Rottingdean is known as an ancient Smuggler's Village and is also known as the home of Rudyard Kipling who wrote many of his books here. Burne-Jones the painter lived here and also Edith Bagnold the writer of The National Velvet. The sea is on our doorstep and In this part of southern England there are many castles, gardens and stately homes to visit as well as the beautiful South Downs. In a matter of minutes you can enjoy the delights of the cosmopolitan City of Brighton & Hove. The ancient County town of Lewes is about a 20 minute drive and the sunny seaside resort of Eastbourne is a 45 minute car ride away. All these places including the very long beach at nearby Seaford and Newhaven(with ferries to France) can be reached by a regular bus services as well as by car. Rottingdean areaRottingdean has an annual Village Fayre on the first Saturday in August. Nearby Brighton hosts a large Arts Festival during May as well as many other events during the year and has an excellent theatre. Rottingdean has a large beach for summer sea bathing and also a long undercliff walk into Brighton or east towards Saltdean. There are also a number of country walks nearby including the 'Windmill Walk' on Beacon Hill.
