobel & Wilf, May 2010
Fantastic few days here – recommend to join National Trust as there are so many places to visit – Hastings Castle & Battle Abbey also highly recommended. Ship Inn – Rye, excellent food. No complaints with apartment. Very good!!
Dan & Joset Scott, May 2010
We have travelled a long way to explore Kent & Sussex & we haven’t been disappointed. A cosy apartment in a super location.
Thanks for the fizz - a welcoming start to our hols.
Our find: “Cook” a shop in Tenterden (next to M & Co) sell ready made home cooked frozen meals. Loads of choice but we stuck with Lasagne (£6.95). 1hr in oven – cook from frozen, serve with salad & a chilled vino – follow with strawbs & cream – gorgeous.
Bob & Lesley, Tyne & Wear June 2010
Lovely comfortable apartment. As you approach Rye along the canal it appears perched on a hill like a medieval place of pilgrimage.
With its old cobbled streets this impression is sustained when you arrive.
Brian & Cathy Medhurst, April 2010
A very comfortable apartment in a good position with welcoming bottle of bubbly!
Good local walks and we have been blessed with terrific weather for time of year.
Never tired of walking around Rye and enjoyed meals at Simply Italian & Mahdi Spice.
Bought local caught plaice at fish market & enjoyed the meal in!
Thursday market worth a visit for exceptional value fruit & veg.
All in all a very relaxing holiday & for us something different. Will come again.,
Dan & Geraldine Turner, Beckenham Kent, 19-26 Sept 09
Thanks for a lovely, clean and comfy apartment.
Our 1st visit to the area. We enjoyed the miniature railway at New Romney, travelling from Hythe to Dungeness. Good fish & chip lunch Brittania Inn.
Rye’s Historical Audio Town tour is fantastic.
As is the views from St Mary’s tower. Our highlight has to be seeing two seals at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve,
Rosemarie & Roy, Godalming Sy., 20th – 23rd Sept 08
Really great accommodation with good views, including the 2 resident seagulls. Weather really mixed with really strong winds & squally showers. (Yes, - That Week!)
Good walks although wet with lots to see. Visit to Tenterden was good.
Comfortable residence, a nice break. Shame about the weather!
Alan & Jan Coakley Harpenden Herts 7 March – 14 March 2008
Lovely apartment, great weather – not as wet as Wales!
Visited Small Hythe & Tenterden – ‘a must’
As well as Dungeness for the ‘quality’ houses. Good location close to town only with PARKING!!! Will recommend this to friends.
Peter & Ann Johnson Pembrokeshire W.Wales 3-9 May ‘08
Lovely apartment and location.
We have had a wonderful week’s holiday which commenced with a warm welcome from the housekeeper Anne. Hopefully we will be back for the third time next year.
PS. Inkerman Arms, Rye Harbour Road for a good Sunday lunch.
Beryl & John Tyler Sutton Coldfield 17-23 May 08
Also 2nd visit to Rye but first time to the Boathouse. Weather variable but nevertheless had a really relaxing time. Gulls, gulls & more gulls – but rather endearing. As ‘twitchers’ – a really disappointing, limited range of birds. Fleeting glimpses of one Kingfisher, Redshank, Oystercatchers galore, and the ‘rare’ sparrow (in London at least). DON’T FEED THE JUVENILE GULL!! HE IS RELENTLESS BUT NEEDS TO FEED HIMSELF Naturally!!
The Boathouse is an excellent base from which to explore Sussex & Kent.
Make sure you visit ALL the ancient streets of Rye – very easy to miss them.
Some useful tips :
If arriving Saturday – stock up on any provisions (milk, bread, etc) as Supermarket is CLOSED ALL DAY SUNDAY. The Co-op in Winchelsea Beach is open 7 days a week just down the road.
Sunday papers – can be found near Rye Station. Everyone heads for this – so follow the crowds!
Ypres Pub – the best food around but a little expensive. Well worth it. All day breakfast & super PANINI – useful for a snack or Sunday breakfast
325 bus goes to the Harbour
Andy & Lorraine London
As a young London couple used to noise and traffic Rye was a lovely change. NOT into bird-watching, but bought our bikes and went on some great rides to Camber Sands, Rye Harbour and Winchelsea (where Spike Milligan is buried!!) There’s an Odeon cinema in Hastings and we loved the George pub for food. The apartment’s great – modern and comfy – loved watching the boats go by and the feisty baby seagull made us laugh.
My only complaint is the exceptionally bright lights in the lounge – a table lamp wouldn’t go amiss!
Alix & Rob (London) 16-23rd Aug
Force 6-8 veering to Force 9 in the channel.
Nice & cosy in No3. Herring gulls & cormorant (or shag) spotted 7am on Mon 8/11. Wind turbines just visible. This is our 2nd visit to the Boathouse & we love the tranquillity of the place (sorry for spelling!) The rawness of the weather with bracing winds & warm rain makes for an ideal bolthole from ‘Old Smokey!’ The lighting is ideal for both photography & painting & we will come again as log as our legs will carry us. Hopefully we have a kind & mild winter here in the S.E. Apartment very clean & comfy.,
Thelma & Bill (Hendon, N. London), 8/11 – 15/11/8
We have stayed at the Boathouse before in April & October so thought a summer visit would be good. Showers most days, spectacular thunderstorm on Wednesday evening and Force 8-9 gales today (Thursday)!
The Boathouse is an excellent base to explore the lovely old town of Rye and surrounding area.
