Home description
El Tejar is the highest house in the small village of Montecorto, a quarter of an hour from Ronda. From its lofty perch you have extraordinary panoramic views of the Grazalema mountains. The house, which has featured in several interior design magazines, is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style. Evoking the region's Moorish past. Base elements of whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes.
There are hundreds of books, CD players in all rooms and masses of paintings and framed prints. Bedrooms have the same colourful feel: linen is top of the range, mattresses too, and all are big on space. A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day and can prepare meals for guests, should they wish. And sculpted into the hillside is a gorgeous pool surrounded by terraced areas, shaded by quince, olive, almond and citrus trees. A wholly exceptional rental property. There is a computer with free 24 hour Internet access.

The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
El Tejar is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere and one of Andalusia's most beautiful regions. The walking here is some of the best in Europe and the region is famed for its 'White Villages' or 'Pueblos Blancos', some of the most spectacular villages of the Iberia Peninsula.
Although you're in wild mountain country the beaches of the Costa del Sol are just over an hour's drive away. If you tire of the swimming pool, as well as the beach there's a beautiful natural swimming area with plenty of shade and a restaurant just 10 minutes from the house at Arroyomolinos, set in a beautiful valley where an artificial lake has been created by damming a river that flows into the Zahara reservoir.
We have some great little local restaurants in our area - most cheap-and-cheerful, some gourmet - and we pride ourselves as having the best guest information pack of any rental property in this area which is the fruit of more than 20 years of living in the mountaisn close to Ronda. Guy, El Tejar's owner, has written guide books to the area and you benefit from his deep appreciation of southern Spain and its culture.
Ronda / Montecorto Ronda area
Montecorto is a quiet, friendly village and is situated at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe. (The owner of El Tejar has written a guide to the best walks). There are a number of bars and restaurants including one in the pine forest where you can have al fresco meals. There will always be somebody who is keen to talk to you! There is a bakers, four small grocery stores - two of them provide baskets so you can pick things off the shelf, a useful thing for non-Spanish speakers - as well as a bank and chemists. A lot of the fruit and vegetables for sale in the village come from the fertile terraces beneath the village. he village of Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain. And Sevilla, Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz and Granada can all be easily visited from Montecorto. Just a quarter of an hour away is the extraordinary Roman theatre of Acinipo, hewn out of solid rock, and the Pileta cave - with some of Europe's best rock painting - is just a short drive away.
Ronda, one of Spain's most spectacular towns, can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. We provide arriving guests with a booklet listing our favourite bars and restaurants, interesting visits in the area, maps of the village, of Ronda and of the surrounding area, a history of the house and general information about the house. We have found that this little booklet really helps you to get the most out of this beautiful area where we have lived for nearly two decades.

Further details
Included daily help
Two and a half hours of daily cleaning help from a charming and discreet Spanish maid is included in the weekly rental price. What's so unique about El Tejar is that, if you should wish, Francisca can also prepare a wide range of 'tapas' for you - these are made in her own home and then delivered to you for your lunch or dinner. She can also cook a full 3 course meal three course meal (minimum of 4 people) which will be served to you at your candlelit dining table. Francisca uses organically grown vegetables from her husband's vegetable plot, proper stock in her soups, and prepares delicious meat and fish dishes. She will serve you at dinner and clean up once coffee/herbal teas have been served in the sitting room or beneath the stars on the terrace. NOTE: Occasionally guests prefer for Francisca NOT to come up to El Tejar to clean and tidy. No problem.
Why is this place so remarkable?
What is so special about El Tejar is that, even though you are at the edge of the village, when you are sat on the terraces or by the pool no other house is visible. So you have the best of both worlds: easy access to the village shops and bars yet once you arrive at El Tejar you feel really away from it all. The house feels much more like a home than a rental property. There is an incredible collection of books on Spain as well as masses of novels and other literature. The owner lived here for many years and has decorated the house with masses of T.L.C. Everybody is moved to superlatives when describing El Tejar. And the housekeeper Francisca - should you need assistance - is always keen to help you in every possible way. Her hard work means that you have more time to lap up the atmosphere at El Tejar and simply... relax.
Tucked away in a corner is a computer with free 24 hour a day dial up. El Tejar is not suitable for toddlers because of the steep stairs. But children aged 4/5 and above will love the house. Parents should note that the swimming pool is a uniform 1.6m deep. BABYSITTING POSSIBLE. Our ever-friendly housekeeper Paqui can, if you would like, babysit for your children on weekday evenings. (This is for an additional charge)
