The West Country / Devon region

Famous for being one of England’s finest destinations, Devon has everything you need for a perfect seaside cottage holiday.
You can relax and unwind in its unspoilt, idyllic beauty and enjoy adventuring and learning about its vibrant history. From lush green rolling hills and countryside lanes, stunning beaches, Jurassic Coast to picture postcard villages, Cream teas to fine dining, Devon charms its visitors with its sense of the timelessness and elegance.
The fabulous coastline, stretching from Seaton to Plymouth is the main draw for holiday makers. There are fabulous beaches, mysterious estuaries, rugged cliffs and stunning sandy coves to explore, as well as the famous English Riviera. Taking in the resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, the Devonshire coast offers all the facilities you need for a great seaside cottage holiday.
Inland, you can get away from it all and visit Dartmoor National Park or just enjoy the rolling hills and rural delights of the South Devon countryside – we bet you didn’t know that Devon’s landscape is so special, that over half of it has been protected. Make sure you visit Exeter, the capital of the region, its cathedral – The 850-year-old Cathedral is a superb architectural masterpiece – cobbled streets and wide selection of shops make for a splendid day out, or else you can take a trip back in time to the Elizabethan age in Totnes with its charming Tudor houses and Castle which has one of the best examples of a Norman motte and bailey.
Holiday in Devon and you’ll discover that the region is studded with many stately homes, historic houses and splendid castles and cathedrals, where you can soak up historic tales of long ago. Plymouth and Dartmouth have a strong maritime history, and Buckland Abbey is home to Sir Francis Drake’s famous drum. You can explore the myths and legends of old at ancient sites, or enjoy the favourite views of more modern legends Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or explore the romantic ruins of Okehampton Castle you can walk in the footsteps of medieval princes.
Devon’s lush, green pastures, rich arable land and dramatic coastal waters provide some of England’s finest fresh local produce, and a cottage holiday is a delight for food lovers. Come in October and indulge in a gastronomic event such as the Devon Festival of Food. Or browse farmers markets at Widecombe-on-the-Moor and Bovey Tracey at any time of the year. You could treat yourself and your taste buds by dining out in style at one of the region’s many delightful restaurants, including the Michelin starred Gidleigh Park Hotel.
For those who enjoy a spot of culture, our range of holiday cottages make the perfect base for enjoying Devon’s vibrant and lively creative arts scene. The Exeter Festival in July is a must, while jazz fans flock to the Teignmouth Jazz Festival in November. The culture scene in Devon is superb at any time of year.
For a cottage holiday full of family days out, Devon has no shortage of attractions: Dartington Crystal, Exmoor or Paignton Zoo, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, The Gnome Reserve and Wild Flower Garden at Holsworthy, the cobbled streets of Clovelly, a trip to Lund Island, Kents Caverns, railways, farms and wildlife parks, or, of course, a good old fashioned day on the beach, to name but a few!
So as you can see, young or just young at heart, whether you’re seeking the peace and serenity of rugged, beautiful Dartmoor and Exmoor or beachcombing along wide open beaches such as Woolacombe our Devonshire holiday cottages are set amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery in England and make for a perfect cottage holiday desitination.
The Rousdon area
The beautiful 350 acre Rousdon Estate is located in a magnificent clifftop setting on the Dorset/Devon “Jurassic coast”, complete with private beach. Rousdon is perfectly positioned to explore the best Dorset and Devon have to offer.
The Jurassic coastline here forms part of a 95 mile stretch awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO for its outstanding geology and is ranked alongside the Grand Canyon and Great Barrier Reef as one of the natural wonders of the world.
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the border where Dorset meets Devon with a magnificent Tudor style grade II listed Mansion House at its centre, this parkland estate is the perfect destination for a relaxed holiday in the heart of the Jurassic Coast.
The estate benefits from having its own private beach at Charton Bay which is accessed by a steep coastal path and surrounded by steep cliffs to give a perfect seclusion to allow you to relax and watch the sea lapping at the shore and to breath in the exhilarating sea air.
Nearby Lyme Regis has a rich and colourful history and is just a couple of miles away. Its narrow tangle of streets and shops wind their way down to the famous 13th century Cobb harbour and sandy beach. The town was famously depicted in the film, The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Here you can take a fossil hunting walk and discover the fossilised remains of giant ichthyosaur, plesiosaur, belemnites and ammonites that can be found on the beach. This famous seaside town has won the accolade of ‘the Pearl of the Dorset’.