Visit Dungeness for a different day out. Views from the top of the Old Lighthouse are great, travel on the RH&D R 13 mile steam train route or walk on the miles of sandy beach at Greatstone or visit the RSPB reserve. Then buy the best fresh fish at the slab opposite the Pilot Inn.
Dungeness, you will either love it or hate it – but you will never forget it!
For lunch take the road by the canal to Appledore. The Black Lion is a lovely village pub with excellent value sandwiches & ploughman’s.
Mike & Sue, W. Sussex, July 2010
We have had a great week at the Boathouse! The fizz got us off to a good start – thank you. The apartment has been very comfortable and peaceful – a real haven. We have enjoyed trips to Hastings Country Park, where we enjoyed a walk and picnic in a beautiful location overlooking the sea, Bewl water, again a walk & picnic, and the National Pinetum at Bedgebury. Weather has been good, warm and dry, just right for a walk and picnic. One highlight was our visit to Webbes at The Fish Café in Tower Street. We had an excellent meal – best mussels I’ve tasted – so fresh!
Ian & Sue, North Walsham Jul 2010
Very restful stay in Rye after walking the 1066 way from Pevensey. Boathouse excellent. Binoculars very much appreciated – some good walks/birds at Dungeness and round Camber Castle. Mesmerised by tide – spotting & waiting for boats. Many thanks for v.good apartment.
Keith & Jill, Aug 2010
We very much enjoyed our stay.
One of the highlights was watching Richard Branson, supported by his family, kite surf across the channel from Dungeness. Thank you for the binoculars – a gem of an accessory! Also the welcome fizz was great!
Monica & Linda, Aug 2010
First time in the area. Great comfy apartment, well equipped. Bailey, Simply Italian and Carey’s great for food.
In Hastings De Pola on Marine Parade a must for home made Italian ice cream. Great farm shops around – Middle Farm on route to Brighton (never seen so much cider!) Train from Dungeness to Hythe very good with an interesting stop at New Romney to see the model train display also Kent and East Sussex railway at Tenterden very good trip. One week not long enough to see everything.
Dorothy & Frank – Perth Scotland, Sept 2010
Another repeat week at the Boathouse revisiting familiar places. Area seemed busier this year – loads of bird watchers at Dungeness apparently looking for a Lapwing Bunting which Alan almost stood on! Saw Egret on riverbank opposite apartment, but our bird knowledge is sparse! Weather dry with a couple of dull days, but windy – only managed 3 days in shorts this time. Eating out good, Carey’s, Baileys and Simply Italian all v. good. At Rye Harbour try William the Conqueror Pub – does lunch and evening meals (after 7.00) with boules being played outside. Avocet Tea Room and Gallery worth a visit. Will no doubt return again.
Alan & Sheila, Perth Scotland Sept 2010
Great little town with exceptional selection of places to eat.
Simply Italian – Good food, good portions, good value. For something different try MAHDI SPICE – no air conditioning but wonderful Bangladeshi food. The Crown & Flushing Inn – good but expensive! Ypres Castle Inn not cheap but great food. Baileys was a surprise – their mixed grill & steak were very good. For the best pub grub, home made, fresh veg & gravy try the Bridge Inn @ Winchelsea.
DAYS OUT – Take the steam train from Tenterden to Bodiam Castle.
Canterbury – always worth a visit.
For N.T. Members (& others)
Scotney is a must along with Sissinghurst (of course).
For a walk – try Rye Harbour to Winchelsea via Camber Castle.
If you like fish – try the Fresh Fish Shop on New Road.
Cheap & fresh and landed daily.
ENJOY!,
Mike & Rene Fordham, Princes Risborough, Bucks, 8/8-15/8(09)
Arrived for an anti-valentine break with a heavy heart and stressed with work pressures. The deep peace of the tranquil surroundings have recharged my spiritual batteries. Lovely apartment – warm welcome from Joy and sunshine! I will be back. Thank you.
Diane, Maidstone, 13-16 Feb 09
Thanks as usual for the well kept flat. We come regularly but seem to have become creatures of habit. Lunch from the Deli to eat back here, mornings in Rye and afternoons at Dungeness & Rye Harbour.
Unexpectedly better weather – only one damp morning so afternoon walks with some sun and no wind. Evening meals at Landgate Bistro (mid-week set menu), The Ship (somewhat smarter & a little pricier) and Simply Italian. Look out for the Barn Owl hunting just before dusk on opposite banks and field.
Andy & Lindy H, Enfield, 18-21 Feb ‘09
Quiet location, convenient for travelling to various locations.
Highlights –
enjoyed Tenterden town then onto Kent & East Susses Railway to Bodiam Castle
the audio tour of Rye – obtained from the tourist office – really good
Best restaurant by far is ‘The Monastery’ 6 High Street 01797 223272 – Looks empty from the front but main area is behind
Sunday shopping – try the garage opposite of river to Tourist Office – basics available.
Martin + Rene Watts Lancs 23rd Aug – 30th Aug 08
Another enjoyable trip to Rye.
Enjoyed our stay in the ‘Boathouse’ very much, clean & comfortable. Visited Battle Abbey & Yesterday’s World good for all ages & worth visiting. Beach Retreat Café at Winchelsea beach ideal for snack/lunches/dinners; varied menu & reasonably priced.
Hope to be back before too long.
Hired bikes, tiring but good fun.
Jean & Bob London 8/9/08 to 12/9/08
Fantastic weekend in Rye.
Apartment Wonderful, far better than it looks on Website. Couldn’t fault anything, Housekeeper so helpful, truly amazing weekend
So peaceful and relaxing, really hope to come again.
