The Costa de Almeria region
The province of Almería is located in the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula on the shores of the Mediterranean sea. Its whole extension, which covers 8,774 square kilometres, has a great geographic diversity.
The passing of time has also caused disparities in the landscape. As a result, in Almería, you can enjoy popular, modern tourist resorts and natural areas where mankind has barely left its mark. The climate is Mediterranean, warm and dry, with low rainfall. The number of hours of sun is very high with over 3,000 hours per year. The temperature remains mild throughout the year. It does not fall below an average of 13ºC in winter, nor does it rise above an average 25º C in summer.
Thanks to this mild climate, visitors can enjoy all the possibilities offered by the province at any time of year. Almería has been visited by many people throughout its history, perhaps because of its beautiful landscape or perhaps because of its geographical location. The important archaeological remains found in the province have helped researchers discover and analyse the existence of old cultures. On the coast of Almería, you can enjoy varied folklore and plenty of fiestas, inherited from ancestors, as well as popular handicrafts designed with painstaking care (pottery, ceramics, esparto, rugs and marble). Gastronomic specialities such as paprika, gurullos (stews), porridge and seafood soup are also a legacy from the region's rich past.
Roquetas de Mar / Playa Serena area
Roquetas de Mar consists of the town of Roquetas de Mar (once a fishing village) and the resort of Roquetas de Mar (Roquetas de Mar Urbanizaction in Spanish). Read more about the area after this description of how to drive on your own to Pueblo Andaluz.. 1) Zero your meter when driving from the airport. 2) Drive out from the airport and look for signs towards Almeria and Malaga (NOT Murcia or Alicante which are in the opposite direction; you will be driving south-west ). 3) Once on the motorway to Almeria watch your meter; the ramp off towards Almeria is on the 20th km. You do not go off there, continue on the motorway 4) Your meter shows now 30 km - Sign - Roquetas de Mar A 391 - take this exit! 5) You'll drive along a double-file, one-way traffic road with palms in the middle - follow these palms, they will lead you almost all the way to Pueblo Andaluz. IF there is a sign saying Urbanizactiones (there wasn't when I was making this description) follow it. Otherwise just follow the palm trees, you are on your way to Roquetas resort 6) 35 km - you will see on your right Gran Plaza - a big shopping centre (with almost anything, including furniture; you may want to visit it some time) - keep straight. If you have missed the Gran Plaza, don't worry, just keep straight on all the roundabouts anyway 7) You'll now encounter lots of roundabouts - keep straight and follow the palm trees 8) At 36.6 km there will be a white board saying 'Puerto, Urbanizaciones' (Puerto - Harbour, Urbanizaciones - Resorts) - follow the sign 9) After approx. 37th km the road becomes a two-way street for approx 1 km, keep straight on; afterwards a double lane with palm trees in the middle again, keep straight on. 10) 40th km - slow down - first comes a big speed bump, then a big roundabout (Mercadona - supermarket on the right). 11) Continue slowly straight on, double lane, palms in the middle. At almost exacly 41st km you will come to a strange, small roundebout where you have to make a left-forward turn (not full left, but sort of left-forward), it is rather tricky; then very soon take first street to the left - turn left. This street is called ENTREMARES. This is the street which is parallel to SIERRA NEVADA Street in which our agent has his office. You will have to collect the keys to the studio, the swimming pool and the parking lot from him. Drive approx. 100 m along Entremares Street and turn left into the little street connecting the two parallel streets. Turn right into the Sierra Nevada Street (one-way traffic) and park the car as soon as you can before you pass (and miss) our agent, RMS Properties, situated on the left hand side of this street but to the right from the road you turned from into Sierra Nevada.
10 kms along the coast, and is is a popular resort for tourists with good beaches. The salt lagoons begin at Las Marinas 4kms south of Roquetas and are a good vantage point to watch the magnificent flamingos and other water birds in just about every season. The most popular and well developed tourist resort. Situated in the Province of Almeria, Roquetas de Mar is a traditional Spanish fishing town and holiday resort.
Roquetas de Mar is part of the Natural Park and it marshes attract many species of bird, including flamingos who come here to breed.
It offers a small marina surrounded by Tapas bars and restaurants, specializing in fish dishes.
Water sports for the sports enthusiast there are excellent activities available. You can practice all kinds of aquatic sports such as water-skiing, jet-skiing, swimming, fishing, diving, boating and yachting.
There's a mini-train available to explore this resort.
From the 23rd August to the 1st September Almeria celebrates its fair in honour of Our Lady of the Sea, with open air dances, sports competitions, the traditional Flamenco Festival in the Plaza Vieja, fun guaranteed into the early hours of the morning.
Tourism is big business along the holiday strip, with shops selling local crafts jostling with numerous restaurants and bars, and myriad activities on offer from horse riding to scuba diving or sailing. Roquetas has an 18-hole golf course (at Playa Serena) and a specially designated nudist beach. Those interested in history will enjoy exploring the ruins of the medieval Castilla de Santa Ana and other fortifications in the area, and bird-watchers have a treat in store at the Las Marinas salt marsh and Punta Entinas beaches a few miles south of the village, where flamingos, egrets and avocets gather.
How to get there
The easiest way is to take a taxi from the airport. Taxis can be found right in front of the arrivals hall. The price is about €50. Tell the driver you wish to go to Pueblo Andaluz, in the close vicinity of Playa Luna Hotel. You can also book a transfer to and from the airport while booking your stay through our agents. Please contact the owner for more information. There are also many car hire companies at the airport. You hire a car at the airport and return it in Roquetas. The reverse applies on your way back.
For the more experienced travellers who speak Spanish it may pay to take a bus from the Almeria airport to the centre of Almeria (Bus No.20; when you leave the airport building, turn right and walk approximately 30 m to the bus stop); you will have to ask your way from the Almeria bus terminal to the bus stop for Roquetas de Mar (approximately 100 m walk). Tell the driver you wish to go to the Playa Luna Hotel in Roquetas Urbanization, and he/she will let you know where to get off. It is a 150 m walk from the bus stop to the Pueblo Andaluz Complex. The ticket will cost you a fraction of the taxi fare.
