The Lazio region

Lazio is in central Italy, on the western coast. The region was formerly known to English travellers by its Roman name, Latium, although this version of the name is now rarely used. A major port of call on the Grand Tour, when eighteenth-century travellers explored its scenic villages, Lazio is now largely overlooked in favour of its capital, Rome.

In the heart of Italy and along the Thyrrhenian Sea, Lazio is the centre of the Italian political life thanks to the presence of the government and Parliament; it is the Catholic world centre since there is the Vatican, and a favourite destination of tourism for the innumerable monuments of the Roman civilization and, along the Northern Tuscan border, of the Etruscan civilization. Apart from the area of Rome, the rest of the territory is mostly plain and hills, with mountains in the area of Rieti such as Monte Terminillo (2213 m), and in the north an area of lower mountains of volcanic origins, in whose craters many beautiful lakes took origin (Bracciano lake, Bolsena & Vico lakes).
More than half of the population of the whole region live in or around Rome.

Major sites to visit not far from Rome (max. 1hour):

- Tivoli: Villa d'Este e Villa Adriana
- Ostia Antica: ancient port of Rome
- Lake district: Bracciano & Martignano

Guestbook for La Violetta

We spent a whole week in Rome, during which Alessandra's apartment was a real oasis. Spotless, trendy and totally equipped, it was fresh when the sun poured otuside, warm at nights, peaceful (even during the Champions League final!) and cozy. The apartment is just as it looks in the pictures, it has a very convenient location, plus Alessandra is a wonderful host and provided us with a gift basket, maps of the city, and excellent recommendations for eating and shopping. We would no doubt recommend this place to friends and family, and whenever we go back to Rome, we won't even bother to search for accommodation, we already have the perfect spot!

Marianela & family from Mexico
