Central Rotorua Activities

Rotorua is host to almost two million visitors per year and is known for its geothermal activity, bubbling mud pools, geysers and thermal springs. It is also the ancestral home of the Arawa tribe, and associated Maori cultural activities which are available to the visiting public.

Numerous lake walks, with durations from half an hour to a full day are within a 30 minute drive, but by travelling a little further there are some wonderful full day river and bush walks. All offer exceptional scenery amongst native bush, few people, and are well marked.

Other attractions include the world famous Agrodome, Hangi (Maori feast), trout springs, bungi jumps, horse treks, sky diving, river rafting and a luge. In fact, Rotorua has everything one would expect to find in New Zealand, with the exception of snow.

Personally escorted tours for sightseeing, shopping and bushwalking can be arranged. Further information on Rotorua is available on the official website www.rotoruanz.co.nz

Local Activities

Rainbow Trout Lodge is situated on State Highway 30, approximately 35 minutes from Rotorua central, 25 minutes from Rotorua Airport; 45 minutes from Whakatane; and 50 minutes from Tauranga . The Lodge is nestled on the shores of Lake Rotoehu, one of a cluster of 16 lakes in the area. It is where, in 1823, Hongi Hika and his warriors paddled and dragged their canoes to fight the Arawa people on Lake Rotorua. A delightful, short 45 minute walk through Hongi's Track, amongst native bush, replicating part of the journey, is a few minutes drive from the Lodge.

Charles P.T. Royal a local Maori man who was the New Zealand Innovative Chef of the Year 2003; Winner of the New Zealabd Cusine Magazine & Matua Valley wines Award winner for innovation and Excellence 2004-2006 is available for guided bush walks locally with Maori lunches and guided Maori food tours.

Hinehopu Golf Club, is a four minute drive from your Lodge and is available to green fee players. It is a delightful country course surrounded by magnificent bush and high bluffs.

Waitangi Soda Springs is a totally natural, well developed yet simple thermal spring with onsite local Iwi management by Chiefie and Joanne which is a minutes' drive from the Lodge. The water has wonderful therapeutic qualities and is regularly used by locals and visitors.

Whakatane township, situated on the East Coast is a 45 minute drive from Rainbow Trout Lodge, and is a delightful day trip offering miles of sandy beaches and some of the finest salt water fishing in New Zealand. It is renowned for it's Yellow fin Tuna and Marlin fishing during the summer months with excellent catches of Snapper and Terakihi both excellent white fleshed eating fish.

White Island is an active volcano thirty miles off the East Coast of New Zealand. Helicopter flights operate scheduled daily services to the Island from Rotorua.
