The Heart of England/Peak District
In the county of Herefordshire lies the Wye Valley and Ross-on-Wye is known as the 'Gateway to the Wye Valley'. The picturesque Wye Valley route between Ross and Chepstow via Monmouth passes through the villages of Redbrook, Brockweir, Llandogo and Tintern and is a particularly pretty route to travel at any time of year. There are plenty of places of both scenic and historic interest to see and visit along the way, such as the beautiful villages of Symonds Yat, the east and west sides of which are connected by a rope pulled ferry. Visitors to the area can explore caves at the Doward or visit Yat Rock and Garway Hill, both of which afford stunning views over several counties. Up stream from Ross (67 miles by river but less than 40 by road), and great for a day visit, Hay Bluff towers high above the Wye Valley town of Hay-on-Wye and in that same area, the nearby Neolithic burial chamber, Arthur's Stone is well worth a visit.
Whether travelling by road or partly by river, along the way between Ross-on-Wye and Tintern you can visit castles such as those at, Wilton, Goodrich, St Briavels, White Castle and Skenfrith Castle, and other ancient places such as Tintern Abbey or Harold's Stones and the Virtuous Well at Trellech.
Canoeing is a popular way to travel on the River Wye and canoes can be hired, either in Ross-on-Wye or at Symonds Yat. Or why not stop off at Symonds Yat East for a cream tea before taking a short river cruise?
Canoeing and kayaking on the River Wye is a popular local activity, mainly during the summer months but it is also an all year round activity for the more hardy and adventurous. You can either use your own craft or canoes can be hired from several sites in the local area for an hour or more.
Ross on Wye
The beautiful villages of Symonds Yat East and West, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire are two of the most well known in the Wye Valley. Approximately six miles from the towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, Wales. The villages are a popular spot for taking forest walks, canoeing, fishing, rock climbing, cycling, taking a cruise along the River Wye or enjoying a cream tea. There is a traditional rope ferry, which is moored at the Saracen's Head Inn and crosses the river regularly, taking passengers between the two villages. As well as being a pleasurable experience, this short crossing saves a five mile journey by road.
At 500 feet above sea level, Yat Rock lies above the villages of Symonds Yat East and West affording spectacular views of the river and surrounding countryside. For bird watchers, Yat Rock is a popular place for sighting the Peregrine Falcon during summer months. Historic Goodrich Castle is also very close and is one of the many attractions open to visitors locally and King Arthur's Cave is well worth a visit. Whether you are looking for peace and tranquillity, or beautiful scenery, a river cruise from either the east or west side of the river, or any number of other activities, with great country pubs, all within walking distance and serving food as well as the local ales of the Wye Valley Brewery, amongst others, you will find a friendly welcome at the Saracen's Head, Wye Knot Inn or The Ferry Inn, to name a few. With a wide variety of attractions to choose from, Symonds Yat is the ideal place to take either a holiday or a short break.