Jennie + Des Eastbourne Sx 26 Sept – 28 Sept 2008
An excellent apartment in a fine location; no complaints about anything, though it took us a while to figure out the central heating. A couple of days just mooching around in Rye, in beautiful bright cold sunshine. We kept returning to Haydens for lunch, a jewel of an institution, especially for anyone with a gluten intolerance – The Fish Café is also excellent, a bit more pricey but worth it and very helpful staff.
The Standard was a pleasant pub, but our food, after nearly an hour and a half’s wait was disappointing. We also enjoyed the retro shop on Cinque Port Street and the Grammar School Record Shop, especially for folk and jazz. And Biddenden’s still, strong, Kentish cider is fine stuff!
Ben & Lisa Brighton 27-29 Oct
The flat was cosy and warm despite it being -4º outside! We enjoyed looking round Rye and getting reacquainted with the Captain Pugwash stories. Also visited Camber Sands, totally deserted, very restful.
Biddenden Vineyard – Excellent welcome – lots of free samples and no pressure to buy. Also toured Marsh Churches – a wealth of history here and interesting to see how they continue to meet needs of local community. So much more want to do but time has run out. Can we come again, please – or maybe we could hide in the wardrobe!
Chris & Mary Fuller, Enfield, Middx., Jan 2009 6th – 10th
Many thanks for the use of your super apartment – it was everything we needed with Champagne!
The binoculars allowed us to count the Ostriches and “supervise” the work being carried out on the large white boat. The weather closed in on Friday otherwise a dry week.
The countryside is fascinating with good days visiting Whitstable, Scotney Castle, various marsh churches and the unique area of Dungeness with Derek Jarman’s “Prospect Cottage” and his pebble beach garden served by a regular rail service on the miniature railway. The Fish & chip lunch in the Pilot was fantastic.
Should your visitors like fish (if not why are they in Rye?) then surely the best is at the Fish Café/Webbes here and at Hastings Roc’o’Nor. Wonderful food.
We are going home with fins and tails but we will be back.
Don’t forget Bateman’s at Burwash – Kipling’s Home.
PS Thank God the ‘Copper Kettle’ has gone and children are welcome now.
Sue & John, West Sussex Oct 2010
Had a great week – plenty to do & see. Enjoyed Bateman’s – even on a rainy day it was spectacular. Walk along Royal Military canal to Cliff End, along sea front to Pett’s Pools and back to Winchelsea was a highlight. Dungeness, a photographer’s paradise.
Enjoyed ‘Ship’ – good beer & atmosphere. Good food at ‘Pilot’ and Ypres Castle Inn. Our experience at ‘Carey’s’ not good. Landgate Bistro Excellent!
David & Julia, Sheffield Oct 2010
The weather this week was excellent – no rain during the daytime. Lots of birds on the riverbank – curlew, oystercatcher, tunstee?, cormorant etc and excellent birds at ARC Dungeness including sparrowhawk, kestrels, peregrine falcons etc.
Also about 300 waders at Greatstone beach – curlew oystercatcher, sanderling etc.
Bar lunches and drinks at the Black Lion Appledore of the usual v. high standard. Pub reached via the road from Rye beside the canal. Fish and chips at the Pilot Dungeness used to be excellent but it is now expensive and is the fish fresh or frozen?
Wifi and Freeview TV at the apartment both much appreciated. We will be back next year!
Mike & Sue, West Sussex Oct 2010
Thoroughly recommend The George for good food, conviviality. Lovely courtyard for Al Fresco eating. SI restaurant, always book – but if you don’t like children running around, don’t go. Apothecary House for great coffee, tea & cakes. Hope Anchor Inn/Hotel – up the steps & you’re there! – Good for Sunday lunch but pricey in the week!
Last, but certainly not least – what a wonderful, peaceful stay we have had at the Boathouse – we feel thoroughly rested and a little pampered! Thankyou, Chris, we’ll come again!!!
Christine & Mel Tanner, Caterham Surrey, 1/8/09 - 5/8/09
We really enjoyed visiting Bodiam Castle, Tenterden, having lunch in the Black Lion in Appledore, walking to Camber Castle then on to Rye Harbour although it was difficult to find a nice place to have lunch around the Harbour.
Like the previous entry we also enjoyed shopping at Jempsons in Peasmarsh.
We had delicious lobster at Carey’s and equally good marsh lamb at the Ypres Inn.
We were disappointed with Hastings and although we enjoyed the small steam train to Dungeness the ride could hardly be called scenic – mainly passing by the end of gardens!
Certainly exploring Rye was delightful and I’m sure we’ll return.
The Boathouse was a great location and comfortable for a short break.
Thank you.,
Tom & Julie from Oxford, 8th-12th May
We have really enjoyed our two weeks in this lovely apartment. We found it an ideal location for exploring the region, we must have visited most of the gardens and Merriment was our favourite. As for eating out the White Hart at Cripps Corner does very good meals.
Thanks for the champers.
June – Colin, Birmingham, 22/8-5/9
A truly wonderful 4 days in Rye, the accommodation was superb, even better than we expected, it was neat, very clean and tidy and also very homely. The housekeeper was very helpful.
We had a lovely time in Rye and would like to return in the future. We will definitely recommend the apartment to our family and friends.
Maureen & Malcolm Mackenzie Chatham 30th Oct – 2nd Nov 2008
Had a lovely short break at the ‘Boathouse’ – we enjoyed lots of walks around the area.
The walk from Romney Sands to Dungeness was a particular highlight with the short trip on the railway!
