The Heart of England/Peak District
The River Wye runs from Plynlimon in the Welsh mountains to Chepstow on the England/Wales border, where it flows into the Severn Estuary. Along its length the Wye runs through some of the most picturesque scenery in the country, taking in several historical towns and villages dotted along its banks. Much of the river is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Old Chapel Cottage is located between the historic market towns of Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye, on Leys Hill overlooking the village of Goodrich and the River Wye as it meanders around Coppet Hill towards Symonds Yat.
This area is perfect for adults and children of all ages. There really is so much to do. We have listed below some ideas of activities which can be done in the local area:
The Wye Valley is a walkers paradise. There are so many walks in the immediate vicinity and the woodlands surrounding the cottage are full of paths and bridle paths for you to explore. Below are links to a small selection of the better known walks in the area.
Walk from Goodrich Castle - 6.5 miles
The Wye Valley Walk
Symonds Yat walk - 4 miles
Brockweir / Tintern - 6.5 miles
Symonds Yat walk - 12 miles
With the River Wye literally minutes away from Old Chapel Cottage, canoeing is a big part of life on the Wye. There are several companies in the local area who can provide you with all the equipment and can help you plan a great day out. The river is mostly gentle and tame and so beautiful, although the rapids at Symonds Yat will test your new skills. (There is a great pub, and lovely walk past here if you would prefer to just watch!)
- Wye Valley Pursuits (just down the bottom of the hill)
- Symonds Yat Canoe Hire
- Wyedean Canoe Hire
Mountain biking / Cycling
If you are a keen mountain biker then pack your bike! Lots of trails on the doorstep and also some good technical rides in the Forest of Dean.
The Pedalabikeaway centre in Canop Ponds is the place to go for bike hire and easy family trails (incl childrens bikes, baby seats, tag alongs etc).
The sandstone outcrops at Symonds Yat provide the perfect area for all climbing abilities. If you are a beginner then there are several local companies who can provide all the equipment and teach you the basics of climbing in a safe and fun manner.
There is also a static 13m climbing tower at Beechenhurst Lodge for children and adults to use.
The England / Welsh border is home to a large number of historic castles with Goodrich, Chepstow, Monmouth, St Briavels, Clearwell and Raglan castles being within 15 miles of the cottage. Goodrich is our local castle and is a short drive or 30 minute walk from the cottage.
Many of the castles host medieval battle re-enactment days over the summer where the whole family can get involved.
Pot-holing / Caving
The Forest of Dean Area has a rich mining history dating back to ancient times and has a number of iron, coal and stone mines, some of which are still active today. The towering cliffs at Symonds Yat bear evidence of the cave bearing limestone in the area and in recent years new discoveries have well and truly put the Forest of Dean area onto the U.K. caving map. Discoveries such as Otter Hole, Wetsink, Redhouse Lane Swallet and more recently Miss Graces Lane have shown that there is a huge potential for finding new cave. With large resurgences and numerous sinks in the area the opportunities for virgin cave exploration are abundant.
There are several guides available in the area to ensure you have a thrilling, safe adventure (usually adults only).

Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club
There are beautiful woodlands surrounding the cottage, and it is a safe natural playground for children. Let your imagination run wild and you can play in these woods for hours on end. Den making, tree climbing, stick collecting, exploring whatever you can think off!
