Home description
Welcome to Les Hirondelles. After years of big family holidays abroad in a range of Gites around France we made a decision to create our own ‘French experience’ and in 2004 bought a mere shell of a Farmhouse which we have painstakingly transformed into this spacious and extremely well-equipped holiday house which suits us down to the ground as we hope it will you.
An extremely well equipped, self-catering French farmhouse in tranquil location with private pool and large terrace for al fresco living. The large, partially covered terrace is perfect for long relaxing lunches as the children play in the garden and pool. A perfect place for families and friends seeking relaxation. Ideally located for cycling, walking and exploring the Charente.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente department is home to over 340,000 inhabitants and is located in the south-east of Poitou-Charentes. The countryside offers a unique and varied environment for walkers and mountain bikers from rolling hills in the east to a flatter landscape in the west. The northern area is wild with deep forests and peaks reaching to over 1000ft.
The Charente has long relied on agriculture to fuel its economy. In the 18th Century, however, the department started mass producing its famous Cognac drink, which proved extremely popular with people from all over the world.
The department has great roads down to the Charente and the Channel ports just a day's drive away. The department has access to Poitiers, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Bergerac and Limoges airports, all within 2 hours. Furthermore, in the centre of the department you will be able to fly from either Gatwick or Stansted direct to the Angouleme Cognac airport .
Angouleme is a small yet cosmopolitan city. It hosts a lot of events such as its vintage car racing (the Circuit des Remparts) which takes place in September, the cartoon festival in January and a great music scene which just seems to get better every year. Both Cognac and Confolens have annual festivals which attract tourists to the area.
The Charente has an immensely varied countryside bordering 5 departments, famous for both its Cognac vineyards in the west, and its Limousin beef production in the east, which in terms of scenery are worlds apart. The valley of the Charente River meanders down from Ruffec in the north through Angouleme on to Jarnac and Cognac.
Rouillac / Bonneville area
Rouillac is a traditional "market town" with all the amenities that one would require such as two large supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacy, doctors and a large outdoor seasonal pool. Rouillac is only 10 minutes away by car and hosts one of the biggest street markets in the region on the 27th of every month, a true spectacle.
Nearby is the village of Gourville which has a baker, two bar/cafes and a post office/general store . Patreville is a quiet village - perfectly situated for exploring the countryside.
Horse riding is available at nearby Bouchards and all standards are catered for. This is also the site of the remains of one of Europe's largest Roman amphitheatres which in the summer months is occasionally used as an outdoor theatre.
The cosmopolitan beach resort of "La Rochelle" is 90 minutes drive away, with "Royan" even closer. The rampart city of "Angouleme" is only a 20 minute drive, with its rich social calendar. There are plenty of restaurants/cafes to be found amongst the winding cobbled streets. Just outside Angouleme is 'Nautilus' waterpark - a must for the children.
The beautiful town of "Cognac" is only 20 minutes away and well worth a visit and a trip on the river Charente is recommended.
How to get there
Angouleme airport offers regular flights from Stansted and is approximately 30 minutes drive to the property.
Angouleme train station is approx. 30 minutes from the house.
Poitiers airport is approximately an hour and a half’s drive away.
The journey time from Calais is 7 hours and we would be happy to recommend good stop-over places and service stations with the best facilities.
Car rental companies are located at all airports.
