The Lazio region

WHY LAZIO?
• Rome
• Hadrians Villa (completed in 134 AD)
• The fountains and gardens of Villa DEste
• Vineyards of Frascati
• Tombs of Tarquinia, founded in 12th century BC
• Easy access to the cruise ship port at Civitavecchia

Lazio, birthplace of two of mankind’s greatest institutions, the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church, is dominated and largely defined by its capital, Rome. Since ancient Roman times the region has been an extension of the city, where noble Roman families created their own towns and the wealthy built their villas in the surrounding countryside. Lazio is a treasure trove of the remains of age old civilizations: bridges, churches, towers, villas, monasteries, aqueducts, arches — the list is endless. To the north of Rome are Etruscan sites and the tombs of Tarquinia, founded in the 12th century BC. The ruins of Ostia Antica, a 4th century BC port city at the mouth of the Tiber are located west of the city, with delightful beaches nearby. East of Rome toward the mountains is Tivoli, a favourite retreat for the wealthy at the height of the Roman Empire. Visit the remains of Hadrian’s Villa, completed in 134 AD, and the beautiful fountains and gardens of the Villa d’Este.

Lazio is situated in the centre of Italy, between italian regions - Abruzzo, Toscana, Umbria, Molise and Campania. Today Lazio is composed of 5 provinces: Viterbo, Rieti, Rome, Frosinone and Latina. Lazio’s split-up history, rich in dizzy happenings and incredible differences finds explanation also in the physical differences of its territory: 20% is flat, 54% is hilly and 26% mountainous. Besides, Lazio is rich in lakes, volcanes (which are extinct fortunately), mountains higher than 2000 mt, flat and rocky coasts, and not to be unmindful of the marvellous isles of the Pontine archipelago, Ponza and Zannone at the top. Lazio lies in the centre of Italy and even all social and economic indicators seem to correspond to its physical position. Then, it is a joint-land between the North and the South of Italy under many aspects, with a remarkable peculiarity: it is the richest casket of cultural and environmental assets in the world - some universal examples are the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum and the Roman Fori.

If along the centuries the city on the Tiber gained the appellation of caput-mundi and eternal city, today it could not be nothing else but the heart of Lazio and the capital of the Italian State. But Rome can be considered twice capital, for being also the centre of catholic christianity and having inside of itself the Vatican State.

Rome / La Pisana area

Rome, known as the Eternal City has attracted visitors for over 2,000 years. There is so much to write about Rome, but the best way to know it is visiting it and above all feeling its atmosphere. It is one of the most magnificentand romantic cities in the world. Rome has an attractive mix of grandiose sights and bustling city life. Life is sweet – the cake is there for the eating. Italian designer shopping, smooth ice cream, frothy cappuccino and exquisite wines to name but a few things.

Where do you start to summarise the history of the Eternal City? A good date might be 21 April 753 B.C. The day when Romulus is said to have founded the city after murdering his twin brother Remus. During the following centuries Rome grew into a powerful empire whose peak was during the rule of Marcus Aurelius in161-180 A.D. Just like the ancient city, Rome today is built on seven hills: Capitolino, Palatino, Quirinale,
Viminale, Esquilino, Celio and Aventino. The central area is called Campo Marzio, named after the Roman god of war, and was the ancient army’s training grounds. This is where many of the famous sights are located. Other well-known areas are Trastevere, on the other side of the River Tibern, and Monti.

Rome restaurants cater to all tastes. But ”when in Rome, do as the Romans do” and choose the less extravagant restaurants and trattorias for a memorable dining experience. The Italian word for dinner, cena, comes from the Latin convivum. A word which means “live together” and that is precisely what you do. Eating is a social get-together which lasts at least three courses – often even at lunchtime. The Romans do not eat dinner until 9 in the evening. The traditional Roman pasta is called Carbonara and is made from pork, and
whipped egg yolk with lots of parmesan and black pepper, or all’Amatriciana with bacon, tomato and onion.
Vegetables are ordered as a side dish, contorno, accompanying the main dish, e.g. tossed spinach or chicory with garlic and peperoncino (Spanish peppers).

