The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
Situated between Poitiers, Angouleme, Cognac and Confolens, the Charente has varied landscapes and is full of culture and history. Meandering, lush river valleys, dense woodlands full of wildlife and fields of golden sunflowers are waiting to be discovered. Visits to historical sites, chateaux and pretty villages are a must and there are some great restaurants too.
The artists and crafts people of the area take great pride in using traditional methods to make their creations, often sold at markets or directly from their workshops.
You will find an easy, relaxed way of life and glorious sunny days await you !
The area around Ruffec has a rich archaeological heritage. For example, the Tusson priory was founded in the 12th century; its monastery was unusually run by a woman and it prospered, resulting in the village being built in the 13th century.
Villefagnan, Nanteuil-en-Vallee and Verteuil en Charente are just a few of the lovely places to visit.
For the more energetic visitor, a wealth of sporting activities can be found. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, cycling and walking trails are widespread and there are man made lakes with childrens' play areas, swimming pools, horse riding and the 'Escalarbre' - an educational, secure tree climbing activity.
