The East Sussex region
Generally speaking, the South East has a climate that is warmer and drier than the rest of the UK. Even better news still is that Rye Harbour has its own micro-climate and often enjoys bright, sunny days when just a few miles inland the skies are grey.
The surrounding area is steeped in Natural and Historical interest; it boasts miles of unspoilt beacesh and countryside, perfect for leisurely walks through the countryside or for pleasant drives to some of Sussex's medieval villages.
Whatever your thing is (walking, shopping, fishing, sports, food, arts, relax…..), you are likely to feel good around here.
Get the best of both worlds!
While the village is close to many beautiful known and sometimes crowded places, it offers a “get away from it all” feeling like nowhere else. Although well-worn, we feel the word “escape” gets its true meaning here.
This is a real place, authentic, not purely designed for tourism.
You can choose to leave the car here and enjoy everything the surroundings have to offer, or use it as a base to explore the region.
The village itself is located along the Rother River, which separates Camber and Rye Harbour beaches. The latter is less than 10 min walk, across a beautiful Natural Reserve. Not accessible by car, it is unlikely you get disturbed by anybody else…
Although rather small, the village offers the basic services with general store, pubs and cafes.
From Rye Harbour you will get easy access to the nearby Rye Citadel (really worth a visit), the famous Camber Beach, Winchelsea, Hastings…..

"Great cottage with large living/dining well equipped kitchen space perfectly located for history rich Rye & near sea."
We thoroughly enjoyed our short break - walked round the nearby nature reserve to the sea, enjoyed pheasant, quail and wild duck from Winchelsea, Rye’s walls, shops and history as well as the log burner in the evenings. Great location as so much is in walking reach or just a short drive away including good restaurants in Rye ranging from fish chips & mushy peas to authentic Italian to local game. Helpful informative guide in quick to warm, comfortable property and well equipped all round including thoughtful touches for wet weather such as the wellingtons! Take walking shoes if you want to make the best of the location. We didn't use them but two bicycles available in back garden. Fresh fish and shellfish places as well as farm shops for local produce abound. Enjoy!

"Very nice place in a great location"
We had a lovely stay in this comfortable, reasonably priced house. Well arranged, well decorated and well equipped. It is a great base for day trips. We had one afternoon of rain but both adults and children could be entertained with the help of DVDs and toys provided. The nearby beach is awesome, and we were alone to enjoy it! The house is well sized to invite friend to sleep (in a bedroom, not in the sofa) We will definitely return.

"Lovely House, beautifully decorated"
The Vigilant is a gorgeous house in Rye Harbour, which is a great location for accessing the Nature Reserve and beach. The house was immaculate, clean throughout. It was brilliantly decorated, with some really interesting touches (loved the pegs by the front door). A very well equipped kitchen. A big tick from all of us who stayed over the weekend. Nicolas, the owner, was great to deal with too. Thoroughly recommend.

AAA rated from booking to deposit return. Swift, straight forward service. The property is very well maintained, decorated with an eye for detail. We've had everything we could possibly need. The beach is awesome, and the walk to get there a real pleasure. Willing to return asap.

"The Vigilant - superb cottage in a gorgeous setting!"
We had a fabulous stay at The Vigilant. It is a wonderful cottage, comfortable, well decorated and equipped, in a superb location for local amenities/walks as well as being a great base for day trips out to the surrounding area. The addition of front decking and back garden means you can enjoy the sun at any time of day and the car parking arrangements means that all guests are catered for. The owners can also be complemented on providing easy to follow instructions to access the property; they had the foresight to put out basic supplies in the bathroom and kitchen which were very welcomed on our arrival. A manual holds all the info you could need, alongside some take-out menu's and tourist brochures/a map of Rye which I am sure will be added to by guests throughout stays - I know we left ours! Rye Harbour itself provides plenty with the nature reserve, local pubs (William the Conqueror is nice, quaint, friendly and the food cuts muster so if people need a break we could advise here), and shop - lovely people who are helpful with supplies, bus routes and walking routes. The opening hours were superb as well. Venturing into Rye's Tourist Information shop we found several places to visit during our stay with their staff being most helpful - top tips are Rye, Battle (1066 route a must!), walking to Winchelsea Beach via the nature reserve, and the steam train to Bodian Castle. I honestly couldn't recommend the property, or the service the owners provide highly enough. Our traveling party ranged in age from 30 - 70 years old and we all felt the same which speaks volumes. My husband and I haven't done a stay-cation together in our history as a couple usually preferring to travel further afield but after this experience we are converts! One point of interest for anyone looking to book this property, if you have very young children or are traveling with older people who are less able be aware that the stairs are manageable but steep.

"Charming, cosy and quirky cottage."
We had a very lovely stay at the Vigilant! The cottage is very comfortable, cosy and fantastically well equipped. From dishwasher to coffee machine, including traditional oven, microwave, washing machine, bikes, barbecue, log burner, books, etc... you immediately feel welcome and sure that you'll find everything you need. If you are staying with young children, you will also be pleased to find that the owners have thought about little ones too: toys, books, kids cutlery, high chair and cot are all provided. The cottage has been thoughtfully decorated and you'll enjoy the many original touches. A real bonus compared to so many 'cheap' accommodations where the deco is kept to a minimum (and the profit to a maximum!)!! In terms of the location, the Vigilant is situated in a very quiet square so you can relax and peacefully enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine on either the front or the back terrace. And if you fancy some company, the 2 local pubs are only a few minutes walk away. The beach and the natural reserve are also very close, while the charming old town of Rye is a short drive away. Our stay was very relaxing and enjoyable and I would definitely recommend staying at the Vigilant!

"Weekend break in Rye"
We looked at various options and chose this one, because of the pictures and its proximity to Rye Harbour. The property itself was lovely, although I couldn't seem to find any wifi access? Not knowing the area, I assumed Rye Harbour was the town, it wasn't it was a couple of miles away and there wasn't much around the harbour itself, a couple of scruffy pubs not very attractive. Also the cottage, is amongst a number of other ex coastguard cottages some of which were private and holiday rentals the others owned by locals. Generally is was a bit scruffy outside and not a very attractive view. As I say, the proper itself was lovely, water pressure on the shower was poor but decor and facilities very good. We spent most of our time in Rye itself with some great restaurants and at Camber because of the superb beach. So in fact, we only really slept at the cottage most of the other time we were out. If I came again, i would choose somewhere in the town itself because of proximity to things.
