Home description
A peaceful setting among the vineyards and sunflowers in the small hamlet of Thezac, near Royan. This recently renovated gite is just 15 minutes from the nearby beach of Royan and also benefits from an 11m * 5m swimming pool set in the large rear gardens. Pomerol has been renovated to a high standard to provide spacious, yet romantic accommodation for couples only. Set on the outskirts of a typical French winemaking village we remain close to all the amenities (restaurants, shops, bakery, pharmacy, tennis, golf etc), and provides a good base for those wishing to enjoy a tranquil holiday whilst remaining close to the mainstream resort of Royan.
The location also provides an excellent base for: - wine tasting in the Bordeaux region (Saint Emilion 1 hour, Pauillac 45 minutes) - visits to the cognac distilleries (35 minutes) - golf at nearby Saintes, Cognac and Royan - fishing, nearby trout fishing lake; sea fishing at Royan - horse riding, several equestrian centres within a short drive - cycling, flat countryside and coastline cycle tracks.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente Maritime enjoys a 'micro-climate' and has the second most hour of sunshine in the whoile of France (2600 hours), second only to the French Riviera.
Charente Maritime, the coastal region of Poitou Charentes, France, has 300 miles of beaches. As you would expect from this region of France, the seafood is sensational, especially the locally harvested oyster beds, and is best washed down with a selection from the cellars of the local vineyards. The Charente Maritime offers a perfect base for not only discovering the coast and beaches, but for cycle tours and walks in the region.
Things to do in Charente Maritime, France
The beaches make taking a holiday rental in Charente Maritime worth it by themselves. However, they are only a tiny fraction of the activities on offer here.
The waters are also perfect for fishing, with sea-bass, sea bream and meagre all available.
Inland, anglers have a wealth of choice. The Charente, Boutonne and Dronne rivers are all available for angling. Following the rivers inland, you discover some areas of incredible natural beauty.
There are national parks including Port des Salines and Cabane de moins encapsulating salt marshes and lagoons.
Places to visit on Holiday in Charente Maritime, France
La Rochelle is a town devoted to the sea. Due to the port, La Rochelle grew into a major town on the French coast, and now has moorings for 3,600 yachts. The town itself is perfect for a leisurely shopping trip for antiques or fashion, and the Saturday market around the historic market place is bustling. La Rochelle also has two main beaches to enjoy during the summer, the Chatelaillon-Plage and St Georges de Didonne, and there is a children’s surf club at Pontaillac.
The town of Rochefort is a charming town renowned for its thalassotherapy centres, and with the café des Longitudes offering home made ice-cream and some of the best fish on this side of the French coast, Rochefort is perfect for a weekend break to fully relax.
Royan / Thezac area
Royan is a lively, modern, year-round resort which is forward-looking, whilst already having about two centuries of history of sea bathing behind it.
The Grande Conche beach is a magnificent area of fine sand which stretches for two kilometres, from the new pier of the yachting marina up to the cliffs of Vallières in the municipality of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne.
The striped tents give the beach a nostalgic air. These tents first appeared a long time ago, when the the fashion for bathing in the sea started at the beginning of the 19th Century.
Today, the sea water treatments are again fashionable but in very different conditions! The thalassotherapy indeed uses techniques much more sophisticated in specialised institutes such as the Cap Royan, in the Chay district.
The tent remains the focal point for families, a beach accessory, which adds a certain charm to the beach of Royan. The hiring of tents is a municipal service with a booking office directly on the beach.
Besides sea bathing and sun bathing, the beach, which is well protected, is the centre of nautical activities such as windsurfing, sailing, …
The walk along La Grande Conche he two kilometre walk along the beach has been adapted for use by both pedestrians and cyclists and is one of the most beautiful on the coast.
Beaches of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer There are four beaches. From the quietest to the more animated, there is a beach to suit everyone in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Everyone can be happy there.
The beach of Nauzan Coming from Royan by driving along the coast, the first beach - straddling Vaux-sur-Mer and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is the beach of Nauzan. Peaceful, sheltered and sunny - "a bathtub" say my friends in Soulac - it welcomes every tourist from 3 months to 80 years old.
It is an ideal place for parents with their young children and grandparents.
The beach of Saint-Palais The beach of Saint-Palais, in the town centre, is more fashionable.
The club offers different activities for the 8, 6 and 12 year old children. The beach has a merry-go-round, puppet theatre, circuses and other entertainment until nightfall. Naturally, you will also find café terraces, pancake shops and ice creams, common to most seaside resorts.
The beach of Le Platin By continuing on the path of the Customs Officers up to the Pont du Diable rocks, you will arrive at the beach of Le Platin, a little bit dangerous for bathing because of its rocks near the surface of the water and more appropriate for sunbathing and for people familiar with the region.
The beach of La Grande Côte For surfing nothing is better than the Grande Côte, an immense beach lined with bunkers from the last war, not aesthetic but classified as historic monuments. The young sportsmen meet at high tide there, whether it is at 6 o'clock in the morning, during the day or at 9 o'clock in the evening. Many lovers of wind and wide open spaces come here as well. One sometimes sees horses galloping (but usually out of season).
Local shopping Shopping. There are no shops in Thezac. However, our next village, (Meursac) which is a 5 minute drive has a very good bakery, a local supermarket, post office, pharmacy and newsagent. Retaud, also a five minute drive, (in the opposite direction), has a local store, post office, bakery, and butcher, (excellent meat!). The nearest large supermarkets are based in Saujon, which is about 10 minutes by car. Here you will find Super U and Intermarche, both of which are very good. Super U is probably the better of the two because it is has its own bakery, cafe, florist, fishmonger and even hairdresser in situ. The major hypermarkets are located in Saintes (LeClerc and Carrefour) and in Royan (LeClerc) but be warned steer clear of LeClerc on Saturdays and Mondays in Royan - is always gridlocked and you could wait an hour getting into the car park! There is a good shopping centre in Saintes, which tends to be very popular on Saturdays, where you can while away the time in a street cafe.
Local Restaurants We have a few local restaurants close by and these are some of our favourites: 'La Table' in Meursac, (5 minutes),is run by a young couple who took over the place about 2 years ago. They both speak some English and we have found them to be very helpful. The food is excellent, reasonably priced and the restaurant setting is very comfortable. L'Auberge de Moulins at Saujon, (10 minutes), is an old watermill which has been converted into a restaurant. The food is excellent and you are guaranteed a warm welcome by the young owners. If you really want to enjoy a gourmet dinner you must visit 'La Foret' near Meschers (20 mins.) you will need to reserve a table though. A 5 course menu costs around 25 euros at the end of which you will be absolutely full up. Le Cottage at Arces sur Gironde, (20 minutes), has become one our latest favourites. A young Irish chef and his French wife provide an excellent menu draft Guinness is also available!
