The Heart of England / Peak District / Herefordshire region
Herefordshire is one of the most unspoilt counties in England. It borders Wales and has a wealth of historical and natural sights to visit. The Wye Valley is a walker's paradise with hundreds of footpaths covering spectacular countryside. Offa's Dyke runs through the area and the border castles of Goodrich, Skenfrith, White and Grosmont are well worth a visit. Tintern Abbey is within easy driving distance as are the Malvern Hills and Black Mountains. The historic market city of Hereford hosts the Three Choirs Festival in 2009 and is home to the famous Mappa Mundi, mediaeval chained library and Bulmer's Cider. Hay on Wye with its famous Book Festival, Jazz Festival and antique shops is about 50km away.
Ross on Wye / Hoarwithy area
The market town of Ross on Wye is only 8km away and is a charming, bustling place nestled on the hillside above the River Wye. It has several good pubs, restaurants and shops to cater for every taste. Just below the town is Wilton Bridge, the site of a Civil War battlefield and the ruins of Goodrich Castle, with its 12th Century keep, are a few km down river. Canoeing is popular on the river and canoes can be hired in Ross for the day. The International Festival (comedy, dance, opera, theatre etc) is held in the last two weeks in August in the town.
Hoarwithy itself has much to offer, from its excellent pub, the New Harp Inn, and its striking Italianate church, St Catherine's, which is a curious mix of local Celtic and southern European influences. It boasts stained glass windows by Sir Edward Burne Jones, marble pillars and exotic tiger's eye and lapis lazulis altarfront. Footpaths run from Hoarwithy up and down the river passing through tranquil scenery all the way.
How to get there
A car is essential as this is a rural property. There is a regular bus service to Hereford.

Further details indoors: The house has 2 double bedrooms (one with en-suite bath/shower), one twin room and 2 singles, all with river views. The recently renovated kitchen is fully equipped with an Aga at its heart. A separate electric twin hob and microwave/grill are also available for those unfamiliar with Aga cooking. French windows lead out to the terrace for al fresco dining. The sitting room has an open fireplace and a basket of logs is provided in the price. Extra logs available on request. The bathrooms are functional but a bit tired, compared to the rest of the house. We are hoping to renovate them during the year. The en-suite has a shower over the bath. There is an upstairs playroom for children/teenagers with a multi games table, TV/DVD player, bean bags etc. This is a house to relax in and from which to plan day excursions to the many and varied sights of the Wye Valley and Welsh Marches.
Further details outdoors: The garden is small but well tended and fenced. Garden furniture and BBQ are provided. There is room to kick a football if required but also just to sit and relax looking at the view over the valley. In the summer months there may also be fresh fruit and vegetables growing in the garden to which guests are welcome to help themselves. Parking for 2-3 cars is available.
