The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
This area is well known for its exceptional sunshine record (over 2400 hours per year), mild climate and tranquil way of life. The area has a charm of its own and you will be met by big skies and a clarity of light which is much appreciated by artists. The safe beaches of fashionable Royan are 20 minutes away and it is here that you will find shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Inland, and life is much slower and relaxed and it is not hard to find medieval villages full of charm.
Other places of interest within easy travelling time include: Saintes(to see the Roman Amphitheatre and take a boat trip on the Charente); Talmont (a very pretty small town with a 12th century church overlooking the sea); Mornac (another very pretty village with a small port); La Rochelle (a suberb walled town with a very attractive harbour and many open- air restaurants. See http://www.ville-larochelle.fr/english/index.php); Ile d'Oleron (wonderful beaches and Atlantic breakers); Ile de Re (very attractive harbours and open air eating in St. Martin and la Flotte); Cognac (visit the brandy distilleries of Martel, Courvoisier and Hine. See www.ville-cognac.fr)
Royan / Le Gua area
The village of le Gua is within walking distance and provides for everyday needs (small supermarket, bakers, butchers, charcuterie, fishshop, pharmacy, tabac, bars and restaurants). A small market is held on Sunday. An excellent 3* restaurant is within easy walking distance from the house as is a wine shop selling pineau and a range of wines and gifts. The nearest large supermarket, open on Sunday is approx. 10km.
The attractive small town of Saujon offers a shopping centre (bars, restaurants, and range of shops/ supermarkets) as well as a comprehensive leisure centre with swimming pool and tennis. The monthly market is a real event and worth visiting if you are here on the first Monday of the month.
15km away is the fashionable, bustling resort of Royan with its sandy beaches and abundance of cafes, restaurants and bars along the seafront. The nearest beach, Le Chay is very safe for swimming and is supervised during summer months. A market is held every day and the Sunday market is well worth a visit.
During summer months numerous cultural events are held in Royan and surrounding towns. Visit the tourism website: www.tourisme.fr/office-de-tourisme/ROYAN
