The South East England / Sussex region
Rye, perched on a hill, with its picturesque Elizabethan houses, is one of the most beautiful towns in the country and is still the home of artists and writers following in the tradition of Henry James and others such as the playwright John Fletcher, authors Radcliffe Hall and E F Benson, and artists Paul Nash and Edward Burra. Captain Pugwash is also set in Rye! Slightly further afield is Dungeness where filmmaker Derek Jarman set up home, attracted by its barren unearthly landscape.
Tenterden is another attractive town famous for antique shops and for being supposedly the birthplace of William Caxton. There are also two local world famous gardens open to the public - Sissinghurst Castle Gardens was the home of the writer Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicolson, and Great Dixter, whose garden was made famous by the writer Christopher Lloyd.
History is not the only local attraction. There's a huge expanse of Blue Flag sandy beach at Camber Sands just five miles away - the light is so gorgeous it is regularly used for photo shoots and filming. The area has excellent cycling - Romney Marsh is famed for its long flat roads. There's a steam railway in Tenterden - you can even take a boat back from the medieval and dramatic Bodiam Castle. Local wines can be sampled at Tenterden Vineyards, where visitors can also see the hop fields. The South of England Rare Breeds Centre is at Woodchurch offering farm animals and a play area, ideal for the children, whilst slightly further afield, in the summer a day trip to Le Touquet can be made from Lydd airport, 10 miles (passports will be needed) or you can have a dinner flight along the South Coast. The sea resort of Hastings with its Edwardian charm is just 30 minutes drive away.
The Rye / Rye Harbour area
Rye is famous for its antique shops, cafes and restaurants and has a large number of independent shops on the high street.
There are beaches close by and the harbour is a lovely place to explore in the Summer months. Rye Fireworks, usually in early November is one of the main events of the year, with a large parade and a spectacular firework display.

This flat is stylish, comfortable, modern, clean, well located.... and great value for money. I could recommend this flat unreservedly to those travelling with friends and family (or even just a partner if you want to have a working holiday or you like lots of room). Rye is a fabulous place to just hang out, mince around the shops and eat delicious local food. With coffee next door and a paper shop opposite this is, for me, the ultimate chillout place to stay. The nature reserve is a 5 minute drive and the flat has a car port you can use. It is, in short, perfect! |
