About the home
Built in the 1850s out of local limestone with a typical Rutland Colleyweston slate roof, Postbox Cottage has an array of original features. The doorway to the bakery has been preserved, as have the beams of the loft, now forming the bedrooms and bathrooms, and in the lounge the impressive twenty inch thick stone wall has been left exposed.
The accommodation is on two floors. On the ground floor there is a spacious lounge and dining area with south and west facing windows. Ercol chairs, settees and footstools and a gas fired simulated wood burning stove offer style, comfort and convenience.
The kitchen, which was newly fitted in 2009, is fully equipped with a gas cooker, washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, iron, ironing board, electric kettle and toaster. Double doors lead out onto a secure courtyard complete with table and chairs so that you can enjoy alfresco dining
On the first floor there are two bedrooms, one double with en suite bathroom, and a twin room with separate bathroom with bath/shower over.

The Heart of England / Peak District / Leicestershire and Rutland region

Rutland was first recognised as a Shire County in the 12th Century, although the history of the area dates back to much earlier times. Many of the villages have names linked to Anglo Saxon times as far back as the 7th Century.
The county certainly lives up to its motto ‘Multum in Parvo’ which means ‘Much in Little’ as it only measures sixteen square miles in area. There are arts, music and food (including real ale) festivals held throughout the summer in both towns and villages and the Rutland Bird Fair held in August each year draws visitors from all over the world.
The towns of Oakham and Uppingham are full of interest and the Georgian jewel of Stamford lies just over the border into Lincolnshire. All three towns have traditional and farmers markets and a host of small independent shops.
Did you know that Rutland horseshoes are hung upside down? This is supposed to stop the devil making a nest in the bottom. There is a 500 year old tradition that peers of the realm visiting the county present a horseshoe, which is then hung in the great hall of Oakham Castle. The earliest horseshoe in the collection is dated 1470 and was presented by Edward IV.
The biggest change to the local landscape happened in the 1970s when the Gwash valley was flooded to create Rutland Water. Normanton Church was saved from flooding and now houses a museum filled with history and fascinating information about the area.
The Rutland / Edith Weston area
The village of Edith Weston lies on the south shore of Rutland Water, famous for its water sports, trout fishing and Ospreys. There is a fine church, a well stocked shop and post office and a pub which serves excellent food.
Rutland Sailing Club and the Rutland Water Fishing Lodge are within walking distance and the beautiful towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford are a short drive away.
