The Heart of England/Peak District

Rutland is an idyllic rural destination offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. While being a relatively hidden gem, Rutland is convenient to reach from all directions as it is situated in the heart of the East Midlands, making it the ideal location for short breaks in the UK

Quietly nestling in the quiet English countryside, England’s smallest county has much to share with you; not least, fantastic Rutland Water, an array of unspoilt villages and two attractive market towns packed with charm.

The picturesque Village of Hableton is nestled on an island on Rutland Water, which has over 3000 acres of water, with the surrounding shoreline preserved as a nature reserve.

Make the most of Scatterbrooks unique location by enjoying activities on and around Rutland Water, one of Europe's largest man-made reservoirs. Hire a bike from Normanton Cycle Hire and explore the 25 miles of shoreline, take a boat trip on the Rutland Belle and see the countryside from the Water. Enjoy local wildlife including Wildfowl and Osprey which are famously bred in the renowned bird sanctuary. Cosy up in a traditional country pub, the nearest being "The Finch's Arms", a two minute stroll away. Sykes lane has a butterfly fam, and a rock climing wall if you’re feeling energetic! Normanton has a fashing lodge, tackle shop and restaurant. Gardening enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Geoff Hamilton’s Barnsdale Gardens on the North Shore of Rutland Water. The Falconry Centre is close by and worth a visit as well as Lyndon Nature Reserve.

Scatterbrook House is a unique retreat as there are no shops on the island, however two miles away is the market town Oakham, which offers everything you need; a selection of lovely shops ranging from designer boutiques and antique treasure troves to supermarkets and a bi-weekly food market.

Oakham also has many popular restaurants, hosts its own summer festival, and is nearby the castles of Belvoir, Rockingham and Grimsthorpe.

Stamford, a beautiful historic town has more marvellous shops as well as Burghley House home to the world famous Burghley Horse Trials.

The Stamford Shakespeare Festival is held annually at Tolethorpe Hall in their open air theatre. This area is often used as a location for film and TV including Pride & Prejudice and Middlemarch.

"Relaxing at its best"

I have just returned home from a weekend break at Scatterbrook with my daughter, mum, sister and niece. We all had a wonderful time, exploring Rutland. Hambleton is such a peaceful, pretty village and our dinner at The Finch's Arms was delicious. Scatterbrook felt like home immediately and everything we could have needed was available. I will definitely be going back sometime and would recommend it to my friends.

"Total luxury - just wish it was my house!"

We stayed at Scatterbrook over the Easter weekend. There were 4 adults a 6 year old and a toddler, and we had a great time. The house is absolutely beautiful. The decor is superb and feels utterly luxurious. The owners were very helpful and our deposit was returned quickly. The house is really close to Rutland water so easy access for great walks and the pub in the village serves great food. We had a lovely weekend and will be back!
