The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The Charante Maritime is well known for its exceptional sunshine record (over 2,400 hours per year), mild climate and tranquil way of life. The safe beaches of Royan are just 15 minutes away and it is here that you will find shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.
Inland, and life is much slower and relaxed and it is not hard to find medieval villages full of charm, or quaint working ports full of local seafood.
There seems to be an endless list of places to visit and activities for all ages including days out to La Rochelle and Bordeaux. Why not take a wine trip to Cotes de Blaye; use the bac [ferry] from Royan to Le Verdon to visit the Medoc, or travel to the historic St Emillion and tour an estate or two!
For Families, visit the many quiet beaches along the Gironde or on I'le Oleron, or the quick exciting surf on the Côte Sauvage.
How about climbing/clambering between pine trees up to 40ft high it's great fun!
At Jonzac there's Les Antilles for those rainy days [indoor swimming with wave machine etc]

Royan / St Romain de Benet area

Meursac, the local village is less than 3 miles away, has the local bread shop, butchers, co-op, bar-tabac, post office and restaurant. It also has a fabulous out door swimming pool with shute.
Within 10 mins drive is the attractive town of Saujon offering bars, restaurants, range of shops and supermarkets as well as a comprehensive leisure centre with swimming pool and tennis. The monthly market on the first Monday every month.
Places of interest within easy traveling time include:
The local seaside destination of Royan and it’s pretty little sister town of St Georges de Didonne. During summer months numerous cultural events are held in Royan and surrounding towns. Visit the tourism website: www.tourisme.fr/office-de-tourisme/ROYAN
Nearby La Palmyre Zoo is a great day out for all the family
Saintes -visit the Roman Amphitheatre, take a boat trip on the Charente, and take in some great local shops and restaurants
Talmont - a very pretty small town with a 12th century church overlooking the sea
Mornac – an ‘arty’ village with a small port
Brouage - very interesting village full of art and history built on stilts within the salt marshes
La Rochelle - superb walled town with attractive harbour, chic shopping and many open-air restaurants
Ile d'Oleron – having both wonderfully quiet and exhilarating beaches with Atlantic breakers
Cognac - visit the brandy distilleries of Martel, Courvoisier and Hine.
And there's much much more....just ask!
