The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The area has a long history of royal connections with England and is very popular with Brits. Our climate is generally warmer in the summer, is much more reliable (if setting a day for a barbecue - you can generally be sure of having one) and it's an unusual day when you can't have all of your meals outside. Winters are as cool or even cooler but usually shorter.
The Ruffec / Poursac area
Situated in a quiet rural area with superb access to the UK (via Road, Rail or Air) and ideally placed for such towns as Limoges with its porcelain factories, Poitiers and Angouleme. Cognac and the brewers that are so well known is easily reached and for those who want to the sea - La Rochelle with its own uniquely pleasant weather is just over an hour away. The property is also ideal for anyone needing a base while looking for a house

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Poitiers: 60 km |
| Railway: | Poitiers: 60 km |
| Ferry: | St Malo: 400 km |
Flying - to Poitiers from Stanstead(Ryanair) or Limoges from Stanstead, East Midlands or Liverpool also with Ryanair.
By rail from Waterloo to Poitiers by TGV is a fantastic and relaxing journey - so long as you change at Lille rather than Paris
By Ferry via Calais, Boulogne(Speedferries are very Cheap), Caen(Brittany ferries aren't) or St Malo which is the shortest road trip this side(4+hrs) but usually an overnight boat ride. The A28 Motorway is now open all the way from Calais to Tours and the whole journey can now be driven on Dual carriageway - most of it superb and often empty. From Calais you can expect to need 7 hours and most people will probably prefer a stop overnight

We (2 adults and 11 year old daughter) had a most fantastic week at the gite. Managed to perfection by the owners and their delightful dog, we enjoyed the private pool and the surroundings, both around the gite and the villages nearby. All you need to chill and recharge your batteries is available and you can do as little or much as you like. Plenty of historical visits, Valleey de Signes (Monkey World) where you can spent an entire day and much more. We are definitely contemplating on returning to the gite again in future, there is still so much more to explore in the area. Many thanks to Richard, Patsy and of course Josie to make it a week to remember :o) |

We had a wonderful stay in this excellent gite that is sited in amazing grounds. I doubt the tranquillity could be surpassed in a habited area. I suspect we will be back in the future. Do take detailed maps of the area, or a good sat-nav. We had the latter and found everything we wanted. There are also some really good restaurants within easy reach. |
