Gîte Magnolia is situated in a charming, picturesque village less than 20 kms north of Beziers in southern France. Nestled at the foothills of Haut Languedoc Naturel Parc, it's a gateway to fantastic walking and cycling routes, several good golf courses or kayaking on the River Orb. There's also a choice of superb, sandy Mediterranean beaches within a 30 minute drive.

The gîte is named after the evergreen tree, Magnolia Grandiflora, which sits in the middle of the garden providing shade, privacy, fragrance and beauty. The full length window of the gîte front door looks out on this magnificent tree under which is a large table for al fresco dining or apero. The gîte is part of an old vignerons house built in early 20th century. It has been fully renovated and, while retaining the characteristics of a traditional French home, it contains modern facilities for a relaxing holiday. There is a lovely 9m x 3m unchlorinated swimming pool available too.

We have secure parking for bicycles, motorbikes or kayaks and can give advice on good routes and places to find. Besides the range of outdoor activities, this area is one of France's largest wine-growing areas so there are many opportunities to sample local wines. And naturally, being in France, there's a great variety of restaurants and cafe's as well as local markets to visit.

The gîte is self-catering, however, we can also provide a 3 or 4-course French cuisine meal, cooked for you and any guests on request. Many of our guests enjoy having a night off cooking and relaxing in the garden while the work is done for them! Prices depend on the menu selected.

The village has a bar/restaurant, a grocery store and a 'depot de pain' for the daily baguette. However, to get the most out of discovering this area it is advisable to have a car or motorbike.

We are in a wonderful climate with 300 days of sunshine per year, which means you can have great weather for walking, cycling or golf even in winter. This really is a year-round fantastic destination.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Languedoc-Roussillon is blessed with varied terrain and a predictable, warm climate. The area has long, sandy beaches; wild mountains and hills; vineyards; remote villages and bustling, vibrant cities. Languedoc-Roussillon is filled with dramatic history, especially that of the Cathars and there are a number of sites to visit including the medieval city of Carcassonne and the famous Cathar fortress of Montsegur.

The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, winds through this area from Toulouse to the Mediterranean, alongside which you can walk or cycle in the shady, tree-lined pathway. Or hire a boat and enjoy the slower pace and different scenic perspectives from the canal.

Naturally food and wine play their part here. The cuisine is as varied as the terrain - from coastal towns brimming with seafood and shellfish, Camargue beef, fresh herbs from the rough hills and the home of Languedoc's 'national' dish - the cassoulet, a kind of baked bean stew. Not to mention the variety of amazing cheeses, fruits and game. All accompanied by some of local wines from what is France's largest wine-growing area. It is undergoing a renaissance of its viticulture with a vast improvement in quality and grape variety and now has a wide selection of underrated vintages.

There are also vibrant and charming cities to visit: Montpellier, Carcassonne, Narbonne, Beziers and Perpignan to mention a few. Each with their own distinctive character, history and appeal.

There are just too many places of interest to mention, but there really is something for everyone - come and see for yourself!

Roquebrun

Causses et Veyran is a small village north of Beziers. It is a wine producing village that lies amid the vineyards of the Hérault department in Languedoc-Roussillon. The village is typical of this region of France with old stone houses, colourful shutters and red, terracotta rooftops softened by centuries of hot summer sunshine. The surrounding countryside tells the story of the village and the region. Everywhere you look, you will see hectare upon hectare of vineyards, the origin of the excellent wines of the Saint Chinian label.

Causses et Veyran is calm and unpretentious, yet fulfils expectations of a southern French rural village. Totally authentic, many of its houses have stood for centuries and generations of French families have lived here. There's a depot du pain, a grocery store, La Poste and a lovely bar/restaurant. There are many excellent places in the countryside and neighbouring towns where you can enjoy the cuisine and wines of the region.

We are near Roquebrun and Cessenon-sur-Orb, both popular and bustling towns which date back to medieval times. Here you'll find local bars, restaurants, supermarket, butcher, bank, hairdresser etc.

Roquebrun has a 'beach' alongside the River Orb for swimming and is ideally located for many outdoor activities including kayaking nearby. Cessenon also has a great swimming section of the river and on Saturdays there is a food market and during summer a lively mid-August festival. A change of pace occurs in September with the vendange (grape harvest) and the start of spectacular autumn colours on the vines.

The roads are fantastic for cycling at any time of the yeat, with good weather, little wind and sparse traffic (the vendange being the exception!). There are also excellent off-road cycling tracks too. The range of walks is staggering from gentle strolls through the vineyard to more challenging hikes up the mountains of the Haut-Languedoc Naturel Parc. As we also run an outdoor activity holiday business, (www.mountainsandmaps.com), we can provide in-depth advice on cycling and walking routes.

We are in a micro-climate, with little rain and plenty of sunshine, even in winter. It has an amazing quality of light which provides spectacular sunsets over the surrounding hills.

"Lovely gite in gorgeous village"

Well appointed, fully self-contained gite in a lovely village close to Beziers in the small, pretty village of a Causses-et-Veyran. The large courtyard garden, with the all important swimming pool, was perfect for relaxing in - and was beautifully shaded by the large Magnolia tree that has given the property it's name. Great hosts Jane & Merv. Definitely recommend this place.

"Great gite with excellent pool and handy location for taste of Languedoc."

The gite is in great condition and is very well equipped. This is an excellent base for exploring the region with the Orb valley, national park, beaches and historic towns within a reasonable drive. The pool and garden are very relaxing, with a beautiful magnolia tree the inspiration for the gite's name. The living area is compact, which may seem restrictive if unlucky with weather, but we ate in the garden or out every evening and it is sunny most of the year. The owners, Jane and Merv, are in the property beside the gite and are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Welcome supplies on arrival were very much appreciated.

"Wonderful Gite with fabulous pool and very helpful owners"

A balanced location between the mountains and the coast that allows you to get the best of both worlds. The gite has recently been completed and is well laid out and spotlessly clean with everything provided you need in the kitchen as well as beach towels and lots of local guides you can consult. Parking is easy, off the road beside the gite. The garage is also available but we did not use it.

The pool is situtated in a lovely garden and it was perfect to sit at one of the tables and just relax. The village has a bar/restaurant and bread shop and there are numerous supermarkets close by where you can stock up.

Jane is very helpful and provided lots of advice about places to visit, walks ,etc. There is so much to see and do in the area all within a short drive. We would recommend staying here and hope to return.

"Wonderful hosts make for a grand holiday in beautiful Languedoc"

We recently enjoyed two weeks in beautifully scenic Causses et Veyran and environs. Jane and Merv have a lovely, quiet setting with ready access to nearby market towns and fantastic countryside. They are knowledgeable about cycling and walking in the area and provided helpful information - we were there to cycle. There are many routes available, including a fabulous ride through hills and valleys with no traffic that was especially recommended by Merv. The village photo was taken on that route.

I was on my own for the first few days before my husband arrived and it was especially nice to have Jane and Merv nearby to assist, if needed. The gite is newly constructed and it is comfortable and well-equipped. In the warmer seasons, guests would be enjoying more time in the beautiful pool and garden. Even though we were there in the winter, when it was too cold for swimming, the weather was mostly cooperative and we were able to bicycle every day!

We also enjoyed two great meals with Jane and Merv - the best meals of the trip! (And nice not to have to drive home afterward - so we could enjoy some local wine.) I think they plan to offer meal options to guest, going forward, and I highly recommend "Chef Jane".

Thank you for your review. It's a pleasure to cook for guests and it was your good company and conversation that made the meals memorable. Hope to see you here again.