Lou & Pat 18th – 22nd February 2008
Our 7th visit and as usual a very enjoyable visit, weather kind, visits to Tenterden, Hythe (via the little railway) Sissinghurst, Sandwich (there’s a lovely secret garden there), Hastings, and Rye on Thursday (market day)
Rose & Mike Long Fareham, Hants 10th – 17th May’08
A most enjoyable holiday. A lovely area for cycling, flat over the marshes, hilly when travelling in land.
Sandra & John Carpenter St Albans, Herts 17-24 May 2008
A very wet Bank Holiday! Did not spoil the pleasure of our first visit to Rye. Trips to Great Dixter, Winchelsea village (a real haven of quiet), Winchelsea & Camber Sands, Hastings and Bodiam Castle etc etc. Liked the Woolpack at Brookland. The apt is so comfortable, and evening walks. This side of the river, towards Rye Harbour relaxing and interesting. Thanks!
P.S. Enjoyed the book selection – especially Owen Meany.
Alan and Maggie Jarman, Oxford 26-31 May 2008
Great Flatlet! We’ve enjoyed our stay, visited great places!
Eaten fantastically!, best gardens Great Dixter, delightful stay all round!
Graham & Lois 31st May – 7th June
Lovely lovely lovely surroundings & sunshine all week.
Another super visit.
Frank Fowler, Liz Rowland. South Ronaldsay Orkney 14-21 June’08
10th visit to the Boathouse!
Blessed peace & quiet.
John & Carole Owen Sittingbourne, Kent 24 JUNE 08
Second visit – even more peaceful than the last.
Flat great & very comfortable.
This time :- Dungeness – well worth a visit & small gauge railway. Fond memories of childhood.
Very little birdlife – disappointing but did see 40+ swans in a field!! Turnstones, oystercatchers, plovers, Med. Gulls, tufted ducks, Shelducks – at Rye Harbour.
Ypres Pub – great food but little bit expensive. Great for a special occasion.
Budgens (Supermarket) closed on Sundays
“Simon – the Pieman” shop – terrific for pastries & pies
Italian – good food but service diabolical,
Lorraine & Andrew, London 14th – 21st February 2009
We have visited this area many times but only discovered the Boathouse last year, this is now our 2nd visit. Many places to eat we found the Hope Anchor Inn excellent for a special treat. A visit to RSPB reserve at Dungeness for bird lovers.,
Mike & Sue Shirley, West Sussex, 18th- 25th Oct 08
Most comfortable week & appreciate instant warmth on arrival.
Rye certainly needs a whole day in itself to appreciate all its history. So many lovely pubs in Rye & the surrounding area. Good welcome in Ypres Castle Inn. They do let you try all the Real Ales before you decide. Good food too!
Two pubs we wished we had eaten at but didn’t have time in the end were at Stone in Oxney. The Ferry Inn and another both facing the evening sun & looked ideal for an early evening meal. Only 10-15 minutes north.
David & Liz, Devon May 2010
Never having been to East Sussex or Kent before. We found it a lovely area. Many interesting villages & towns, e.g. Biddenden – Goudhurst – Cranbrook & Tenterden. - Rye has many old pubs – with good selection of real ales, e.g. the “Bell” – The Mermaid & the (“Simply Italian Restaurant” on the Strand is good value, with really nice food.) I’d certainly love to come again. The “Boathouse” is clean, well positioned to explore by car from & within easy walking distance from town centre. Supermarket up by rail stn open 7am to 10pm Mon – Sat closed Suns.
John & Jean, Norwich, May 2010
A lovely, comfortable and well situated apartment. So lovely to come back to such a warm place following a long walk in the cold.
We walked to Winchelsea and met an informative elderly gentleman on route who told us a lot about the local area including tales of local celebrities!
We also visited Rye Harbour Nature Reserve but feel that we need to come back another time to do it justice.
Thank you Chris for the welcoming bottle in the fridge for us to welcome in the New Year. We aim to return.
Angela & Richard, South Nutfield, Jan 2010
A most enjoyable and relaxing stay as usual. Having been regulars to the Boathouse for a long time (8 always in Feb) we had our first really wet day and had to forego the walking boots. We had a rather different time at a delightful little cinema – converted from the village hall – in Hawkhurst. The KINO, Rye Rd, Hawkhurst, has a café and seems to average 6 showings a day of 2 or 3 different films. Great for a rainy day and better than the usual experience.
As always we recommend Simply Italian – on the Strand (wine voucher on board above sink) & we also enjoyed a meal at the Thai – Lemon Grass. Many thanks to Chris for the welcome beverages – Cheers!
Andy & Lindy H. Enfield Feb 2010
To think we nearly missed this opportunity of a couple of nights in this very comfortable, well appointed well equipped, clean, warm, sunny apartment! Early morning walk to Camber Sands quite breathtaking lunch at Webbes, fabulous taster menu indulged in Henry James at Lamb House (Thurs & Sun pms only) then the fish-shop opened up for us especially for gorgeous fresh plaice & prawns for supper. Don’t want to leave!
Harry & Lindsey Christophides, Apr 2010
Very comfortable flat. Welcome items were very much appreciated especially after a long flight from “Down Under”.
We loved everything about the area, especially Rye town centre. The trip to Battle Abbey N.T. was worthwhile. We loved the sausages from the butcher. Best we have had and they surely met the recommendation. Thanks a million Chris. Great to meet you. Hope we get back or see you in Aus.
Greg & Noela, Queensland Australia May 2010
A warm welcome from Mrs C, some sunny weather and this comfortable and well-equipped apartment led to a relaxing and enjoyable holiday, much of it spent re-visiting old haunts.
