The South East England / Sussex region
Further afield you are within easy reach of Winchelsea, Battle, Bodiam, Canterbury, the Channel Tunnel and the Kent countryside. The 'invitation only' golf links at nearby Camber are well known and the adjacent Sands are glorious at any time of the year. Golf courses can also be found at nearby St Leonard's and Seddlescombe. Other activities include sailing, windsurfing, fishing and an abundance of walks. The nature reserve at Rye Harbour boasts several hides. Cycling is an excellent way of exploring Romney Marsh using the tangle of narrow lanes, where you can discover Norman churches and 15th Century smugglers pubs.
Rye area
Travelling westward across Romney Marsh, the distinctive outline of Rye can be seen in the distance. It rises above the level green pastures, stretching from the sea to the far hills which formed the shoreline before the marsh was drained.
Once surrounded by sea, this fortified hilltop town played an important role in the defence of the south coast of England. These days, the river no longer harbours warships and is home to the local fishing fleet.
Meandering for over one and a half miles from Rye to the coast, the river forms part of the picturesque scenery visible from several vantage points in and around the citadel of Rye.
St Mary's church tower (usually open to the public) offers the best viewpoint to show the terracotta roofs of the many timbered houses. These ancient buildings, cobbled streets and secret passages, once the haunt of smugglers and highwaymen, regularly attract film crews in search of historical settings for period productions.
Many authors, musicians, artists and celebrities have made Rye their home, a medieval haven periodically visited by Royalty. In 1573 the title "Rye Royale" was bestowed upon the town by Queen Elizabeth I after a three day stay.
The sheer concentration of living history packed into this vibrant market town makes it the ideal base for a holiday of discovery, or a relaxing short break. There are many comfortable, welcoming hotels and guest houses and plenty of charming inns and restaurants.

Guestbook
“This precious stone set in the silver sea, This beloved plot, this earth, this realm, This England …..” Shakespeare, Richard II We spent two fantastic weeks here. This flat is cosy, comfortable and an ideal place to explore some beautiful gardens and National Trust properties from. We’ll recommend it to all our friends Brigitte and Ebershard, Germany 5/8/00 – 19/8/00
We've really enjoyed this holiday. To see a river instead of a road, a boat instead of a car is one of the best things about it. We watched a heron on the far bank last night and a fox on this side tonight. Rye is lovely, plenty of choice for eating out. The old streets and houses take you back in time. The accommodation is first class, very clean and comfortable. Clare & Geoff Shilton 16-30 AUG 1997
The Boathouse – what a find! A very relaxing week. Ideal spot to undertake some undisturbed painting and writing. Rye is great, so full of history and all within easy reach on foot. Geoff & Jen 5 Aug 06 – 12 Aug 06
Another relaxing visit. Wonders of our trip; Snow, Snow & more snow!! & Barn Owl!! Egrets, Heron, Hundreds of Lapwings, all from the window. Maureen & David Whittle W/Sx 4 – 3 – 05
Hit the jackpot for weather, nearly 100% sunshine all week. Apartment comfy & clean & no problems. Balcony a great asset in this lovely weather. Do hire the headphones from the Tourist office on the Strand, it makes a walk around Rye very interesting. Rye Harbour good for watching boats come in & out when the tide is in (it mostly seems to be out!!) Copper Kettle not good value unless you like oysters. Lovely fish from shop by bridge past bowling greens. Really relaxing & enjoyable holiday. Adrian & Janet Madin Shrewsbury 12-19 June ‘99
