Sticky End
About the home
Ideal for couples and perfect for a romantic escape, this charming Grade II Listed thatched cottage has been lovingly restored and furnished to a very high standard to provide a warm and welcoming holiday or short break retreat. Sticky End is located in the conservation village of Cottesmore in England's smallest county, Rutland.
Sticky End is an ideal base for exploring the region including the nearby busy market & impressive public school towns of Oakham and Uppingham, and is only 10 miles from historic Stamford (filming for the 2005 movie Pride & Prejudice and TV's Middlemarch). Rutland is a truly unspoiled rural gem in the heart of Middle England.
Rutland Water, along with the surrounding countryside and villages, provide a beautiful back drop for sailing, water sports, fishing, cycling, bird watching, golf and walking. Traditional country pubs offer excellent cuisine, stately homes such as Belvoir Castle, magnificent Burghley House (home of the famous Burghley Horse Trials and popular film set) and National Trust properties including Woolsthorpe Manor (Sir Issac Newton's Home) and Belton House at Grantham are within a short drive, whilst shopping tends to be "unique and antique" and a pleasurable world away from the shopping centre chains. Geoff Hamilton's legacy of his famous Barnsdale Gardens are close by.

Cottesmore is situated in the East Midlands county of Rutland, a small but beautiful and unsung area waiting to be discovered. Nestling in Middle England, it is bounded on the west and north by Leicestershire, northeast by Lincolnshire, and southeast by Northamptonshire. The historic town of Stamford is just over the border in a protruding part of Lincolnshire.
Sticky End therefore makes a perfect base from which to explore the immediate area as well as treasures such as Cambridge and Lincoln plus major cities such Nottingham, Leicester and Peterborough, all of which are within a 60 minute drive.
Rutland's greatest length north to south is only 18 miles; greatest breadth east to west, 17 miles. It is the smallest (in terms of area) normal unitary authority in mainland England (only the City of London is smaller!).
The two principal towns are Oakham, the county town, and Uppingham, whilst there are many quintessentially English villages to be enjoyed. At the centre of the county is a vast and picturesque reservoir, Rutland Water, which is an important nature reserve, serving as an over-wintering site for wildfowl and a breeding site for Ospreys. Rutland Water is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in Europe, covering some 1225 hectares(3100 acres). Completed in 1977, the reservoir is in the centre of Rutland and has a 25-mile circular track for walking and cycling.
The Rutland / Cottesmore area
Rutland is a haven for cyclists, walkers & those who enjoy the quiet pace of country life. Rutland Water hosts an aray of water sports, a pleasure boat, wild life and hosts the annual British Birdfair event at Egleton Nature Reserve (17-19 August 2007).
Oakham and Uppingham are charming market towns, famous for their public schools. Oakham hosts its own summer festival. Melton Mowbray including its reknowned Pork Pie shop lies just to the north of the county.
Stamford is a beautiful historic town with excellent shops and on its outskirts boasts the jewel of Burghley House home to the Burghley Horse Trials (03-06 September 2009) and a popular location for filming. The Stamford Shakespeare Festival (8 June-29 August 2009 - The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream & Oliver Twist) is held annually at Tolethorpe Hall where a picnic on the lawns, a stroll around the lawn, pond and flowerbeds and shrubberies all add to the magic of a visit to Rutland Open Air Theatre.
Three stunning film locations for the Da Vinci Code movie, Burghley House, Belvoir Castle & Lincoln Cathederal are all within a short drive.
Rockingham Motor Speedway and Rockingham Castle lie just 25 minutes drive south. The Stunning Belvoir Castle stands splendidly in the Vale of Belvoir just 25 minutes drive to the north. Leicester is home to the National Space Centre which is a 30 minutes drive. Several National Trust properties are within an hour's drive including Belton House at Gratham.
There are 3 golf courses within a short drive, including the excellent Greetham Valley.
