Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
Whitesand Cottage is perfectly situated in a lovely New Hampshire style development, in the heart of Romney Marsh, surrounded by an area of natural beauty, with a net-work of cycle paths and the stunning beach and dunes of Camber Sands just a short walk away. There are good rail links (to Hastings, Eastbourne and Brighton), and the fast Javelin trains from Ashford mean that Stratford City and London are less than an hour from Rye.
The property is decorated in airy coastal shades and furnished in a traditional style to accentuate a beach house feel. French doors open onto a decked, pebble garden, where you can relax with a BBQ or if you prefer you can eat out at a top quality local restaurant. The cottage is suitable for families, quiet, clean and well resourced, including books, games, beach equipment, and a high-chair and travel cot if requested.
This is an ideal location for beach lovers but also those who enjoy outdoor activities (walking, running, cycling, water sports) and sight-seeing. There are many popular tourist attractions in the surrounding sites of historic interest, '1066 Country' and along the Kent coast toward Dover. For families, the children can easily be entertained (and educated) with so many fun and interesting places to visit.

The South East England region
East Sussex is situated in South East England, which is usually the warmest and driest corner of the UK - although that doesn't mean that you should leave your rain macs and umbrellas at home. In all weathers this is an ideal location. For beach lovers, the cottage is only a brief walk to the stunning stretch of sands at Camber with the natural beauty and wildlife of the dunes. Under three miles away the medieval town of Rye overlooks the coast and Romney marshes. With its cobbled streets, fascinating old buildings and array of quaint shops and good restaurants it is an essential place to visit.
Many other popular tourist attractions are located in '1066 Country', including castles and other places of historic interest: it is a short drive to Battle where the Battle of Hastings was fought and special events continue to take place. Hastings' resort is a brief train ride from Rye or less than 30 minutes' drive, through attractive countryside, it's ideal for traditional seaside attractions. You could stop off at Fairlight Country Park for cliff top views across the Channel to France. Other historic and seaside towns, animal parks and steam train rides are all accessible along the East Sussex and Kent coastlines. These include the famous resorts of Eastbourne and Brighton (by car or train) and Dymchurch and Hythe (by car or the cute narrow-gauge railway). A favourite trip for us is to take a traditional steam train from historic Tenterden (20 minutes drive) to the picturesque Bodiam Castle (which has a good cafe/shop and hosts events in school holidays). Whilst the fast Javelin trains from Ashford mean that Stratford City (Olympic Village) and London are less than an hour by train from Rye.
The local beach is perfect for sunbathing in good weather, and for running, walking and exploring the shore in all weathers. When the tide is out children can still paddle in sea pools and there are cafes and toilets in the car parks out of site, behind the dunes.
As well as having the wonderful Camber Sands a stroll away, there are many other areas of wildlife and beauty in the local area including the RSPB Wildlife Park, lighthouses and surreal shale landscape of Dungeness (a short drive away) and the lovely wildlife walks along the estaury at Rye Nature Reserve and Camber Castle. At Winchelsea beach (ten minutes drive), you can see pre-historic forests in the sand and observe sea creatures in the rock pools when the tide is out. As well as gentle walks, there are many local cycle paths through the countryside and a local lake for windsurfing, whilst Kite surfing can be pursued at the far end of Camber Sands. Pontin's Holiday Park, a short walk from the cottage, has an indoor swimming pool and other facilities that the children would enjoy, available for a reasonably priced day pass. Ten minutes drive away, Lydd Golf course on the scenic Romney Marshes is open to the public. Details can be found on their website.
The property is a five minute walk from local food stores, post office and pubs in one direction and a good quality bistro/beach cafe - The Gallivant, in the other. A short drive to Rye and you can chose from a selection of interesting shops and fine restaurants, there is also a supermarket opposite the station and a weekly market. Rye has several annual festivals including the Scallop Festival in February and Christmas Festival in December.

"Wonderful wonderful place to stay - great break"
We spent the late May bank holiday at Whitesand Cottage and had a wonderful time. The cottage was great - nicely decorated, really well-equipped with everything we needed and it felt like a real home from home for the time we were there.
The garden was a lovely sunny spot and very quiet. The kitchen had everything we needed - including a highchair and plastic cutlery and plates for our toddler. The bedrooms were a great size, with a travel cot (which we didn't use as we had our own - but at least next time I know not to bring it!) and lovely views from the back. There were even toys and games to entertain us although we didn't need them at all as we were very lucky with the weather.
The development where the cottage is located was lovely and quiet, and really pretty. It was at most 10 minutes walk to the beach, which is one of our favourites - miles of sandy beach and dunes.
Simone was more than helpful, answering all my questions really quickly and returned the deposit the day after we got back.
I would recommend this place to anyone and we are already looking to come back again! A truly brilliant holiday.

"Enjoyable weekend, lovely cottage, beautiful beach Rye and surrounding area have lots of interesting places to visit"
We enjoyed our weekend at Whitesands. The cottage was fully equipped and furnished to a high standard. We were fortunate to have a lovely sunny weekend, so we visited the beach both days. We found Rye a delightful town with many places to eat and drink. We also visited Great Dixter. Hopefully we will return to visit all the many other places in the surrounding area.
