The Istria region
Situated in the direct proximity of the Western European civilization on one side and on the border of a different cultural milieu on the other, Istria has an enviable history, written at the crossroads of three large European cultures- Slavic, Roman, and German. Millennial political claims, incessant tensions, and the division of this small area among various states and political influences of dominant European powers decisively influenced the specificity of life and variety of cultural influences on the Istrian peninsula. Through the peninsula, since the ancient times, roads went from the Mediterranean to mid-Europe, or the area of Pannonia and the other way round. Through the tumultuous Istrian history, we mark frequent changes of rulers - from the Roman Empire and Byzantium, through the Frank State, the Aquileian Patriarchy, Venetian Republic, the Pazin County, Illyric Provinces, Austria, Italy, to Yugoslavia. On this turbulent area, historic events were caused by frequent migrations and refugees, which also causes the changes of population, traditions, and cultures. Numerous nations left their traces in this area: the Liburni, the Histri (after whom the peninsula was named), the Greeks, the Celts, the Romans, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Langobards, the Croats, the Franks, the Venetians, the Austrians, the Italians ...

Guestbook for HANSEL Apartments
"Just wanted to thank Selma and her Hansel Apartments in Rovinj, where we just passed a fantastic holiday. Her hospitality and advice were very welcome, the apartment was great, very comfortable and Rovinj and the surrounding area very beautiful. It all added up to an unforgetable holiday, and we can't wait to get back..." - Mr C. Buckley, Ireland
"This was our first trip to Croatia and we found Hansel Apartments from our own research on the Internet, contacted the proprietor via email, who was most helpful and kept us up-to-date. On our arrival Selma was there to meet us and made us very welcome, she gave us local knowledge and recommended places to visit and eat in Rovinj. Selma was always at the end of the phone if we needed her, which was reassuring. The apartment is modern, comfortable, clean and well appointed. The location is perfect in a residential area, close to a supermarket, within easy walking distance of the beach in one direction and Rovinj centre in the other. It was not necessary to hire a car, and taxis were readily available and reasonably priced. Our only disappointment on this trip was that we were not staying longer!!! We enjoyed our stay so much we are returning again this June. It is a very special occasion for us as on our return we are getting married and wanted to spend the week before in a relaxing and special place!" - Julie and Steve, UK
"Hi Selma, We had a wonderful three weeks in your apartment. May was the best for our holiday in Rovinj. We went swimming in the sea, had breakfast outside in the little street cafés near the harbour, did lots of walking and riding on our bikes as it wasn't yet too hot. Just the right time and place for perfect relaxing. And the last but not least we enjoyed a comfortable home in your apartment and the care you gave us. Thanks a lot for the hearty welcome." - Bea and Reiner, Germany
