Villa | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Casa Galilei is a recently restored Renaissance apartment with three/four bedrooms, two bathrooms and up-to-date facilities, including central heating and WiFi access. It is a unique property, and even has its own hidden caves dating back to Etruscan times. Formerly the guest quarters of a 16th century monastery, Casa Galilei retains many original features such as exposed chestnut beams and hand-fired terracotta tiles throughout.. It is 200 sq.metres in size and arranged over 2 floors with an entrance at ground level outside the monastery and an entrance inside the monastery.
The property is located in the friendly village of Capena that offers plenty of local colour and history, as well as a good selection of restaurnts, bars and shops and a thriving artists' community. Because it is approximately 40 minutes by car or public transport from the centre of Rome, you can explore the Eternal City by day, and return to a quiet rural retreat in the evening. The coast and lakes can be reached by car in approximately 45 minutes. A couple of lovely pools set in their own leafy grounds are a short drive away.
The location is ideal for exploring Rome and also areas to the north as far as Tuscany. After a hard day's sight-seeing, guests really appreciate relaxing in the friendly, village atmosphere and excellent, well-priced restaurants without a tourist menu in sight.

The Lazio region
Please visit the Lazio Tourist website: www.aptprovroma.it for more information on the region of Lazio. This website is in English.
The coastal resort of Fregene is a 45 minute drive from Capena, and the town of Sperlonga is approximately 1.5 hours away by car. However, the best and nearest place to cool off in Summer is in a lake. Lake Bracciano is a 45 minute drive away, and Lake Martignano, which is as little more off the beaten track, is also a 45 minute drive from Capena.
Capena is a thriving village of 5,500 inhabitants near the Sabine Hills. Despite its proximity to the city centre (it lies just 35km north of Rome along the Via Tiberina) the village retains a very distinct rural flavour – and many of the older residents have hardly ever set foot in the metropolis.
The apartments are located in and around the town’s ancient Rocca, a rocky outcrop that initially housed a medieval fortress and settlement, later superseded by a Renaissance monastery. The monastery was gradually sold off to private individuals – many of them artists – in the seventies. One of the best-known artists living and working in Capena today is Rosina Wachtmeister. The sixteenth-century building then became the heart of a small separate community made up of a picturesque jumble of houses, stairways and cobbled streets with a relaxed bohemian feel.
There are several outdoor pools in Capena, which are open during the summer. In addition, there are several thermal baths in the area, the largest of which is the Therme dei Papi.
Local festivals include a wine festival in October. There is also a torchlit procession of masked figures carrying holy relics on Easter Monday.

"A unique apartment in an old fortified castle"
This place is amazing. The "rocca" (castle) would originally have comprised the whole village. The village has since expanded to one side, so the rocca is now at the far end of Capena, facing a semi-pedestrianized square with a friendly café. As there is no through traffic, and as the walls are extremely thick, silence is assured. Capena is ideal to explore (by car) the villa that Emperor Hadrian had built for himself in Tivoli, as well as the various villas and gardens built by the Roman nobility in the 16th century (villa d'Este, villa Lante, Bomarzo, palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, etc.). Rome is only 45 min by car and can easily be visited for the day. The apartment itself has everything one needs; Juliet is helpful and efficient. Capena has a delicious ice-cream shop, a few restaurants and a small supermarket. There are a few steps both inside and outside the apartment.