No11 was in clean and spotless order. You seem to have thought of everything. Thanks you so much.
John & Pat Murrell, Suffolk, 3/4/09 to 10/4/09
Lovely 60th Birthday weekend for Martin. If you visit Chapel Down vineyard at Smallhythe, it’s worth visiting the Bistro upstairs. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced & beautifully cooked & presented. We didn’t see the resident seal – better luck next time. PS Yes, the very large birds in the field opposite really are ostriches!, Martin & Jo Itter, Horndon on the Hill, Essex, 20th – 23rd December
Excellent base for exploring – Rye town on foot, further afield by car. Xmas day lunch at the Mermaid was very good.
Thoroughly recommend Greatstone for a wonderful walk along the long sandy beach; Also drive to Tenterden, take steam train to Bodiam, to visit Castle then back to Tenterden. Relaxing week away.,
Chris & Amanda, Odiham, Hants, 23-30 Dec
Another return to the Boathouse, our second this year. Despite the forecasts weather has been good and dry. Re-visited our favourite locations – Dungeness, Hastings, St Leonard’s & Rye Harbour. As photographers, always lots of interest. We like the wide open space down here. Eating out – Pilot Inn at Dungeness does great Fish & chips. Simply Italian good as always. Good bar lunches in William the Conqueror at Rye Harbour. No doubt we will be back again.
Sheila & Alan Borthwick Perth, Scotland 6-13 Sept 08
First visit to flat but not to Rye.
Will be back to flat, very good.
Fantastic weather. Walks from Rye Harbour beautiful – beach great. Union Inn very good for food. Do go to Dungeness it is a very strange place – nowhere else like it.
The Bell on The Mint is a very good pub.
Seafood and Steak Bar on quay was not very good.
The Walkers – Telscombe Cliffs 21/7 – 25/7
We are frequent visitors to Rye but found that our stay in this comfortable flat gave us a new perspective on Rye and its surroundings.
A very relaxing and enjoyable week.
Pat & Peter Jackson, Cheam 25/7 – 1/8 ‘08
A short break to explore the marshland churches (we already know Rye). They’re very special – particularly Fairfield, New Romney and Brookland, (where you get the added bonus of the most delicious Romney Marsh lamb at the Royal Oak – even better than Landgate Bistro (and that’s pretty good). Also recommend the Fish Café in Tower St & Simply Spice in the High St. Wednesday market disappointing – very little there.
Won’t mention the weather – unspeakable!
Birds seen from terrace, Cormorant, little egret, sandpiper & oyster catcher.
Sue Fasquelle & Oliver Darlington, Lewes 08.08.08 to 13.08.08
Area of amazing contrasts – viz. Dungeness & Tenterden! Flushing Inn recommended for special meat – excellent food good service & Generous helpings.
John Beever & Joan Barker Boston, Lincs 6/9/08 60 13/9/08
Nice welcome, enough good weather to enjoy the walking; Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Winchelsea & Iden. Interesting birds, long tailed tits, tawny owl. Woodpecker, egret (River Rother), and the ever present gulls.
Paula Amy Bright Milton Keynes 11/1/08 to 18/1/08
Beautiful weather for walks. Rye is an enchanting town. The harbour walk is bracing – we enjoyed a wonderful break from our busy lives – time to breathe!
Jack & Jill Walker Leigh Park Havant 16-20.2.08
Well-kept accommodation as usual.
Bird-watching at Dungeness, Rye Harbour & Pett Level – eating out at Ship (on Strand) Landgate Bistro (cheaper menu Tues – Thurs) Simply Italian (wine voucher enclosed here) all excellent. Weather unseasonably mild.
Andy & Lindy H. Enfield 20/2 – 23/2/08
Our fourth visit and we enjoyed it just as much. The weather went from snow to sunshine in a week and there were plenty of blue sky days. We love it here – the flat is super, so cosy and comfortable. I know we’ll come back. Thank you, Chris and lovely to meet you after all these years.
Judith & Clive Morgan Buckfast, Devon April 5th – 12th
Best self-catering accommodation I have ever stayed in. I was born in the area, and have had a great week tracing my past. Very restful and warm, no traffic noise!! An extra bonus. (28.03.09 David – here with Elizabeth for the week to see the area she was brought up in. Lovely relaxing week with lots of lovely views and walks).
Elizabeth Marsh, Rye/London 1938 – 1975 now Tewkesbury, Glos, 21.03.09 – 28.03.09
Area of amazing contrasts – viz Dungeness & Tenterden! Flushing Inn recommended for special meal – excellent food service & generous helpings.,
John Beaven & Joan Barker, Boston Lincs, 6/9/08 to 13/9/08
First visit to this part of England, completely enchanted with Rye. Webbe’s Fish Café/Restaurant recommended (near town gate). Flushing Inn also excellent & friendly but pricey (!). Walk across to Winchelsea via Camber Castle very pleasant.
Enjoyed white wines at 2 vineyards : Chapel Down (dry white, expensive) and Biddenden (fruity, medium, inexpensive). Very pleasant stay.,
Pete & Margaret Crittenden, Nottingham, 5-11 April 2009
Our 2nd visit here, lovely comfortable flat.
Enjoyed watching the ostriches which you can see across the other side of the river. If you drive up the road to Rye Harbour there is a gap in the hedge where you can get close to them.
I love watching them run.
Eileen & Patrick Smith, Watford, Herts, May 2-9 ‘09
Our 4th visit, but first in May, Superb weather, 21-24º and sun every day. Lots of spring flowers & blossom.
