TRAVEL BY RAIL + CAR HIRE
Worried about carbon emissions? Eurostar and Rail Europe will bring you all the way to the Charente. Routes are either via Paris or Lille, with connecting trains to the Charente. (London - Lille requires just a change of train in Paris; London - Paris requires a change of station.) Ruffec is on the SNCF Paris to Spain main line and there is a TGV (fast train) link with Paris daily. As there are more daily trains to both Poitiers and Angouleme, it is best to choose one of these destinations and then drive the final short distance from there.
