The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc region is extremely varied, offering Mediterranean beaches, mountains, historic sites and a vast selection of holiday activities. It is therefore no surprise that it is one of the most popular regions in France for tourists. Yet, unlike some other areas, it is easy to get away from the crowds and find a tranquil spot in the beautiful countryside.
Vineyards have been a major feature of the area since Roman times. Meeting some of the local producers and tasting their wines is a very popular pastime for visitors to the region. The markets abound with fresh local produce such as olives and cheeses together with vast arrays of fresh fruit and vegetables. The Mediterranean and many local rivers produce a wide range of seafood and fish, whilst meat eaters can enjoy local specialities such as cassoulet and confit of duck.
Wherever you go in the Languedoc you are surrounded by the vestiges of history. In particular, you can follow the Cathar trail and visit the medieval sites where the Cathars lived and took refuge from the crusaders, often in mountain-top retreats such as Montségur and Lastours. A visit to the fortified city of Carcassonne, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is highly recommended.
The Aude area enjoys a Mediterranean climate: the summers are hot and dry (although the high temperatures are frequently tempered by welcome breezes), the spring and autumn are mild and generally very pleasant. Winters are short and there is little snow (apart from in higher areas).
This lovely village has much to offer the visitor.
The Fourchette Folle restaurant in the heart of the village offers a sunny terrace and an indoor seating area.
There is a mini supermarket which also doubles as a restaurant throughout the holiday season. As an added bonus it offers take-away pizzas all year round.
The neighbouring canal-side villages of Argens Minervois, Paraza and Homps also have a good selection of restaurants.
For those who enjoy wine, Roubia is at the centre of the Minervois and Corbières areas. There are several wine producers in the village who offer opportunities for wine-tasting.
Locally grown fruit, vegetables and eggs can be bought at a farm shop a two minute stroll from the property.
Also a short walk away is an olive farm where you can stock up on olive oil.
Roubia is located beside the Canal du Midi (a World Heritage Site), ideal for walking or cycling. Boats can be hired from the nearby villages of Argens Minervois or Homps.
Bicycle hire is available in the neighbouring village of Paraza (bikes can be delivered directly to the house)
In nearby Homps (10 minutes drive) there is a lake for swimming and water sports. The adjoining beach is perfect for picnics.
In the village itself there is a large boulodrome (very popular weekly competitions are held there throughout the summer), whilst tennis is available in the neighbouring village of Argens Minervois.
For golfers, there are a number of excellent golf courses in the area. The nearest is at Carcassonne ( 40 minutes) and others nearby include Béziers and St. Cyprien.
The sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are within easy reach (for example the resorts of Narbonne and Gruissan are 40 minutes away) and canoeing is available on the river Aude.
The large safari park at Sigean (open all year) offers an enjoyable day out for all ages.
For those who prefer the scenery and tranquillity of mountains Roubia is also well placed for exploring the Montagne Noire and the Cévennes to the north and the Pyrenees to the south (where a ride on the Petit Train Jaune enables you to admire the spectacular views ).
Should you wish to travel a little further, the excellent motorways in the area enable you to reach the Spanish border in 1¼ hours.

"La Maison Clairette provided everything we hoped for whilst on holiday in a beautiful French setting."
We have just returned from a one week stay at La Maison Clairette, Roubia, and would have happily stayed longer.
The villa was very clean throughout and really well equipped making self catering easy and enjoyable. The kitchen was thoughtfully set up with plenty of utensils, cutlery and crockery and there are also two bbqs available. A collection of books/maps and information leaflets are a helpful addition giving details of regional interest and for planning trips. Three of the four bedrooms and the open plan living accommodation have doors opening onto the lovely paved patio area leading to the swimming pool so when we weren't out sight seeing it was delightful to relax around the villa and in the garden by the pool.
The setting of the villa is lovely. A few minutes walk from the centre of the unspoilt village where you can buy fresh bread and croissants for breakfast or visit one of the local restaurants. (Homps nearby also has a selection of great restaurants.) The village is surrounded by vineyards and olive trees and is on the banks of the Canal du Midi where you can watch the boats go by or cycle along the tow path to the neighbouring villages.
There are plenty of excellent places to visit, many of historic interest. We enjoyed the Cathar castle of Lastours and visits to Minerve and Bages. It was a treat to visit the weekly market at Olonzac and stock up with local fruit and veg from the colourful stalls. Visiting the beach and marina at Gruissan added to the variety of activities within easy reach.
We had a wonderful holiday and hope to return again next year.

"A place to relax and enjoy the Languedoc"
Our stay in La Maison Clairette enabled us to enjoy the pleasures of rural France in a winegrowing area with wine tasting on the doorstep at the winery of Pique-Perlou. A Market Garden is a short walk away across a vineyard with local produce for sale. We enjoyed walking along the towpath of the Canal du Midi with motor cruisers passing by and the pub/restaurant and village shop close at hand. Overall our stay in this comfortable and well equipped villa was a great success and the modern facilities and fittings suited us well.