We always spend a lot of time at Dungeness, as well as Hastings Old Town – as photographers they are great places. Also Rye Harbour, Military Canal at Winchelsea, and Appledore & Fairfield Church.
Too hot to eat out much – Simply Italian good as always and the Pilot at Dungeness serves good food. Nice lunch at the pub in Rye Harbour – lots of outside seats.
Not much birdlife – winter visitors now gone but river and gravel pits always fascinating.
No doubt we will be back again, meanwhile back to cold wet and windy Scotland – after our terrible winter this week has been a tonic!
Sheila & Alan Borthwick Perth Scotland May 3-10 2008
We had a wonderful time here, the apartment is very comfortable & quiet. Thanks a lot for the welcome – beverages, Chris. We loved the Rye Bay Fish Shop and bought our fish & shellfish there every day.
For Hikers: From Rye to Hastings via Royal Military Canal & Saxon Shore Way, return by train (always 8:36 – 9:36 also), about 6 hours, lovely scenery.
Last but not least Great Dixter Garden & Scotney Castle!
Eva & Wolfgang, Schwabach (near Nuremburg) May 2010
Very nice apartment & peaceful. Many thanks for the bottle we didn’t expect came in nicely for Michael’s 60 birthday on Sunday 30th. Weather been good but ended up heatwave. Enjoyed East Sussex Railway, Scotney Castle, Dover Castle and last but not least Walmer Castle. Very interesting place, home of the Warden of the Cinque Ports (Queen Mother was one when she died). Also, nice walks around Rye Harbour. Thanks again.
Jean & Michael, Staffordshire May 2010
Lovely apartment – Nice touch welcome tray & wine. Weather good, rain only over night! Fish wonderful so fresh from market we have grown gills!
Good eating places – sorry to go will come again. Used the local buses to many places – able to use our bus passes!
Alan & Jennifer, Yorkshire, June 2010
Lovely clean & comfy apartment. Would love to return. Lots to do. Enjoyed Rye Harbours nature reserve, there were some open gardens at Winchelsea during the week that were stunning. Even better than Dixter.
Stephen & Patricia, June 2010
We’ve spent a very enjoyable week at The Boathouse. The apartment is very well equipped and comfortable. Thanks for the welcome tea tray and wine! It has been good to visit Rye after a gap of over 40 years! We enjoyed visits to Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Battle Abbey and Battlefield, The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, (The Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant & Bar on Marine Parade, Hythe is recommended). Would also recommend Simply Italian in Rye (on the Strand).
So many interesting things to do, we must definitely come again!
John & Margaret, High Wycombe, June 2010
We have been so lucky with the weather, 30º on Sunday and not much cooler for the rest of the week, fantastic! Wonderful location for a base. We have eaten out in most of the major restaurants in Rye and our top 2 were ‘The Lemon Grass’ and ‘Simply Italian’ on ‘The Strand’. The area lends itself and indeed, invites being explored. We unearthed ‘gems’ wherever we went. Thank you for the use of the property for the week and we hope that all the guests that follow have same enjoyment and happiness that we did.
Chris & Carol, Northants June 2010
Rye must be one of England’s finest towns – packed with interest and well cared for.
Recommend “Runcible Spoon” for good value lunches and “the White Vine” for cream teas.
Splendid walk to Rye Harbour then along shore to Winchelsea Beach and back via Camber Castle.
Wonderful old churches in the area, particularly Rye, Brookland, Fairfield, and Old Romney.
The apartment was a comfortable haven – 26 species of birds seen from the windows including barn owl, Shelducks and curlew.
Still lots to see and do in the area – would love to return,
Eric & Pauline Roberts, Cannock, Staffs 5th to 12th July ‘08
Have thoroughly enjoyed our return visit to Rye & the Boathouse. Visited some new (to us) areas in the locality. Discovered the Globe Inn in Military Road – the road to Appledore. Interesting décor, service and music – all reminiscent of the 1940s! Excellent menu, superb cooking and good value – we thought.
Barry & Moira Carter Stirling. 6-13 Sep 2008
Good to be here again – weather not marvellous but we have visited some favourite places and long standing friends. Thanks for the welcome – hope to return.
David & Margaret Shoreham-by Sea 31 Oct – 5 Nov ‘08
A pleasant quiet place for a short break. Good food & welcome at the White Vine in the High Street. A fine snug bar at the Mermaid Hotel. Fine walk to Camber Castle on to Winchelsea Beach, on to Winchelsea – wonderful town and good food at the New Inn, then back across the fields to Rye.
Nice Italian meal at Simply Italian. Simply wonderful place!
Sue & Paul Cook Bromley 13-17 Mar 08
We came – we saw – we rested! Enjoyed the bird-watching at Rye Harbour & Dungeness. Impressed with Bodiam Castle and its history. Recommend “Cobbles Tea Room” – Rye.
Elizabeth & Phil Davis Swansea Valley 19th – 25th April
2nd time here. We love the peace & quiet of the Rock Channel. Watching Boats & Birds enjoyed Eastbourne & Battle. Dungeness RSPB site lovely & Rye Harbour wonderful still for food. White’s Fish & Steak Bar, the Pilot at Dungeness, Cobbles Tea Rooms.
Pat & Tony Northrop 24/31 May 2008
1st time at Rock Channel, we loved the peace & quiet. The delicatessen in Rye High Street is excellent as are the many tea shops. Recommend Cobbles Tea Room “try the scones with jam & fresh cream”! We also had some lovely fish at the “Kettle of Fish”. Merriment garden centre is worth a visit (approx 17 miles). Apartment comfortable and very clean.
