About this location
The Andalucia region
Spain's region of Andalucia is composed of eight provinces, stretching from the south-east to the south-west of the country, each one named for its capital city: Cadiz, Cordoba, Jaen, Huelva, Almeria, Malaga, Granada and Seville.
Andalucia is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, thanks to its sandy beaches, beautiful countryside, spectacular mountain ranges, fabulous monuments and high-spirited people who live life to the full and are well known for their exuberance, warmth and hospitality.
Andalucia is also home of flamenco and bullfighting, which can be best enjoyed at the region´s countless ferias and romerias.
As well as Andalucia's fascinating cities and dazzling shores, the region is sprinkled with tiny unspoiled villages and whitewashed towns - the famous pueblos blancos - which tourists often overlook, these are all well worth a visit.
Ronda is one of Andalucía's loveliest towns, spectacularly situated, steeped in history, reputedly Hemingway's favourite city in all Spain.
Winters can be cold but in the main it's a delightful climate with 300 or so days of sunshine each year, and daytime summer temperatures usually around 30ºC.
The town itself is 739m above sea level, with a population of 35,000, is a delight, richly endowed with a heritage of magnificent buildings. Although one of the oldest cities in Spain, with a history which dates back to the mists of time, it was only in the Middle Ages that Ronda finally came into its own, achieving the status of an independent kingdom under Arabic rule.
There are plazas in the surrounding streets where one can take coffee and drinks together with the wonderful local tapas. The narrow streets are full of interest with white washed walls, cobblestones and many beautiful churches and historic buildings.
The parks and the architecture are a joy, spend an afternoon at the Mondragon Palace once the residence of Kings. The cool patios and jasmine scented gardens with the refreshing sound of fountains, it is easy to imagine oneself back in time when the Moors ruled this part of Spain.
Ronda is a special place; it is one of those places that pulls you back time after time. One never tires of its beauty. Along side all of this culture, are many modern day shops where one can buy almost anything. The restaurants are many and some are famed for their gastronomic excellence. Ronda although visited by tourists from all over the world has not been spoilt or over run.
Wander the streets at your own pace and take in the magnificent architecture, sit for a while in one of the many delightful little squares and just breathe in the atmosphere.
You might take a horse-drawn carriage and clip clop around the main tourist sights or if you are feeling a little more energetic take a guided walking tour.
Nearby, there is a huge variety of activities available, including painting, photography, bird-watching, climbing, horse-riding, paragliding and a host of other interesting pursuits.
The town centre has a range of shops and supermarkets with a daily food market and a flea market held every Sunday morning.
