The Costa de Almeria region
IF you are more of an explorer than a poolside lounger or golfer, then there are two ways to explore Roquetas: - by bicycle: from the wildlife sanctuary to the West through to resort of Agua Dulce to the East, the well maintained promenade of Roquetas has been steadily expanded to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.
- by car: the Marina and golf resort of Almerimar to the West can be reached within 20 minutes. And 30 minutes east, the city of Almeria, with its many tapas bars and the Moorish Alcazaba castle, second only to the Alhambra in all of Andalusia, provides access to a very non-tourist side of Spain. Beyond, the Nature park of Capo de Gatas.
Roquetas de Mar / Playa Serena area
Roquetas has a very cosmopolitan, down-to-earth feel that avoids the concrete jungle of Benidorm and the bling of Malaga. Soaring August temperatures attract Spanish holiday makers while the more pleasant early and late summer sunshine sees a greater share of Northern European visitors.
The beach itself, more than you will ever need, is never crowded yet is groomed daily and provides parasol shaded loungers, water sports and promenade fronted cafes as far as you would want to walk. Golfers have access to the fertile fairways and greens of the Playa Serena Golf Club, a 72 par, heavily water-featured links course. For evening cuisine, the excellent Spanish Meson La Gamba de Oro is highly recommended or else choose from a wide range of restaurants providing European and Asian cuisine. Or dine from your own ground level terrace, overlooking the pool and garden area.
