The Yorkshire region
Whitby is a town and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England. Nowadays it is a fishing port and tourist destination. It is situated 47 miles (76 km) from York, at the mouth of the River Esk and spreads up the steep sides of the narrow valley carved out by the river’s course. At this point the coast curves round, so the town faces more north than east.
Whitby is surrounded by the North York Moors National Park – heather covered moorlands and green valleys. The River Esk runs from the moors along Eskdale and through Whitby to the North Sea. The old port town is clustered on the east side of the harbour at the mouth of the river and beneath the cliffs. Opposite the old town, on the West Cliff, is the later seaside resort developed in Victorian times.
Below the West Cliff is 2.5 km of clean sandy beach ending at the picturesque village of Sandsend. The beach is very popular with holidaymakers in the summer.
In the beautiful valley of The Esk, where the river is nearing the sea, Ruswarp has an iron bridge and a tall, brick viaduct, an old mill where the wheel still turns, many old cottages at the foot of awinding hill where the 1800c church stands among flowers. Its tower and spire are 120 feet high. Inside is a bullet scarred crucifix, picked up at the battlefield at Ypres, Belgium 1914 - 1918.
Near the iron road bridge and alongside the level crossing close to the live steam train station stands the Bridge Inn, a good selection of home cooked food and has a good selection of ales.
Further up the road is a top class butchers only 30 yds from eskmoor cottage. If you fancy a delicious hot breakfast sandwich or meat for a BBQ. They also sell a wide range of cheeses, bread, cakes, cooked meats and pies and has a lovely delii counter.
Ruswarp also offers a nine hole golf course, tranquil leasure boating and a miniature steam railway plus a cafe and picnic area near the river which also has many ducks and swans.
Childrens indoor play area perfect for the family, cafe, serves food, animals (donkeys, goats)
A walk of just over a mile westwards takes you to Sleights, the next station on the Esk Valley line, whilst joining the Esk Valley Walk near the butchers provides you with the opportunity to walk across lovely open fields along a stone footpath into Whitby (one miles walk).
Ruswarp benefits from a regular bus service to Whitby, Goathland (Heartbeat 'Aidensfield') etc.
We are also a short drive away from Sandsend, where dogs are allowed on one part of the beach all year round, Grosmont, Egton, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay, Beck Hole and Mulgrave Woods.

"Eskmoor Cottage - perfect in all we needed, house, situation and environment"
The house: Extremely Clean, had all Equipment you needed for your stay, so that for instance you could Cook if you didn't want to go out to eat, wash-maschine if you needed and a comfy-room with TV. Environment: perfect for walks in the countryside "around the corner", a great pub to visit, a Place to take your Children (which we did not have with us, but we looked at it anyway as we have grand-chilrden that we will bring in the future. I must also mention the butcher just across the street which to us Swedes was unique! There you could go and get your breakfast - if you wanted to be lazy and not Cook - in the morning. Finally how Eskmoor Cottage was situated. Well, just down the road different buses ran so that you could easelay go into Whitby - if Whitby was your main interest - but also to many of the other places along the coast!

"very sweet cottage: shame about parking"
This is a clean, well-appointed cottage in the village of Ruswarp, near Whitby town. We stay regularly in the area to visit family but be independent, and our usual place was unavailable so we took this one. The cottage is on three floors so unsuitable for elderly or mobility impaired visitors. While the house is very nice, the parking problem (double yellow lines, on blind curve on a steep hill) put us off using the place again. In winter with wet, cold and windy weather unloading and loading the car, bringing home shopping and so on proved a bit too much for us (we are not young!). This would be fine for a young family in nice weather. There is a biggish garden at the back we didn't use because of the weather. The roadside location is not a problem as it is quiet in the evenings. the landlords ar every decent and left us a welcome bottle of wine for our arrival, and returned the deposit very promptly.

"Great cottage for all types of holidays and breaks"
Had a pleasant few days stay at this comfortable, clean and well-equipped cottage. There is a nice small private garden for when weather is good, and efficient heating for colder days. The location of the cottage, just outside Whitby (a mile walk down an interesting old footpath) is excellent for walking, using bus and train, and touring round by car - we managed to do all of these in 5 days! There is a great shop just near the cottage, called Jacksons butchers but actually sells bread, cakes, cheese etc, as well as meats and hot sandwiches for breakfast. The Bridge Inn is also just down the road so good for a local drink or meal. We also tried The Plough in Sleights and enjoyed a meal there. For a special meal out, the Number 4 Bistro in Whitby, on the West side - just past Whitby Town FC ground on The Parade - was very good, we really enjoyed our evening there.

"Cosy, clean cottage with lovely garden and a great base for exploring the area."
This cottage makes a super base for exploring either locally on foot or a short journey in the car will get you to Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend and the gorgeous countryside - all of these places make for a fabulous day out. Eskmoor cottage, although on the main road through Ruswarp provided a peaceful retreat at the end of a busy day. It has a great outdoor space at the rear which is reached via a short private path and is safely fenced in and there's also a covered bench area immediately outside the rear of the cottage and it all feels quite private. We had no problem parking up the hill, (a short walk from the cottage) even in August. We unloaded and loaded the car directly outside the cottage but you cannot park there. There are local shops in Ruswarp for provisions and anything else can be obtained in Whitby. The decor of the lounge and main bedroom is traditional, clean and fresh and in keeping with the age of the property. The lobby at the front is a handy space to leave shoes, etc and the separate door into the lounge means you don't lose the heat. Good value for money.