Irene & Jeff S. Wales 9th June – 12th June.
This is a real gem – such a lovely peaceful & interesting setting and good clean accommodation – with everything needed, close at hand!! We have really enjoyed the whole area. Good weather has been a bonus. Simply Italian STILL has wonderful food – and service!,
Margaret & Mac Clarkson, Worksop, 20-27 June 09
Very pleasant week in a new (to us) area.
Enjoyed watching the birds from the apartment – didn’t expect to see ostriches but there they were in the distance! A cuckoo performed for us although not seen it was definitely heard!
Enjoyed S.Italian for food and handy to walk to.
Highly recommend Jempsons at Peasmarsh although Budgens is fine in Rye.
Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway much enjoyed and we found Dungeness fascinating – I guess you love it or you hate it – but it’s unique.
Hastings Country Park – wonderful views & walks and the bluebells were spectacular.
Yesterdays Exhibition at Battle for a walk down memory lane – well worth it – don’t be put off by the apparent small frontage – it’s vast inside.
Generally the sun shone for us even though it was rather windy.
Shaun & Jacki Vance, (Southampton), 3rd May – 9th May 09
Week of mixed weather, flat comfortable, well equipped & warm.
Very good food at both Woolpack & Simply Italian, also Rye Deli is excellent. We enjoyed Great Dixter even on a drizzly, grey day (shop sells deli baguettes & cakes & drinks). Bodiam Castle visit and Battle Abbey very enjoyable. Sissinghurst needs a full day – café meals are excellent. Gardens vary with time of year, but we preferred G. Dixter – an absolute gem – both garden & house. Rye Harbour is worth visiting – amazing to watch birds from hides.
Robert & Barbara Bellett, Kirkbride, Cumbria, 9th-16th May’09
Great spot for a relaxing break and watching “electric” storm. Recommend Kings Head Udimore for good food & beer and friendly landlord.
For birders: Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has breeding colonies of Mediterranean Gulls (90prs) & sandwich terns (amongst others), Rose & Gerry, Edinburgh, 14-18 July
First time at the Boathouse & Rye, lovely location, very comfortable & well equipped.
Rye is a lovely old town. Visited Brighton by train, quite a busy resort, lovely pier. Had a day on beach at St Leonard’s weather beautiful.
Ate at Simply Italian, (best pasta ever). Ate at Carey’s Fish Restaurant, very good, lacking a little atmosphere. Bought fresh fish from Simmons Quay excellent quality, good price.
Walked to Camber Sands, lovely beach & Rye Harbour. Cycled to Winchelsea (not to be missed).
Clive & Pauline Splevings, 1st-8th Aug09
Just as nice as last year – lovely champers on arrival – luxury.
Wished we were staying longer – what were we thinking of!
Definitely come back for longer next time. Thanks.
Sue & John, Scotland 30-7-2010 1-8-2010
Thanks for a very good base for exploring some of East Sussex and Kent. Enjoyed seeing: Battle, Bodiam, Great Dixter & Scotney Castle, Rye itself.
Enjoyed walking Rye Harbour and Dungeness Reserves.
Enjoyed eating in the buzz of The Strand: Simply Italian, Carey’s, Tuscan Kitchen & The George quieter. Spoil yourselves with a breakfast at Hayden’s (after 10am) Food great all places best to book most places for dinner.
Roy & Lesley, Plymouth, Aug 2010
Ideal apartment for two & an excellent week of typically English weather. Bird life a bit quiet, but saw redshank, oystercatcher & common sandpiper from the balcony & the usual suspects at Rye Harbour. A barn owl near Winchelsea Station was the biggest surprise.
Ate well at the Hope & Anchor, & George, good pub food at the New Inn in Winchelsea and excellent India at the Gandhi. The Rye Art Gallery was a big surprise – Piper, Burra, Nash.
Colin & Sarah, London SE26, Aug 2010
Good holiday as last time – Can recommend Hope & Anchor for Sunday Lunch, Fish Café, Monastery and The Ship. Had breakfast out on the deck every day.
John & Kate, Chesterfield, Sept 2010
Came to Rye over 20 yrs ago and wanted to come back. This is a beautiful apartment reminds me of Mudeford on the Quay in Christchurch, Dorset. Peter has enjoyed the walks along to Camber Castle etc. Dungeness is something else, with a pub in the middle of nowhere. It has been a real pleasure being here having worked all over Christmas myself. Very tranquil. Hope to come back – soon!
Many thanks for the sparkling wine and cup of tea etc supplied. Yes Chris the weather was mainly dry even sun on occasions – It all went so quickly. Thank you very much! ?
Julie & Peter, Blackfield Mar 2010
We had a wonderful long weekend! The apartment was exactly as expected as seen on-line. Peaceful and great location!
Rye very quaint and most enjoyable. Sat on balcony in the sun with a bottle of wine while making our wedding invitations!!! Perfect way to spend our Easter weekend! Thanks
With best wishes
Richard and Carole
Simply Italian is a good as everyone says! We had an amazing meal. Giant king prawn! Very tasty. Chef willing to deviate from menu if you ask!
Richard and Carole, April 2010
Another delightful stay at The Boathouse. Weather was fresh but sunny.
Blossoms glorious. The ‘raised’ coffee shop/Delicatessen in Winchelsea a food lovers’ delight. Rye as fascinating as ever.
Michael & John, April 2010
Another lovely, quiet holiday. You just can’t find a nicer place to chill-out! Our new discovery this year – The Bell at Iden – decent food, a good pint and very friendly.
