Near the foot of the Royal Mile, the historic thoroughfare which links Edinburgh Castle at the top with the Royal palace of Holyrood at the bottom, lie the gardens of Dunbars Close. Twenty paces from the street with its bustling groups of tourists walking by, there is a tranquil and little-known public space, which has been reconstructed in the style of a 17th century formal garden.

The Secret Garden Apartment is a small, recently refurbished holiday flat available for short-term let (2-31 days). Set in a typical 19th Century stone tenement, this stylish and comfortable apartment is on the 3rd floor with the windows of the sitting room looking out onto the Royal Mile. There are views from the quiet back bedroom over Dunbar's Close Gardens and the adjacent Canongate Kirk yard (the Queen's church when she is in residence at Holyrood Palace which is literally 3 or 4 minutes' walk down the hill) and on to Calton Hill with its iconic Edinburgh monuments.

For visitors on a city break, all the museums, galleries, monuments and shops of Edinburgh's historic old town are within walking distance. There are plenty of nearby cafes and restaurants including a Starbucks just across the road. For those who also enjoy the outdoors, the 650 acre Holyrood Park which encloses the 823 foot high granite outcrop of Arthurs Seat, lies about 5 minutes' walk away. The University of Edinburgh's central campus at George Square is only 10 minutes' walk and the Holyrood (Education School) campus is across the road.

The apartment was totally renovated in April 2011 to a high standard of finish. Whlst we wanted a modern looking decor we were keen to retain a comfortable home-from-home feel for our visitors. The sitting room faces south, with two large windows overlooking the Royal Mile. This bright, comfortable room contains a modern, well equipped kitchen at one end. The room also contains a dining table and sofa, allowing meal times to be a relaxed, social affair. The sofa converts to a cosy double bed if more than two guests are staying.

There is a beautiful, modern bathroom in warm, earthy coloured tiles and underfloor heating. It has a bath with shower over.

The quiet double bedroom at the rear of the property overlooks the tranquil Dunbars Close Gardens and has views to the historic monuments of Calton Hill.

All electricity, gas, linen and towels are included in the booking price. As well as free WiFi internet access, there is a laptop in the apartment for use by guests

The apartment is adjacent to the Dunbar;s Close public garden which is a reconstruction of a 17th century formal garden typical of that found behind the properties on the Canongate in that era.

The Edinburgh region

The ancient capital city of Scotland and the seat of its Parliament, Edinburgh has a rich and diverse character, landscape and architecture. With its cobbled streets, historic buildings, elegant squares and gardens and world-class galleries and museums, it is a city easy to fall in love with.

A cosmopolitan city, with first-class shops, restaurants and clubs, Edinburgh is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, a City of Literature and home to the largest arts festivals in the world every summer.

Surprisingly close to Edinburgh's busy centre and within 2 minutes' stroll from the apartment, peace and quiet can be found in Holyrood Park, a vast area of wide open space, small glens and lochs. A walk up Arthur's Seat (250m), an extinct volcano in the park, provides spectacular views of the city. Holyrood Palace and the new Scottish Parliament Building can also be found with a couple of minutes' walk from the apartment and the castle is at the other end of the Royal Mile.

Royal Mile

The apartment is situated right on the Royal Mile which was recently voted Scotland's most romantic street. It is also a beautiful, historic and interesting place where you will find plenty to do and see to fill the days and nights of your visit. The area is best visited on foot but public transport is good and the ever-present taxis will gladly pick you up and direct you, if you are looking for somewhere in particular.

The city is very safe with low crime risks, but the weather is an ever-present threat. Windy and wet is not uncommon, and the city and citizens are prepared for this! If you are blessed with good weather it is an added treat. Wikipedia is a good place to look, for lots of historical information about Edinburgh with plenty of links to websites of special interest and photos.

Please be aware that Edinburgh is very busy in August when the Festivals are running and accommodation, tour and restaurant booking can be a challenge at that time.

"The Secret Garden Apartment Is A Lovely Gem!"

