The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa de Almeria is set on the vast plains of salt flats and sand dunes at the foot of the Sierra de Gador where the once barren wilderness is now an intensive horticultural area. One of the virtues of the west coast of Almeria is being able to combine the comforts of the urban developments with the scenic beauty of natural areas that have been left untouched by man. The province boasts about 200 miles (322km) of varied, scenic coastline that attracts package tourists to its developed resorts near the main towns, but also offers idyllic spots for nature-lovers to explore with its many uncoil fishing villages, long sandy beaches and small intimate coves popular with nudists. Sunny and mild, Almeria lies southeast of the Iberian Peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea, still bearing the archaeological evidence of the many ancient cultures, from the Tartness’s and Phoenicians to the Romans and Visigoths, who were drawn here by the natural beauty and useful maritime geographic location.
The region retains an African flavor, imbibed from that continent which is a short distance away across the Mediterranean. Inland, Almeria is rather barren and arid, and boasts Europe’s only desert region around the village of Taverns, which has been used as the location for several western movies. In the east the lunar-landscaped Cabot de Gato-Nijar nature reserve with its rugged coastline, attracts hikers, birders and scuba divers.
Enix, situated at 723 metres on the gentle lower slopes of the Sierra de Gador, has fantastic views of the coast, which is about 15 minutes drive away. La Envia golf course is about 15 minutes drive from Enix. The village is well known locally for the pure drinking water it possesses and the Moors built a total of twenty drinking fountains in the town of which, some are still used today. Enix was previously known for its mines which are now abandoned and previously brought it its wealth. It is a rustic enclave of Moorish origin, which preserves its original features in its architecture of narrow graded streets with white flat-roofed houses and the surrounding land is rich with almond and fruit trees.
Local Facilities: Of the local eateries, the two main restaurants in the centre of the village, (and less than 100 metres apart), are Cafe Almeria and Café-Bar Avelina. Both have an unrivalled reputation - from the mountains to the coast, for their delicious, high quality food at reasonable prices. Café Avelina is directly behind the church and Café Almeria is directly at the bottom of Calle Malaga. You will need to check day and evening opening times as they vary with the seasons, but Café Almeria is generally open on Friday and Saturday night.
Local Markets: Looking for a bargain? For local markets, there are two of note: Roquetas De Mar - every Thursday between 10AM and 2PM on the long avenue directly in front of the Gran Plaza Commercial Centre. As you travel from Enix and the main coast road towards Roquetas and the Gran Plaza, take the 3rd exit off the roundabout in front of Gran Plaza. Also check out the Sunday morning market at La Puebla de Vicar, which is closer to the coast than the village of Vicar itself. From Enix, heading down the mountain road to Roquetas, follow the signs for Vicar. When you get to a T - junction, (which shows Vicar is to the right), take the LEFT-HAND turn and follow the signs for La Puebla de Vicar.
