About the home

The pretty village of Thropton in Northumberland was known locally as the 'tattie town' as it used to be a centre for buying and selling potatoes. Today it is a much loved holiday village and popular stopping off point on route to exploring the rolling hills abutting the meandering Coquet Valley. Built during the early 1920s Hill Top Cottage is located on the outskirts of Thropton Village and, as the name suggests, occupies an idyllic position up a quiet country lane affording amazing views over the valley. It is a picture-postcard holiday property enjoying a stunning rural setting. The perfect location to enjoy a peaceful and well-earned holiday. The cottage has two bedrooms and can accommodate up to four guests. The property's practical open plan layout enhances the charm and character within and gives added prominence to the feature wood-burning stove set within large inglenook style fireplace. If the weather turns for the worst guests can enjoy the stunning views while curled up with a good book in front of the stove. During fine weather guests can enjoy the sunshine or indulge in a spot of Al Fresco dining from the enclosed front and rear gardens.

The Northern England / Northumberland region

The northerly county of Northumberland is a hidden gem of totally unspoilt countryside and wonderful long stretches of pristine sandy beaches.
If you want to stretch your legs and breathe in clean country air this is the place for you, with miles of wide open spaces and magnificent views. The county has three distinct sub regions; a coastline stretching some forty miles with quiet sandy beaches and pretty coastal harbour villages. Inland visitors will find dramatic rolling moorland and forests, much of which is National Park and to the south of the region is the famous Hadrian's Wall which runs coast to coast and is now a World Heritage Site.
Apart from Northumberland's natural assets the county is steeped in history and has had a turbulent past which is characterised by more than its fair share of castles and ancient hill forts, some of which were built to repel Viking invaders. It was also the scene of the border wars and conflicts between the English and Scots in the 14th-16th century

The Rothbury / Thropton area

Thropton Village itself has a garage and a shop area selling local produce. There are also two pubs in the village selling food. There are some lovely walks direct from the village leading for example, to the nearby River Coquet or over the hills to the popular market town of Rothbury. The latter is two miles to the east by road andt has an excellent range of facilities including a swimming pool and golf course. Half a mile further on will bring visitors to Cragside. This was the former home of the great Victorian industrialist, Lord Armstrong, and the first property in the whole country to be powered by electricity. It is now under the care of the National Trust and is highly recommended for a day trip. Travelling even further east will bring visitors to Alnwick with its stunning, medieval castle and townscape. Somewhat more recently constructed but every bit as popular is the award winning Alnwick Garden. This offers a superb visitor experience and is highly recommended. To the south and west of Thropton lie a veritable feast of walking and cycling opportunities. Designated trails can be enjoyed at the forests of Simsonside. Holystone and Kidland. Further up the valley is the gorgeous hamlet of Alwinton. This has a delightful pub selling hot food and is the gateway to the fantastic walking country available within the bracken-clad hills of the Northumberland National Park.
