Home description
Dar Hajra is hidden away in a forest just above the undiscovered ‘white village’ of Montecorto, close to Ronda. From the house’s rocky perch you are treated to a stunning views of the Grazalema mountains. A path flanked by rosemary, lavendar and honeysuckle climbs up to the house’s entrance. It looks traditional enough from the outside but within is a house where fantasy came first in the design brief.
The mountainside has been wrapped into the fabric of the building and rock adds a stunning decorative element: Dar Hajra means ‘House of the Rocks’. A pyramidal atrium is the visual axis around which the open-plan lounge/diner turns. Three huge drop arch windows lead to the terrace and infinity edge plunge pool whose waters seem to merge with the sky. The sitting room/kitchen/diner are one huge open space, there is a large master bedroom, extraordinary bathroom and fabulous paintings and sculptures. The house has featured in several design mag features: seeing is believing at Dar Hajra.

The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
Dar Hajra is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere and one of Andalusia's most beautiful regions. The walking here is some of the best in Europe and the region is famed for its 'White Villages' or 'Pueblos Blancos', some of the most spectacular villages of the Iberia Peninsula. Although you're in wild mountain country the beaches of the Costa del Sol are just over an hour's drive away. If you tire of the plunge pool, as well as the beach there's a beautiful natural swimming area with plenty of shade and a restaurant just 10 minutes from the house at Arroyomolinos, set in a beautiful valley where an artificial lake has been created by damming a river that flows into the Zahara reservoir. We have some great little local restaurants in our area - most cheap-and-cheerful, some gourmet - and we pride ourselves as having the best guest information pack of any rental property in this area which is the fruit of more than 20 years of living in the mountaisn close to Ronda. Guy, Dar Hajra's owner, has written guide books to the area and you benefit from his deep appreciation of southern Spain and its culture.
Ronda / Montecorto Ronda area
The pretty village of Montecorto is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe. (Guy has written a guide to the best walks, a copy of which will be waiting for you in the house). The fauna and flora of the Park are remarkable: more than a third of Spain's plant species grow here and ornithologists come from the world over because of the abundance of raptors and migrating birds. Just a quarter of an hour away is the extraordinary Roman theatre of Acinipo, hewn out of solid rock, and the Pileta cave - with some of Europe's best rock painting - is just a short drive away.
Ronda, one of Spain's most spectacular towns, can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. The village of Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain. And Sevilla, Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz and Granada can all be easily visited from Montecorto
Local activities include swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, mountaineering, paragliding

Further details indoors: Bathrooms: 1 bathroom Bathroom 1 -Toilet,Bath with Shower You'll never forget this bathroom. There is a huge circular scree bath tub sculpted between the rocks and it has a huge shower rose that we had made in the Fes medina. There is an huge window, again designed so that you can lie in the bath tub - there is room for two! - and look at the distant peaks of the Grazalema Park. There is a long wooden dressing table/sink with masses of space for all your sopas, creams etc. And even in the bathroom there are framed prints, some from India, others from Spain. And lots of potted plants. The light scree floor, the light, the rock and the views help make this - we bet - one of the most memorable bathrooms you'll ever have washed in.
Bedrooms: 2 bedrooms, sleeps maximum of 4 people Bedroom 1 - 1 Large Double Bed Bedroom 2 - 1 Double Bed The main bedroom is reached via a staircase that winds down through the rocks. It has a really comfortable bed with excellent mattress as well as a thinner top mattress (Scandinavian style). If you've never slept on a bed like this you'll be amazed. Linen is top quality and we supply light Indian quilts as well as blankets. The bedroom has a fabulous view out to the mountains: the house was designed with a slightly lower-than-average window so that you can laze in bed and lap up the view. There is a huge walk-in wardrobe with masses of shelf and hanging space. The upstairs bedroom is reached by a second winding staircase which leads up through rocks (the one you see in the photo taken across the dining table). This bedroom is smaller yet is also really romantic and has been decorated in the greens and blues that are typical of Moroccan Riad design. It has a door leading out to a top roof terrace. The two single beds can be zipped together to make a king size double.
