Vigna Licia is only 18 Km from the centre of Rome and 9 Km from the ring road called the GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare). The house is surrounded by a luxuriant garden full of palms, pines, Lebanese Cedars and olive trees. The property is in the heart of the Decima Malafede protected area, the largest protected natural reserve in Europe set in an urban landscape.

This cosy holiday apartment is situated in our country house, in the heart of the Nature Reserve 'Decima-Malafede'. It is surrounded by pines, olive trees and fields. The property is 5 hectares and located quite near EUR, a Rome's south neighbourhood, just outside the gates of Rome. The location is perfect for a relaxing Roman holiday, combining peaceful, rural surroundings with ease of access to Rome: Vigna Licia is easily connected to Rome's Underground by a bus line with a bus stop situated near to the entrance of the house. Also the airports, the Castelli Romani and the Mediterranean coast are within a few miles (All fifteen minutes by car).

The Lazio region

There is much, much more to Lazio than just Rome! Do you like the mountains, the beach, Renaissance papal villas, wineries, Etruscan ruins, health spas or secluded Franciscan hermitages? Then schedule a few more days in this region, because it has everything you've been looking for. Start with a day in the Castelli Romani, right on Rome's doorstep - we'll tell you how you can absorb 2000 years of history without staying in the city.

Just south of there, on the way to Naples, is the world-class spa town of Fiuggi, surrounded by a host of picturesque hill towns like the one featured in the movie For Rosanne. Or head east to Rieti, you can visit the tiny monasteries where St. Francis made the first crib for Christmas time. You can even sleep in a couple of them, if you like, or try some skiing in the beautiful mountains that loom overhead.

The sea is also not far from Vigna Licia, with the beautiful beaches of Torvaianica and Pratica di Mare, only about 15 Km away. The Roman castles in the villages of Rocca di Papa, Grottaferrata, Albano and Ariccia, the spectacular summer residence of the Pope and some fabulous lakes are only 15 Km away.

Rome / Roma EUR area

There's no escaping it: Rome means history. There's layers of the stuff - Etruscan tombs, Republican meeting rooms, Imperial temples, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque basilicas. In this city a phenomenal concentration of history, legend and monuments coexists with an equally phenomenal concentration of people busily going about their everyday life. It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about the eternal city - the arrogant opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum, the top speed of a Ferrari or the bill for your cappuccino...
Few tourists get as far as EUR, but if you're spending more than a few days in Rome, or are interested in architecture, it's worth spending a few hours visiting the museums and marvelling at Mussolini's new imperial dreams. Don't forget your camera, as EUR is full of unusual photo-opportunities. This new suburb was intended for a Universal Exhibition celebrating Fascist Italy - planned in the 1930s and scheduled for 1942 but abandoned upon the outset of war. Only some of the the plans - by architect Piacentini - had been finished, and after the war work continued in a modernist style but without the same political agenda. The Esposizione Universale Romana is known by its acronym EUR (pronounced as one word: Ay-oor), and is now dominated by offices and wide boulevards. The most dramatic building is the 'square Colosseum', the Palazzo della Civiltà di Lavoro, a tall and striking homage to the achievements of the Italian race On the other side of the busy Via Cristoforo Colombo (Rome's route to the seaside) is another classical-inspired area lined with square colonnades. Here you'll find an impressive selection of museums. The most interesting exhibit you'll see here is the large model of Imperial Rome in the Museo della Civiltà Romana. Downhill from the museums, and the other side of the Metro and bus stops, is an artificial lake, surrounded by a well-tended park where you can wander or enjoy a picnic. The flying-saucer building on the far side is the Palazzo dello Sport, now used for concerts and major events.

There are blue buses which run around the area, but you can easily explore the main streets and buildings on foot. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to cater for the office-workers who inhabit the imposing buildings. The main shopping street is Viale Europa, leading up to the imposing basilica.

How to get there

Local buses run regularly between the property and the underground station "EUR Fermi" in Rome EUR.

Taxi service available, under request, from and to the airports Ciampino and Fiumicino.

Ciampino is at about 20 minutes by car and Fiumicino 30 minutes from the property.

Guestbook for Vigna Licia

"We had a really lovely time staying at Vigna Licia and would definitely stay here again. The apartment is on the top floor of the large villa, benefiting from two large balconies. It is very clean, well furnished and equipped. It is
very helpful to have use of the washing machine, dishwasher etc. The grounds are lovely, and immaculately kept, overlooking lovely countryside. There is plenty of comfortable garden furniture. The pool is a real bonus and we enjoyed daily swims after sightseeing in Rome and the surrounding area. We hired a car and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area. Thoughtful touches such as the welcome bottle of wine and home-made Limoncello were much appreciated! Thank you."
Stephanie S. UK

Hello, I am just mailing to thank you for your hospitality during our visit to Rome last week. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay and feel like we need another holiday to get over that one as we did so much touring we are all exhausted! Your holiday home was very welcoming and the services you provided ie the taxi service and the purchasing of the bus tickets made our arrival and travelling throughout the city much easier.
Thanks again
