The South East England region

1066 country, the corner of East Sussex where a monumental battle famously reshaped the nation, boasts a classically beautiful English landscape infused with an epic sense of history.

A landscape of moated castles, steam railways, picturesque seaside towns and steep-cobbled streets, this is 1066 country. Scenes overlayed through the passing centuries that today survive in composite to create the archetypal image of England. An England which, hundreds of years ago, had its fate decided here in this beautiful coastal pocket of East Sussex, where an Norman invasion force successfully landed on these shores and won a famous victory, forging a new nation and forever changed the course of this countries history.

In 1066 Country you’re surrounded by countryside and coastal reaches so abundant with the historical evidence of the past thousand years, it’s impossible to imagine how this country may have evolved had Harold Godwinson, later to become Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, won the battle of Hastings on the 14 October 1066, a date since etched into the national consciousness. As it was, the day and the crown belonged to William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy.

Thankfully 1066 country today, ringing with the history of events born from perceived betrayals and false promises, never disappoints its guests. 1066 country offers its visitors a countless array of famous historical sites and crumbling fairytale ruins of ancient castles. Immaculate country houses set in magnificent gardens are scattered across a backdrop of rolling fields dotted with sheep and woodlands intersected with steep-banked lanes that weave their way through tiny hamlets and charming villages. To the south lies the region’s coast, encompassing the towns of Bexhill, Hastings and England’s prettiest town, Rye, cradled to the west by the chalky bolster of the South Downs. This is soon to become a national park and bracing walks along gorse-lined ridges provide sweeping sea views to rival those of the raptors riding lazy circles in the thermals above.

Rye

White Sand, is a stylish development of two and three-bedroom cottages in the picturesque area of Camber Sands. Nestled between one of Britain’s finest sandy beaches and internationally significant grassland, this superb development is ideally situated – just a stone’s throw away from the beach, yet close to the picturesque, historic medieval town of Rye.

White Sand is just a short walk from Camber Sands. This wide, sandy beach is several miles long and is the perfect spot in which to breathe in the exhilarating sea air.

White Sand offers easy access to this beautiful beach, ideal for flying kites, making sand castles and spending relaxing family time. This wide open space is popular with windsurfers, bathers and horse riders and there is a network of footpaths and cycle routes criss-crossing the nearby wildlife reservation.

White Sand is designed as a traditional Fisherman’s village, these holiday cottages display an attractive mix of brick and blue and white weatherboarding with decking and shingle fronting the traditionally constructed seaside holiday homes. The contemporary interiors of the spacious rooms coupled with the light and airy atmosphere makes an inspiring, relaxing living space.

"A very comfortable house"

We were six adults and a dog over Christmas. The house had been decorated with a tree and the heating soon warmed the property. Lots of space for everyone to eat, sleep and socialise in comfort. The k… More

"Beautiful home from home"

Gorgeous holiday cottage with everything catered for, even down to the hairdryer, kids games, wi-fi, Wii and stairgate and travel cot. Cottage was really well furnished, however, the 2nd double bedroom only has a 4 foot bed, which was too small for two adults to have a decent nights sleep in, but this was the only downside. Sofabed in lounge was comfy but in ripped condition. Beach was just a few minutes walk away, as were a few bars and shops. Not much to do for kids (unless you count Pontins - which was filthy outside so we didn't venture in). Great break away for someone looking for a peaceful retreat.

"Great for a group of friends"

We had a really great weekend at this cottage. Very tastefully decorated, with a feel of quality: bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms. Not luxurious, but very nice indeed. Was well cleaned when we arrived, so there really wasn't anything not to our liking.

Table games as well as the Wii console with the rockband equipment (microphone, guitar, drums) is not to be discounted. I personally find it hard to find time for games like these, but on a weekend out with friends it was really a lot of fun.

I recommend this cottage highly, and will go there again myself.

"NICE COTTAGE BUT NOT IMPRESSED WITH TREATMENT RECEIVED..."

We hired the cottage for a weekend, group of friends, early 30s, celebrating a friend moving away.
The cottage is very nice, clean and tidy. Decent size rooms, really nice patio area.
We partied on the first night till late and the next day the owner called to say neighbours had complained. Our late check out time was cancelled and he kindly asked not to party again on the 2nd night. Very disappointing as the website says "Hen and stag parties..."
We left the house spotless at 10am on Sunday. The cottage is a semi-detached house and the next door neighbours said they didn't even realize we had been there!!
The deposit was returned after a week and a couple of chasing reminders.