PS. Thanks for the bottle of bubby, a very nice touch!
We’ll be back!

Really enjoyed our stay – perfect situation. Spoilt for choice for food but the Monastery takes the Michelin Award.

Neil Whitstable, Kent 23/3/07
Fascinating birds – shag, oystercatcher etc.
So peaceful I slept well as did Peter. Area almost as good as Devon! The farmers’ market has wonderful quiches – try the pea & mint – really excellent. Recommend the Flushing Inn. Not cheap but wonderful food. Lisa very friendly & helpful,

No emu! But cranes seen at Dungeness in Sept.
Kingfisher, barn owl, egrets, redshank, heron & all common birds all seen from window!
Good pub food “Queens Head”. Icklesham. (Chef cooks while you wait).

Back again. Yippee. We saw a seal in the river, outside flat, how great is that, nice one. Central heating works well, warm as toast. Supermarket opposite rail station..
Nice Madras at the ‘Gandhi’. Hastings great for Fishermen’s Museum & real working boats. Winchelsea town very pretty & Pett. Rye has its own charm that you can’t forget. Flat is home from home with better scenery. Wonderful

Apartment excellent
Nice to watch the wildlife, enjoyable

Thanks for the tea tray and introduction to the Inkerman Arms, Liz, the large cod was extra large. We have never spent such a relaxing holiday. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The birds were a joy, especially the oyster catchers. A pair of little egrets were frequent visitors as were a pair of shelducks. The Boathouse is a venue we would like to return to.
John & Kathy King Islington London 12-25/05/07
A big plus for our holiday was the location and cosiness of the Boathouse. Dungeness well worth a visit.
Quite surreal! Rye Heritage Centre worth visiting for history of Rye.
We enjoyed watching a pair of cormorants diving for fish and their antics. A very relaxing holiday. We’ll be back!
Sue & Dave Mossop Mansfield Nottinghamshire 16th – 23rd June 2007
Great week couldn’t believe the hot weather. Fairlight, Hastings Country Park worth a visit for views of Rye Bay & beyond. Lots of rabbits.
Rye as usual, really lovely. Medieval fair was enjoyable & informative. Chilled out at apartment watching river & boat traffic. Sid & Sophie Seagulls have kept us company all week, we will miss them.
Bob & Jan S. Ockendon Essex July – Aug 07
We arrived frazzled after the trials and tribulations of the ‘big smoke’ and were quickly mesmerised by the tranquillity of the Boathouse – it was all we thought it would be and more. We had sunshine every day and though there was lots of frost we were warm and cosy in the apartment! This was our 2nd visit to Rye, but our first to the Boathouse. But as Arnie said – “we’ll be back”.
A few suggestions –
Audio walking tour from the Tourist Office
Farmers’ market on Wednesday
Sunday lunch in the Union Inn (East Street) – don’t go there too late as the ‘roasts’ go quickly.
Inkerman Inn, Rye Harbour – great fish
The Woolpack
Thanks Chris, also Barbara and Dean.
Thelma and Bill N W London 10-17 November 07
Very pleasant week’s holiday with kind weather. Have enjoyed our visits to K & ES Railway & Bodiam Castle, Winchelsea, Sissinghurst & Canterbury. Locally, Rye and the nature reserve at Rye Harbour. Our favourite eating place was Webbe’s Fish Café; for a pure blowout try the Woolpack at Brooklands. Have found Boathouse restful and comfortable.
J & G, Southampton, 15-22nd
An excellent base. Maps & Walking Guides very welcome.
Highlights: Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, walking to Winchelsea via Camber Castle, eating @ New Inn & returning over the fields, Charleston Farmhouse & walking to Berwick Church from there, Rye Deli, Rye Artists, exquisite Catholic Church & Dungeness!!!,
The Mitchells, Cwmdu, West Wales., 22-29th
We really enjoyed our stay and appreciated how well located and appointed the apartment was. Thank you Chris!
We visited many places including Rye and its environs, also Canterbury, Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Bodiam, Brighton (the Pavilion is outstanding! Well worth a visit).
The nature reserve at Rye Harbour is lovely and we also enjoyed the Hastings Country Park at Fairlight (a tip from a previous resident). All in all a great stay!
Thanks for a great stay, Chris, and we did enjoy the fizz.
Ann & Jeffrey, Adelaide, Australia July 2010
We enjoyed our week in Rye. It’s a nice town, not too crowded. We walked to Winchelsea, also a nice place. There’s a tearoom over there, but we forgot the name. We biked to Dungeness to see Derek Jarman’s cottage and garden. In some places the bicycle path is in a poor condition, but it is being worked on. The region is not really bicycle-friendly: roads are narrow and people drive fast.
We also visited Bexhill-on-Sea (contemporary art in the de la Warre pavilion) and Hastings. We were rather lucky with the weather, only one afternoon with rain.
The Ypres Castle Inn is the nicest pub, we think. We had to try it since we are from Ypres.

A truly lovely week spent here in the Boathouse.
This is our first time in this property, though not our first time in Rye, a place we love & return to year in year out.
We’ve had a very relaxing week here & this spot is very peaceful. Weather been good too. Agree with others regarding places to eat – Flushing is also a good place, though it’s closing soon, we like Webbes & Thai, not tried the George though meant to.
Dungeness holds a mysterious fascination & love the RH&D light railway – go every year! Beautiful stretches of beaches in Rye & surrounding areas. So much to see & do. Will be back to stay in the Boathouse.
Thank you for the sparkling stuff – very thoughtf
