The Lazio region
From Wikipedia "Latium was a region of ancient Italy, home to the original Latin people. Its area constituted a part of the much larger modern Italian Region of Lazio, also called Latium in Latin, and occasionally in modern English. The ancient language of the region was to become the basis of Latin.
Latium has played an important role in history owing to its status as the cradle of the Roman Empire and the city of Rome. Consequently, it is home to celebrated works of art and architecture."
The Rome / Central Rome area
The apartment is an elegant residential area (Prati), filled with nice bars and restaurants, but it is also a business area and offers some very important turistic landmark such as the Vatican and St. Peter's. Laying aside the historic centre of Rome it is an ideal position for visiting the rich and chaotic centre yet giving the chance of savoiring the real local style of life, eating at local restaurants, taking a glance at everyday roman activities such as shopping at the public street food market etc. , just strolling along favourite commercial areas.
The proximity to the centre allows anybody to reach it on foot with a nice walk, but for the lazy ones there is the Underground and several bus lines that will easily and quickly take you anywhere you'd like to be.
The Vatican Museums are indisputably one of the finest collections of art in the world. Over the centuries, Papal patrons have commissioned renowned works such as the magnificent frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, and those by Raphael in his stanze. The museums also host some of the most important sculptures from the ancient world. You will have the opportunity to see these works as they were originally viewed and contemplated by the Popes who created the Museums. A chance to have this astounding collection to yourself just a few steps away from home.
The area offers a view of a everyday Rome filled with real Romans doing life. The popular shopping strip of Via Cola di Rienzo offers good amenties as well as an alternative to the high end fare found in say the via Condotti zone. The daily market at Piazza dell'Unita is charming and the prices are very good. A visit must be payed to Castroni with its wide range of local and international foodstuffs. There are quite a lot of groceries and supermarkets. In the area you can find restaurants of any kind and price. Our prefered grocery is Una Gastonomia - La Tradizione - (Via Cipro 8)a much lauded cheese/meat place. The men who run it are incredibly nice and so enthusiastic about the food! Next door their is a wonderful bakery - La Bonta Del Pane, and across the way closer, there is a take-away pizza place - amazing - Pizzarium (Via della Meloria 43) . Even just a taste of their pizza bianca is worth the trip. We are particularly fond of Gabriele and his "Pizzarium" . By the way we are not the only one who like Gabriele and his product as the great Ferran Adria' does the same.