The Secret Garden was perfect for our family of three's one week stay in Edinburgh.
It is conveniently located, attractive, very comfortable, and has heart.
It is clear that Sandra has put much thought into every detail, and that makes the stay in The Secret Garden Apartment just lovely. From the books on the shelves, the travel guides, the custom notebook with all the details about the flat, to the welcome basket of goodies and the espresso maker, everything was just right.

The views are fantastic---The Royal Mile out the living room & kitchen windows, and The Secret Garden and Calton Hill out the bedroom window.
The bed is super comfortable, and the bedroom is really pretty, with just enough storage space for our stay. We slept quite well every night.
Having an espresso machine was such a treat, and the kitchen was very well stocked for all the cooking we did while we were there. The grocery is just a quick walk, so we didn't need to eat out, though we chose to now & then.
The adjacent living room is comfortable and is the perfect size for the time we hung around the flat.
The bathroom is just great (like a spa, really) with its heated floor, towel bar, ample lighting & shelf space.
Having a washer and dryer on site was very convenient, too, as we travel fairly lightly and needed to run a load mid-week.

We very much appreciate that this is located just far enough down the Royal Mile so that it was quieter at night, while still being very close to what we wanted to do & see, including the bus line and train station, too.

This is an excellent flat for people who want to be in Edinburgh and have a more local "real" experience than a hotel could provide. We felt like we lived there, we loved every minute of it, (really!) and are already talking about when we might return for another visit.
The Secret Garden Apartment is truly a gem, and we couldn't recommend it more!

"The Perfect Place to Stay!!"

We stayed at The Secret Garden over Hogmany 2013. What a Fantastic welcome from Sandra and hubby, who turned into the porter for us and very kindly carried up a typical women's suitcase!!
We could not have stayed in a better location. The flat is bigger than the photos show it is also very warm and the underfloor heating in the bathroom was a joy for the feet!! It has a great shower no loss off pressure and the water is so soft I wish I could have bottled it up for my shower's at home!!
It was great to stay in an apartment that had a full sized fridge freezer. The bed was very comfortable as was the sofa bed.
I can not recommend this flat enough it is on the door step for all that Edinburgh can offer in the New, Old town and beyond.
We will be back and we will be recommending to family and friend's.

"Great location, lovely little one bed flat"

The Secret Garden is a one bedroom flat in a terrific location next to Canongate Kirk and backing on to the graveyard - great views from the 4th floor too. It has everything you need in a one bed apartment. The bedroom is small but we were there for the Festival and this was not a problem. The lounge/kitchen/diner looks onto Canongate and is really comfortable and cosy.

A washing machine is a available on a mezzanine if you're staying for a while.

Sandra is very approachable and happy to provide any help you need (though Edinburgh is easy enough to negotiate).

Booking is straightforward and the flat is good value.

It's perfect for the Festival but please don't book then - we want to!

"Excellent home from home"

I can't recommend the apartment enough although I'm reluctant to recommend in case it is fully booked the next time I try to stay! It's well-stocked, smartly decorated, in a brilliant location and convenient in every way. You can tell a lot of thought and care has gone into ensuring it meets and exceeds expectations. I now treat it as a home-from-home whenever I need to stay in Edinburgh be it for a wedding, work or leisure. All round big thumbs up. I should also add that the owner is very kind and easy to communicate with which makes it all the more of a pleasure to stay.

"A wonderful find in central Edinburgh!"

A superb apartment in a wonderful location which couldn't have suited us better for our week at the Edinburgh Festival in August. Its location on the Royal Mile meant we could walk everywhere on the Fringe circuit in a short space of time and it was very convenient for popping back for lunch or siesta when the festival took its toll!
The apartment was very comfortably furnished and had everything we needed including a lovely bottle of bubbly and oatcakes and biscuits! The views were lovely from the bedroom window and it was fun looking onto the Royal Mile to people watch! It was surprisingly quiet throughout our stay and we appreciated the extras such as the dishwasher and washing machine.
The booking process was very straightforward and Sandra the owner always responded promptly and helpfully. She very kindly let us store our luggage after our very early morning flight and allowed us to use the apartment as soon as it had been cleaned from previous guests. She gave us many tips to help us enjoy our stay and clearly takes pride in providing a first class service.
I cannot recommend this apartment highly enough and we will definitely return.