The Romans love to meet over an aperitivo around 19.30, after which they either go on to a restaurant or home for dinner. The drinks need not necessarily be alcoholic. Many bars serve light snacks which are included in the price. After 23.00 most of those looking to party head over to the Testaccio area. Named after the mountain of discarded amphoras, the area is home to many locali, ranging from small piano bars to equally small
discos. Among the best known are the rock bars Akab and Radio Londra, Latino chic Caruso, and Rome’s first gay disco – Alibi. Make sure you take a night out on the bar
and club scene in Rome.

High fashion shopping in Rome is concentrated to two streets running parallel to each other from the Spanish
Steps. Via Condotti is home to Prada, Valentino, Gucci, Armani, and Max-Mara. Over on Via Borgognona, one can find the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Gianfranco Ferré, Laura Biagiotti, and Gai Mattiolo. Closer to Piazza Navona is Via dei Giubbonari, and its street fashion stores McQueen and Liquid. Nearby is also Via del
Governo Vecchio, with its elegant vintage fashion boutiques. Upmarket antiques can be found on Via dei
Coronari, jewellers on Via dell’Orso and Via dei Pianellari. In the long shopping street Via del Corso, which runs from Piazza Venezia down to Piazza del Popolo, there are shops to suit most pockets. Chains such as Stefanel, Etam, The Group and Benetton are sandwiched between specialist boutiques. Also many shoe shops, sports shops and music stores such as Il Messaggero Musicale. Cola di Rienzo in the Prati district of the city is also lined with various reasonably priced shops.

ATTICO AURELIA ANTICA is situated only 5 km from St. Peter's and the Vatican City, in a nice, safe, residential area called Aurelio, with all kinds of shops, 2 supermakets, an open-air market, bars and restaurants. This is in the western part of Rome, near the Janiculum and Villa Pamphili. By walking through this beautiful park you arrive to Trastevere. Nearby you can choose between 3 different swimmings pools, and Rome's biggest Water Fun Park is only a short busride away. Bus nr. 881 or 98 brings you directly to the historical centre of Rome. Nearest bus stop at 200 meters.

It's said that all roads lead to Rome but let me add that if you need a break from the hectic pace of the city, only 15 min away, they surely lead to Attico Aurelia Antica in Via dei Brusati 33!!!

Guestbook for Attico Aurelia Antica

"We had the most wonderful time staying in Hanne's penthouse apartment. It was very spacious, comfortable and clean. Best of all, the views from the various balconies were breath taking! It was easy to get in and out of the city by bus and train. The best part was being in the heart of an Italian community. This is the way to experience Italy - without all of the tourists. We fell in love with a trattoria just around the corner from the apt - al Giardino d Abruzzo. We ate there three nights. Ask for Mario! His English is very good. We would definitely stay at Hanne's place again."
- Dori and Tony (11.11.2008)

"My family and I enjoyed our stay at the apartment. We found the location to be convenient, a very short walk to the bus stop and easy access to St Peter's square or a Metro station for transportation anywhere in Rome. We are a family of 5 and found the apartment to be comfortable for us. Hanne's warm welcome and advice helped get our trip off to a great start. I would recommend this apartment to others visiting Rome. Arrevederci!"
- Roberta Costa (2.4.2008)

"Congratulations with your new guestbook! I'm sure you will get many nice messages! Thank you for 4 lovely days in your fantastic 3 Room Penthouse Apartment. We especially loved the unexpected warm days so early in March, so we used the beautiful roof terrace a lot! My husband and I had breakfast in the sun on the terrace outside the living room every day. We will surely be back soon. Thanks again!"
- Jorun (5.3.2008)
