The Heart of England/Peak District

Symonds Yat and Forest of Dean are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Forest of Dean is one of the most ancient surviving forests in England, a former royal hunting ground with its timber also being used to build the Mary Rose. During the nineteenth and in the early part of the twentieth century, the forest was a major tourist attraction but today, former railway lines have been repurposed as cycle and walking paths. The link from Lydney to Parkend still survives as the Dean Forest Railway and gives visitors great views combined with the nostalgia of steam.

Ross on Wye

Symonds Yat is a hamlet steeped in history, named after Robert Symonds, a County Sheriff in the 17th century. The name ‘Yat’ means Gate, and hence the name of the cottage.

Straddling the River Wye in England, it is a popular destination for fishing, walking, canoeing, cycling, and climbling. Symonds Yat is also ideal for a quiet and relaxing break or a place to bring a young family.

Famed for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses, Symonds Yat Rock is a limestone outcrop rising some 500 feet from the banks of the river.

Archaeological finds include Mammoth and Sabre Tooth Tiger bones. At nearby King Arthur’s cave, discoveries confirm Man’s presence some 20,000 years ago. More recently, the New Weir Iron Works, used between 1590s and 1800s, was excavated.

In summary, the area has something for everybody:

Cycling, walking and running

Children and adults can chose from the new level Peregrine 10km path or 200km of trails in nearby Forest of Dean.

Canoeing, Kayaking and white water

Plenty of launch points and local hire facilities. Grade 2 white water is only a couple of minutes paddle away.

Renowned course fishing

30 species including brown trout. Hire local tackle and or fish at the local Ye Olde Ferrie Inne.

Climbing and abseiling

Thank you for your kind review. In order to accommodate all guest types, the pull out bed on sprung base does offer flexibility and especially for children offers more space during the day.
There is a Zbed (stored in the other bedroom) which can be moved and used as an alternative 'higher level' bed if preferred.
The location is amazing and I am thrilled that you loved that as much as we do!
We look forward to welcoming you back to Wye Gate in the future!

Thank you Neil for your lovely and very detailed review. We too, enjoy the scenery so much at Le Yat, such a beautiful part of the world. We are always happy to take last minute bookings and will always do our best to accommodate our clients old and new!
And you are right, the best part is that it is so close to major cities and yet feels like a world away.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Wye Gate Cottage in the near future. Good luck with your next exhibition at the gallery.
