About this location

The Istria region

Istria is the north westernmost region of Croatia - a peninsula which lies opposite Venice across the Gulf of Trieste, bordering Slovenia.

Istria is the new Tuscany according to a number of travel writers and visitors in the know.

Driving down through the heart of inland Istria, it is easy to see why. Italian is the official second language here and both the architecture and countryside very much resemble Tuscany. Here you will be welcomed by a landscape of rolling vineyards, olive trees and walled hilltop towns such as Grožnjan and Motovun. Their mazy cobbled streets, wonderful medieval architecture, art galleries, film and music festivals make for excellent day trips from Rovinj. Also worth visiting are the abandoned hilltop town of Dvigrad and the underground lakes at the Baredine Caves, near Porec.

Istria can also boast a growing gastronomic reputation, particularly for truffles, wine and olives. The tourist association has organised gastro routes so you can seek out the best producers.

The coastline of the Istrian peninsula features pretty fishing towns, pebbled beaches and coves along the clear blue Adriatic Sea. Just north of Rovinj, there is the Lim Fjord –a tree lined fjord, famed for oysters and historically pirates, just a 15 minute drive from Rovinj, or a leisurely sail by organized boat trips. Also worth visiting are Pula, the regional capital, for its amazingly preserved 1st century AD Roman Amphitheatre and monuments and Porec old town with its 6th century Basilica of Euphrasius (UNESCO World Heritage site). The Brijuni Islands National Park (formerly the summer residence of General Tito) are accessible by boat from Fažana and have a safari park and golf course.

Istria has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and long, hot summers. The temperature in Rovinj averages 23 degrees C and benefits from the refreshing Maestral breeze that blows in off the sea. The sea temperature averages around 24 degrees C in the summer and it is possible to swim in the sea from April to October.

Rovinj is a beautiful and relaxed town with a population of around 15,000. With St. Euphemia church as its focal point, the town is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets, squares, small churches and old Baroque and Renaissance Palaces. An island until the 18th century (when the peninsula was joined to the mainland), Rovinj owes much of its charming present day appearance and character to its Venetian rule between the 12th and 17th centuries.

The location of Casa Geranium in the heart of the old town of Rovinj, means that not only are you close to the many sights, but you are actually staying in the main attraction itself – the old town! Enjoy getting "lost" in the cobbled streets, exploring and making new discoveries as you take in the Venetian architecture.

Visit the Museum of Rovinj, Church of St. Euphemia, the museum of the Batana boat unique to Rovinj, the town’s aquarium and thriving art galleries. Photo and painting opportunities are everywhere including the sunsets over the harbour and end of the peninsula, the old town’s streets, the fishermen hauling in their morning catch or mending their nets, dusk in the old town and the panoramic views of Rovinj from the top of St. Euphemia’s church tower.

Try taking a boat trip to one of Rovinj’s many islands, fishing in the sea, or taking a fish picnic down the Lim Fjord. For the more energetic types, there is swimming, diving, rock climbing, watersports, tennis, table tennis, karting, rowing, running, paintballing, cycling, and for those with a head for heights, climbing the steps to the top of the tower of St. Euphemia church. After that, chill out in the clear blue sea or sunbathe in a hammock under the shady pine trees of Rovinj's natural park, Zlatni Rt.

With well over 30 restaurants and 30 cafés / bars in the old town, you won't go hungry or thirsty! Enjoy freshly caught fish, sample local Istrian specialities such as pršut (Croatian prosciutto / wind dried ham), sheep’s cheese and olives or the many Italian dishes available (such as the wood-fired pizzas, pasta and risotto). Don’t forget to try one of the many flavours of wonderful ice cream, or relax with a coffee and cake at a pavement café bar. Or take your pick at Rovinj’s daily fruit & vegetable market, and adjacent indoor fish market.

To complete your day, how about chilling out at one of the harbourside bars, tasting the local Istrian wines, spirits, and beers or sipping cocktails watching the sun set along the peninsula?

Further afield, do not miss a visit to Pula to see the Roman Amphitheatre and historic monuments, the Basilica of Porec, or take a day trip by boat to Venice (around 3 hours one way). With a little more time, the incomparable Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO World Heritage Site) are within a 3-4 hour drive with their interlinked turquoise blue lakes and waterfalls.

There are a number of open-air events in Rovinj over the summer, with the highlight being Rovinj week in early August. Also popular are the Fishermen’s Nights where you can enjoy a barbeque, live music and dance in the main square. Throughout the year, there are also many jazz, classical, and traditional Istrian folk music concerts, art fairs, theatrical and dance performances. Cycle tours, rowing and sailing regattas also often stop off at Rovinj.

"fabulous apartment in a beautiful resort"

This apartment is in the heart of the old town. It is found at the top of a steep staircase so would definitely not be suitable for very elderly or infirm. Once there it is certainly worth the climb. … More

"Great apartment, beautiful place!"

The apartment was perfectly located in the centre of the old town and was to a lovely high standard.

The town was stunning and still untouched with beautiful nature reserves and traditional houses and resturants.

Highly recommended!

"Lovely apartment in a brilliant location in beautiful Rovinj"

Sarah and Andrew Bennett have put a great deal of thought into their property in Rovinj, and as a result you will be very comfortable. Located in a picturesque and characteristic courtyard, in the centre of Rovinj old town, the apartment provides an excellent base for exploring the locale.

Rovinj itself is delightful - lots of beautiful views and an easy place to spend a week or two relaxing and enjoying the sun and sea. The day trip to Venice is well worth while too.

Croatia is no longer as cheap as we expected, so while the food was good, self-catering will help the pennies go further!

"A lovely apartment in a lovely location - recommended!"

A lovely apartment, and great communication and service from both the owner and the local agent. Despite a late (delayed) arrival we were met with a cheerful smile and given good directions to the apartment. Many thanks for the wine - very welcome!
Lovely comfortable beds, and a well equipped and clean kitchen. We kept very fit by climbing the stairs to the apartment every day!
The area is quiet and felt very safe, recommended for families with older children as the stairs would be a nightmare with younger children.

"Great location; Very good value; Spacious; Attractively furnished."

This was our 2nd visit to this apartment, so obviously we like the place. I chose Rovinj for my 60th birthday celebration. I rented 3 apartments, this one was the best. Andrew arranged to have flowers, wine, chocolate, shower gel and card to welcome me.
For my "birthday" meal we went back to' Monte' which serves fantastic food. I will be back to this apartment, others would be advised to follow. Only one negative; if you have trouble with unusually steep stairs this is not the place for you, but it does add to the atmosphere of staying in a medieval town.

"Home away from home!"

We had a fabulous time in Rovinj! This apartment made our stay so comfortable. Located right in the center of the beautiful medieval town, it was just perfect. We enjoyed everything about the town and the apartment. We highly recommend a visit to the charming town of Rovinj, and we would absolutely stay here again! The apartment was very spacious, and had everything you need. Traveling with our 5-year old, it was like being home away from home.
