Il Sogno-The Brook Cottage
About the home
Since its spring 2008 inauguration, Il Sogno has been readily called "home" by many guests. It is a comfortable yet elegant place to unwind in the silence and fresh air of the countryside. It is the ideal vantage point from which to visit the city centre or the gorgeous lakes Martignano, Bracciano and Vico and to take a day trip to the neighboring regions of Umbria and Tuscany.
Have a swim and then take in the splendor of the setting sun after a busy day of sightseeing, either in the capital, or in the many parks, churches and archaeological sites. Or cook a meal and eat al fresco, after a day of sailing, kayaking and swimming at one of the nearby lakes.

Inaugurated in the summer of 2009, The Brook Cottage boasts a large living area with working fireplace (plenty of wood in the wood pile next to the patio!), ample seating for five with two comfortable couches, dining table and chairs and galley kitchen. The master bedroom has a queen bed, antique armoire and dresser and an en-suite tiled bathroom. The second bedroom has two antique, walnut twin beds that may be joined for an extra-large queen, an antique dresser, night table and armoire. There is also a roll-away bed for an extra person.
New for 2010! The Brook Cottage now has a television for viewing films with DVD player and disc library. Wi-fi internet access available poolside. Bring your laptops!
Further details outdoors:
The Brook Cottage is located at the end of the property. There is a parking area at the top of a chestnut staircase that leads you past an Etruscan grotto, then a stone path winds between fruit trees until you reach the patio. It is a real respite for those in search of privacy, peace and rest. Its spacious wooden interiors and field gardens also make it an ideal place for families with smaller children.
The local stone patio has a charcoal grill, table and chairs for five for dining and additional outdoor furniture for relaxing.
The house takes its name from the ancient spring that originates in the one-time Etruscan settlement, now Cesano Borgo, in the tufa bed some 20 feet below it. While the precipice is carefully fenced off, there is a unique cliff-top view. The stream that borders our back yard is home to Etruscan grottos; we also have a small one within our property, next to the stairs that lead to The Brook Cottage. The oak canopy over the house’s terracotta-tiled roof along with the ferns and chestnut and hazelnut trees that grow in the valley surround the house in pastoral tranquillity.
Our extensive front lawn (2 acres!) is great for games: croquet, badminton and volleyball can all be found here. We also have table tennis and various toys. The Brook Cottage also has its own private grassy field. Or take a nature walk on our land and explore the hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as the great variety of birds.

The Lazio region

Lazio is a region rich with cultural activities, ancient history, gorgeous nature and wonderful food. Il Sogno is perfectly positioned so you can make the most of your vacation with the least travel time to Rome's historical centre (30 minutes by train, the stop is five minutes away), the volcanic lakes, ruins such as Ostia Antica, Hadrian's Villa, Villa D'Este, Roman catacombs and Etruscan necropoli, quaint medieval towns and ancient settlements.
Il Sogno is a five-minute drive from the old “borgo” of Cesano, a medieval town, originally settled by the Etruscans. There are other medieval towns with castles, such as Bracciano and Isola Farnese, within a short drive as well as the beautiful “borgos” of Campagnano, Anguillara, Calcata and the city of Viterbo, located within its ancient walls.
The area is full of Etruscan ruins (Cerveteri, Veio), and boasts hot springs such as Stimigliano and Le Terre dei Papi, all within a 10-30 minute drive. The world-renowned Olgiata golf course is 4 km away, the Parco di Roma Golf Club is 25 minutes drive, and both the Parco dei Medici Golf Club in Rome and the Golf Club le Querce in Sutri are 35 minutes away. We are also just 30 minutes away from Rome's most famous beach.
That being said, many of our guests have a hard time tearing themselves away from our private paradise. It is nice to have the option of just staying home, reading a book from our library by the pool, playing croquet on a manicured lawn, picking your fruits and vegetables from our gardens and then grilling on your private terrace and watching the sun set over the Roman countryside while you enjoy what may well be your best vacation ever.
The Rome / Cesano area
Il Sogno is in the heart of Etruria and borders on Veio Park, the Sorbo Valley and Martignano-Bracciano Park. While located within Rome city limits and close to shopping, trains, and other city amenities, Il Sogno has a tranquil countryside setting.
We border on Rome's Lake District, which is surrounded by unspoiled park land where golf, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, nature walks and birding are year-round activities. In the crystal-clear waters of Bracciano and Martignano, only electric motors are allowed, and both places abound with sailboats, kayaks, peddle boats for rent. Il Sogno's own kayak is on a beach at Lake Bracciano for guest use.
The other volcanic lakes, Vico and Bolsena, are worth a visit as well, and make a nice day trip, especially if you stop along the way at the small town festivals, antique shops and Etruscan ruins.
We are happy to share our favourite hikes, hidden roads to Etruscan and Roman ruins and programs for what we think is an ideal day in an idyllic setting. We can even provide you with a picnic lunch with fruit and vegetables from our garden, cheese from the nearby farm and local wines!

For those of you who want to have your cake and eat it - in terms of a relaxing location but within easy reach of all that Rome and its environs have to offer, then Brook Cottage leaves no box unticked. Ideal for a family of four, or maybe two couples, the cottage located in a quite idyllic property, gives the sense of rurality and peacefulness despite being just a short train journey away from the ancient (and modern) city of Rome. Imagine a day exploring the Colosseum, having your picture taken sitting on the Spanish Steps, a lunch in the Piazza Navona then unwinding in the pool back at Brook Cottage before an exquisite evening meal in one of the local restaurants recommended by your unceasingly patient hosts - Sheryle and Adriano. That's was our experience for two weeks in July last year. To the north of the cottage are volcanic lakes fringed with beaches where we spent the day swimming, kayaking or simply cooling off in the water; then retreating for an early evening meal in the restaurant of the adjacent agritourismo overlooking the lake. Fresh produce wonderfully cooked, a local bottle of wine and the sun going down over the lake to boot! A short drive from the cottage and you're at the train station (parking free) where a 1euro ticket sees you into Rome in 25 minutes. After that it's up to you. We made several journeys like this balanced with relaxing days at the beach or simply lazing by the pool at our new found home. Nightly barbeques gave a sense of the rustic charm of the cottage - being away from it all but having all the comforts of home which the cottage afforded. As for our hosts - Sheryle and Adriano, and of course their daughter Lillian - it's impossible to overstate their willingness to offer assistance that made our holiday as stress-free as possible. Booking tickets and restaurants, providing directions and offering a phone to use for those occasions when we were really stuck proved invaluable and just made our stay that more memorable. A great location, super accommodation, fantastic hosts. What more is there to say except, if you're going to visit Rome but also want the luxury of a rural retreat then try Brook Cottage - you won't be disappointed. |

We were initially attracted to Il Sogno by the photos on the website. They do not do the place full justice. From the warmth of the reception to the location of Brook Cottage, to the wonderful pool, our whole holiday was superb. With the sights of Rome in easy reach, as well as the beautiful lakes just the North ( and not forgetting Sheryl's great insider knowledge of the area) the only problem we had was persuading our daughters to leave the pool and gardens! |
